Filed May 11, 1965, Ser. No. 549,376 9 Claims. (Ci. 49-407) This invention relates to a stop and fastening device for window installations of the type having a wood window frame, an opposingly arranged pair of weather strip members, and slidably mounted window sashes.
The typical wood window frame is rectangular and includes oppositely arranged, vertically extending side jarnb members and a horizontal head jamb member fixedly bridged across the upper end of the side jamib members. Each side jamb member is provided with a vertically and longitudinally extending groove. In certain window installations along narrow wooden parting bead or strip is fitted in the groove and serves as a guide means between the upper and lower Window sashes. In other window installations, a pair of weather strip members, or a pair of weather strip 'and sash balance assemblies are used to operatively secure the window sashes. In most prior window install-ations using weather strip or weather strip sash balance assemblies, the grooves in the side jamb members of the window frame were not used and the weather strip member or weather strip sash bal-ance assemblies were xedly secured to a respective jamb member by stapling, nailing or the like. The typical wood window frame therefore serves as a combination frame which can optionally be used in the cheaper window installation employing la wood parting strip or in a more expensive installation employing weather strip members or weather strip andsash balance assemblies.
The present invention concerns the window installation employing weather strip members or Weather strip and sash balance assemblies. For the sake of clarity, in this specification, the invention will be described as being in a wind-ow installation employing weather strip members; it is apparent, however, that the invention is equally applicable in an installation including weather strip and sash balance assemblies.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a combined device to be used in a window installation of the heretofore-mentioned type which functions as a stop to prevent the inner or lower sash from going all the way to the top in the raising thereof so that the lock on the top thereof will not hit or damage the head jamb of the window, and which device functions as an installation fastener that eliminates nailing or other means of fastening the weather strip member to the window frame side jamb.
A further object is to provide such a device which comprises first and second members that are interlocked and which are adapted to be used in conjunction with the window installation so that both members are held in place on the upper edge of the weather strip member.
A further object is to provide such -a device which permits ease of assembly of the window installation, and with the use of which no fasteners are required for assembly.
A further object is to provide such a device in which the members are uniquely combined so that a simpler construction is obtained by combining two functions in one device, and thus reducing the Cost thereof.
A further object is to provide such a device that provides a neater `appearin g window installation.
A further object is to provide such a device which is slidably mounted on the upper edge of the Weather strip member so that when the window sash contacts the device, it pushes same upwardly to cover the upper portion o-f the groove in the side jamb, which upper portion was left uncovered by the weather strip member not extending all the way to the head jamb.
A further object is to provide such a device which keeps the weather strip members in line with the head parting bead so that the sash running in the weather strip member will be properly aligned and will not hit the head parting bead.
A further object is to provide a more efficient and secure way of attaching weather strip members to wooden jamb members.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects of the present invention are accomplished and the manner of their accomplishment Will be readily understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the principal embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 5, the window installation is indicated by numeral 11 in FIG. 1 and includes upper and lower window sashes slidably secured respectively in opposingly arranged weather strip members 17, 19. A substantially rectangular Window frame 21 having right and left side jamb members 23, 2S and a head jamb member 27, frames the window sashes and with weather strip members 17, 19 respectively arranged alongside jamb members 23, 25.
Since the right and left components of window installation 11 are substantially alike, the inventive structure will be described in conjunction with the left side components, it being apparent that the right side components of the window installation are similarly arranged.
FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5 illustrate the device 29 of the present invention in conjunction with the window yframe side jamb and head jamb members 25, 27 respectively; weather strip member 19; and upper and lower sash members 13, 15.
l/Veather strip member 19 is offset inwardly away from jamb member 25 to provide the usual parting bead 31 longitudinally iantlmedially of the weather strip member which separates the sashes 13, 15 along the side edges thereof. On the back side of parting bead 31, that is, the side of the weather strip member 19 towards jamb member 25', the spaced apart side wall surfaces 33, 35 and end wall surface 37 define la longitudinally and vertically extending groove 39. Similarly, spaced apart side wall surfaces 41, d3 and end wall surface 45 of jamb member 2S define ka vertically and longitudinally extending groove 47. ln the assembled relationship of weather strip member 19 and window frame 21, grooves 39 and 47 are confrontingly arranged and dene a vertically extending enclosed area 49. lt is in this enclosed area 49 that one of the members, namely a first member 51, of device 29 fits to fasten weather strip member 19 to jamb member 25 as will be better understood in the description to follow.
