UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. LOXV, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
PROCESS OF MAKING TILES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,241, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed October 20, 1885. Serial No. 180,418. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Low, of Chelsea, in the county ofSuffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Process of Making Tiles, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart ofthis specification, in ex plaining its nature.
The invention relates to a process for making tiles having one or more perforations or holes extending through them.
In practicing my invention I use two dies, plates, or diaphragms, between which the tile dust or material is compressed, and one or more plugs, posts, or formers for making the holes or perforations which extend across the dieforming cavity or space through holes formed in the dies or platesand I then fill the (lie with the tile dust or material, and compress and solidify it to shape between these surfaces and about the plug orplugs. The plug orplugsis or are then moved in relation to the plates or dies, or the plates removed from the plug or plugs, and the formed tile is then removed from the dies and burned and finished in the ordinary way.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the tilemaking machine in vertical section, the parts being shown in the act of makingatile. Fig. 2 shows the die-plates elevated; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the tile.
I have shown for practicing this process the tile-making machine described in my application for Letters Patent of even date.
A represents one die or plate; B, the other die or plate; 0, the diespace, and E a post or plug for forming the hole in the tile, which extends through holes formed in the dies or plates.
The dies or plates are vertically movable in the die box by means of a movable rod orsupport, so that the tile may be moved from the post-,forming the hole before it is stripped from the dies. After the plug has been removed from the die-cavity the tile is stripped from the die. By this process it will be seen that the tile dust or material is shaped and solidified under pressure between two plates and about a former or post,so that a well defined hole is produced in the act of reducing the tile dust or material to shape. and that after the tile is so shaped it is not removed from the dies until the former or post has been withdrawn from the die-cavity, and therefore offers no resistance to the stripping of the tile from the die.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The process of making perforated tiles or tiles having one or more holes extending through them, consisting in arranging one or more posts, plugs, or formers to extend across the die-cavity, compressing the tile-dust or tile-making material between the die-plates and about said post or posts, and then removing the post or posts from the die-cavity before the tile is stripped from the die, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The step in the process of manufacturing perforated tiles or tiles having holes extending completely through them, consisting in arranging one or more posts, p ugs, or fornr ers to extend across the die-cavity into holes in the dies, and then compressing or solidifying the tile-forming material in said cavity about said post or posts, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
JOHN G. LOW.