First member `51 is preferably integrally formed of a suitable material, as 'for example, a substantially rigid plastic. First .member 51 is preferably elongated vertically and preferably of substantially uniform cross-sectional shape adapted to be extruded. First member 51 includes a first portion or protrusion 53 which is substantially square in cross-sectional shape and includes spaced apartside portions 55, 57 integrally interconnected by spaced apart end portion 59 and base portion 61. A plurality of barb members 63 are provided on side portions 55, 57 and extend outwardly therefrom for engagement with side wall surfaces 41, 43, when first member 51 is in place, as best seen in FIG. 3. It will also be seen that when the first member 51 is in place, end portion 59 abuts end surface 45 and the first protrusion 53 extends into the groove 47. First member 51 additionally includes a second portion `or protrusion 65 that is fixedly preferably integrally attached to first protrusion 53 and extends in the opposite direction therefrom into groove 39. Second protrusion 65 is substantially channehshaped and includes a pair of spaced apart side portions 67, 69 and an end web portion 71 interconnecting the side portions 67, 69. The edges of side portions 67, 69 opposite `from end web portion 71 are integrally attached to base portion 61 and extend perpendicularly relative thereto. Side portions 67, 69 are preferably spaced closer together than side portions S, 5'7 so that shoulders 73, 75 are established on first member 51 that are adapted to respectively enga-ge the rounded corners 77, 79 of weather strip member 19. A pair of ribs 81 are preferably provided on end web portion 71 to engage end wall surface 37 and to strengthen second protrusion 65.
lDevice 29 additionally includes a second member S3 which cooperates with first member 51 in a manner that will be more apparent in the description to follow. Second member 83 comprises a substantially rigid stop member 85 that is elongated vertically. Stop member 85 preferably is rectangular in shape and includes a pair of spaced apart vertical side panels 37, 89 integrally interconnected adjacent the upper and lower ends thereof respectively by end members 91, 93. The lower face of end member 93 defines a bottom surface 95 of the stop member 85 and the upper surface of end member 93 defines a top surface 97 of the stop member.
Second member 83 additionally comprises an arm 99 which is preferably integrally formed with stop member 85. Arm 99 includes a connecting portion 101 that eX- tends horizontally outwardly from side panel 89 and interconnects the stop member with a depending portion 103 of arm 99 which is spaced from side panel 89. Depending portion 103 depends downwardly and inwardly towards side panel 89 and terminna-tes in a lower end 105 adjacent end member 93. A hook 107 is provided on arm 99 adjacent lower end 105. Hook 107 is sloped as at 109 upwardly and inwardly towards side panel 89. Also, hook 107 is provided with a horizontally extending ledge 111.
ln assembling first and second members 51, 83, the members are held with the upper edge of side portion 67 adjacent hook 107 with the first and second members being right angularly arranged in the manner shown in FIG. 5. The first and second members 51, 83 are then moved towards one another whereupon side portion 67 acting against sloped surface 109 will cause a spreading apart of arm 99 and side panel 89. A continuation of the abovementioned movement will cause the side portion 67 to be disposed between side panel S9 and depending portion 103 with the upper edge of side portion 67 being contiguous or seated against'connecting portion 101. Also, just before side portion 67 is seated against connecting portion 101, ledge 111 will pass beyond the lower edge of side portion 67 whereupon hook 107 will hook the lower edge of side portion 67 and interlock the first and second members 51, 83 together, as best seen in FIG. 4. lt will be noted that although the material of second member 33 should be substantially rigid, nevertheless there should be enough resiliency of the material to allow the arm 99 to spring away from side panel 39 and thence into the above-mentioned interlocked positionparting bead 31 by pushing the device vdownwardly von the wall 113 to cause the wall to spread arm 99 further away from side panel 89 and to receive the wall between the side panel and side portion 67, as best seen in FIG. 4. With the device 29 in place asabovedescribed, it will be seen that connecting portion 101 extends across theV upper edge of wall 113 .and limits downward movement Y of the device Z9. Also, it will be seen that stop member 35 is supported adjacent weather strip member 19 in the path of upward travel of lower sash 15 so that the stop n member limits upward movement of the lower sash to prevent the lock 115 on the lower sash from hittingy yand damaging head jamb member 27. This upper stop position of lower sash 15 is shown in broken lines in FIGS. 2 and 4. It will be understood that device 29 is slidable vertically on wall 113 so that if the device 29 is spaced from the head jamb member 27 duc to the spade between the upper edge of the weather strip member 19 and head jamb member 27, the device 29 will be move upwardly by the engagement of lower sash member 1 therewith until the top surface 97 of stop member contacts the head jamb member. It will be understood that the device 29 when moved upwardly as above described closes the gap caused by groove 47 which otherwise would be seen above weather strip member 19. This makes a neater appearing window installation 11.
In installing devices 29 in window installation 11, both upper and lower sashes 13, 15 are moved respectively to fully lowered positions. The upper' portions of weather strip members 17, 19 are respectively sprung outwardly away from jamb members 23, 25 and the devices 29 are inserted on top of the weather strip members 17, 19 iti the manner heretofore described. The weather strip niem= bers 17, 19 are then moved outwardly against the jamb members 23, 25, and until the first protrusions of the de; vices 29 enter the grooves in the jamb members, whereupon the weather strip members are keyed to the jamb members to prevent lateral movement of the weather strip members relative to the jamb members, that is, to prevent movement to the right or left 'as viewed in FGa 3; After the devices 29 are put in place, then the Wooden parting bead 116 is secured in place in the groove 117 al= ready provided in head jamb member 27. Since the grooves 117 and 47 have already been made in alignment with one another during the manufacture of window frame 21, the devices 29 insure that the p-arting beads 31 of the weather strip members are in correct alignment with the wooden parting bead 116; thus, the sashes 13, 15 will be correctly aligned with the wooden parting bead and there will be no damage that would otherwise occur and the window may be completely closed.
From the foregoing description7 it will be seen that very eiiicient devices 29 are provided which are each one unit yet each provides a dual function of stopping the lower sash in its upward travel and functions as an installation fastener that eliminates nailing or other means of fastening the weather strip members to the window jambs.
Referring now to the modified embodiment shown in FIG. 6 and indicated as at 119, the principal difference between device 119 and device 29 is in the first members of the respective devices. Thus, first member 121 of device 119 is provided with a first flap member 123 on one side of the first portion or protrusion 125 and a second ap member' 127 on the opposite side of the second portion and Y bead 31 so thlat'device 29k or protrusion 129. Also, a projection 131 is provided on weather strip member 133 extending into the groove 135 of the weather strip member in position to be engaged by the distal end of flap members 127. Flap members 123, 127 extend along the vertical length of first member 121, are preferably integrally attached at opposite directions. Flap members 123, 127 are formed so that the inherent resiliency of the material of which first member 121 is made cause the flap members to be urged outwardly away from the main body portion of the first member so that the end 137 of flap member 123 engages jamb member 25 to hold protrusion 125 in groove 47 and end 139 of fap member 127 engages projection 131 to hold protrusion 129 in groove 135. It will be understood that when protrusion 129 is inserted in groove 13S flap member 127 will be depressed in going past projection 131 and will, when the end 139 goes past the projection, spring outwardly to lock the iiap member behind the projection.
Although the invention has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity or understanding, it is to be understood that it is not to be so limited since change and modifications may be made therein which are within the full intended scope of this invention as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
1. In a double sash window installation of the type including a wooden window frame including a vertically extending side jamb member having vertically extending end and side wall surfaces defining a longitudinal groove and including a horizontal head jamb member joined with said vertical side jamb member and with said window including a weather strip member having end and side wall surfaces defining a longitudinal groove, and further with the arrangement of the respective members being such that said side jamb groove and said weather strip groove are confrontingly matched and dene a vertically extending enclosed area substantially terminated adjacent the upper end by said head jamb member, and window sashes slidable relative to said weather strip member; a stop and fastening device comprising, in combination, first and second members; said first member being removably received in said enclosed area with a rst portion thereof extending into said longitudinal groove of said side jamb member and a second portion thereof extending into said longitudinal groove of said weather strip member to lock said weather strip member against lateral movement; said second member being a substantially rigid stop member having a bottom surface and a top surface spaced from said bottom surface, interlocking means connecting said stop member to said first member and being supported by said weather strip member for holding said first member in place in said enclosed area and for supporting said stop adjacent said weather strip member in position for said bottom surface of said stop to be engaged by one of said window sashes and said top surface of said stop member to be engaged by said head jamb member.
2. The structure of claim 1 in which said first member includes a first protrusion, and a second protrusion fixedly attached to said first protrusion and extending in the opposite direction from said first protrusion, said first protrusion extending into said longitudinal groove of said side jamb member and said second protrusion extending into said longitudinal groove of said weather strip member.
3. The structure of claim 2 in which is included a plurality of barb means on said first protrusion for engaging and gripping said side wall surfaces of said side iamb member.
4. The structure of `claim 2 in which said second protrusion is substantially channel-shaped and includes a pair of spaced apart side portions and an end web portion interconnecting said side portions; and in which said interlocking means comprises an arm including a connecting portion interconnecting said arm and said stop member, said arm depending from said connecting portion in spaced relationship with said stop member to its termination in a lower end, a hook attached to said arm adjacent the lower end thereof, said arm extending alongside one of said side portions of said second protrusion with said connecting portion extending over and engaging the upper edge of said Weather strip member and with said hook engaging the lower end of said one of said side portions to lock said second member in place on said first member.
5. The structure of claim 1 in which said first member includes first liap means for engaging said jamb member in said longitudinal groove thereof to hold said first portion thereof in said longitudinal groove of said jamb member, said weather strip member includes a projection extending into said longitudinal groove thereof, and said first member includes second flap means resiliently urged outwardly for engagement behind said projection to hold said second portion of said first member in said longitudinal groove of said weather strip member.

In a double sash window installation of the type including a wooden window frame including a vertically extending side jamb member having vertically extending end and side wall surfaces defining a longitudinal groove and including a horizontal head jamb member joined with said vertical side jamb member and with said Window including a weather strip member having vertically extending end and side wall surfaces defining a longitudinal groove, and further with the arrangement of the respective members being such that said side jamb groove and said weather strip groove are confrontingly matched and define a vertically extending enclosed area substantially terminated adjacent the upper end by said head jamb member, and window sashes slidable relative to said Weatherstrip member; a stop and fastener device comprising, in combination, first and second members; said first member including a first protrusion, a second protrusion fixedly attached to said first protrusion and extending in the opposite direction from said first protrusion, said first member being removably received in said enclosed area with said rst protrusion extending into said longitudinal groove of said side jamb member and with said second protrusion extending into said longitudinal groove of said weather strip member to lock said weather strip member against lateral movement, a plurality of barb means on said first protrusion for engaging and gripping said side wall surfaces of said side jamb member, said second protrusion being substantially channel-shaped and including a pair of spaced apart side portions and an end web portion interconnecting said side portions; said second member including a substantially rigid stop member having a bottom surface and a top surface spaced from said bottom surface, an arm including a connecting portion interconnecting said arm and said stop member, said arm depending from said connecting portion in spaced relationship to said stop member to its termination in a lower end, a hook attached to said arm adjacent the lower end thereof, said arm extending alongside one of said side portions of said second protrusion with said connecting portion extending over and engaging the upper edge of said weatherstrip member and with said hook engaging the lower end of said one of said side portions to lock said second member in place on said first member, said stop member being supported adjacent said weather strip member in position for said bottom surface of said stop to be engaged by one of said window sashes and said top surface of said stop to engage said head jamb member.
7. In a sash window installation having a grooved side jamb, a grooved weather strip member, a head jamb member, and window sashes slidable relative to said weather strip member, a stop and fastening device comprising, in combination, first and second members; said second member including a substantially rigid stop member having a bottom surface and a top surface spaced from said bottom surface, and means connecting said stop member to said first member and for engaging the upper edge of the weather stripV member for holding said first member with portions thereof extending into said grooved side j-amb and said grooved weatherstrip member to lock the two together and for supporting said stop adjacent said Weatherstrip member in position for said bottom surface of said stop to be engaged by one of said Window sashes and said top surface to engage said head jarnb member.
8. The structure of claim 7 in which said first member includes a substantially channel-shaped second protrusion including a pair of spaced apart side portions and an end web portion interconnecting said side portions, and in which said interconnecting means includes an arm including a connecting portion interconnecting said arm and said stop member, said arm depending from said connecting portion in spaced relationship to said stop member to its termination in a lower end, a hook attached to said arm adjacent the lower end thereof, said arm eX- tending alongside one of said side portions of said second protrusion with said connecting portion being adapted to extend over and engage' the upper edge of the Weather strip member and with said hook engaging the lower end of said one of said side portions to lock said second member in place on said rst member.
9. The structure of claim 7 in which said rst member includes iirst and second ap means for respectively engaging the grooved side jamb and the grooved weather strip member to hold said rst member in the grooves of the side jarnb and Weather strip member.

Claims (1)

  1. 7. IN A SASH WINDOW INSTALLATION HAVING A GROOVED SIDE JAMB, A GROOVED WEATHER STRIP MEMBER, A HEAD JAMB MEMBER, AND WINDOW SASHES SLIDABLE RELATIVE TO SAID WEATHER STRIP MEMBER, A STOP AND FASTENING DEVICE COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, FIRST AND SECOND MEMBERS; SAID SECOND MEMBER INCLUDING A SUBSTANTIALLY RIGID STOP MEMBER HAVING A BOTTOM SURFACE AND A TOP SURFACE SPACED FROM SAID BOTTOM SURFACE, AND MEANS CONNECTING SAID STOP MEMBER TO SAID FIRST MEMBER AND FOR ENGAGING SAID STOP EDGE OF THE WEATHER STRIP MEMBER FOR HOLDING SAID FIRST MEMBER WITH PORTIONS THEREOF EXTENDING INTO SAID GROOVED SIDE JAMB AND SAID GROOVED WEATHERSTRIP MEMBER TO LOCK THE TWO TOGETHER AND FOR SUPPORTING SAID STOP ADJACENT SAID WEATHERSTRIP MEMBER IN POSITION FOR SAID BOTTOM SURFACE OF SAID STOP TO BE ENGAGED BY ONE OF SAID WINDOW SASHES AND SAID TOP SURFACE TO ENGAGE SAID HEAD JAMB MEMBER.
