To all 1071 cm it may concern Be it known that I, VVAL'rI-IER BtirinnN, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing in the town of Iserlohn, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented new and useful improvements in methods of producing the ears in needles having bulges at both sides of a groove previously produced by stamping, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved method of producing the ears in needles made of steel wire and having grooves of a form illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 in the accompanying drawings, which grooves are previously stamped in. Through stamping the groove 0 some of the material has suffered a displacement with the result that at both sides of the groove 0 bulges b have been produced. Since the diameter of the grooved portion of the finished needle must not exceed the diameter of the cylindrical needle shaft, these bulges are to be removed. However, while removing the bulges no detrimental deformation of the groove must ensue. Prior to the production of the ear the oval shaped groove 0 is stamped in to a certain depth where a flat bottom cl is formed. From the bottom cl the side walls of the groove do not rise vertically but incline outwardly; thus, the groove increases gradually in its section from the bottom (Z upward till level with the top surface of the shaft; see Figs. 1 and 2. The circumference of the groove bottom corresponds to the size of the ear to be punched through it in ac cordance with this new method.
An object of the present invention is to provide a method whereby the punching of needle shafts thus bulged is made possible.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a method whereby the bulges of the needle shaft are removed before the ear is produced by way of punching, and whereby the punching is prevented from causing any detrimental deformation of the groove.
The novel method consists in placing the grooved portion of the needle shaft with its sides bulged into compressing means for the purpose of pressing back the bulges and holding the grooved portion of the needle shaft fixedly in compressed condition till the ear is punched. of the needle shaft is entirely inclosed by the compressing means while the punch penetrates the flat bottom of the groove, there is no possibility of any lateral displacement of material and, hence, no deformation of the groove can occur.
In the accompanying drawings which are intended to serve for explaining the manner in which this method is carried out, Fig. 1 shows a continuous shaft a from which the needles are produced, the shaft being al ready provided with a groove 6 through which the ear is to be punched. Fig. 2is a section after line AB of Fig. 2. Figs. 3, 3*, 3 and 4 illustrate one constructive form of the compressing and clamping means, while Fig. 5 reproduces a punch for producing the ear. Fig. 6 shows the form the grooved portion of the shaft a assumes on first bringing the compressing means into position for punching. Fig. 7 is a section through the punched groove after line C-D of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 shows a finished needle head with punched groove.
The compressing means preferably comprise two press checks 9 and h which are provided, on their contacting faces, with horizontal recesses i forming a continuous cylindrical opening, and, similarly, with vertical recesses 70, [a crossing the first ones. Into the horizontal opening the grooved portion of the needle shaft is placed, while through the vertical opening 7c, 0 the punch is passed that produces the ear within the groove cl. The recesses 76 and 70 form funnel-shaped openingstheir smallest sections coinciding with the horizontal opening for the needle shaftlarge enough for the punch m to be passed through without the latter touching their walls. Thus, the punch m, without being guided within the vertical openings, is forced through the bottom (Z of the groove 0 and severs an oval piece of material that drops through the lower-opening 70 On approaching the cheeks g and it over the inserted needle shaft until their faces contact, the bulges at both sides of the groove are pressed inwardly whereby no deformation of the groove is caused, the latter merely becoming slightly smaller in its upper part.
During the punching operation pressure is applied to both press cheeks g, It, so that ing the ears in needles having bulges atv both sides of a groove previouslyproduced by stamping, which method consists in placing the bulged portion of the needle shaft between compressing means, comprising two opposed parts with horizontal recesses which, if both parts are moved far enough toward each other, form a cylindrical opening of the size of the needle shaft, and suloecting the bulged portion of needle shaft to compressing force by applyingsaid compressing means, and thereupon passing a punch of known construction through vertical recesses provided in said parts of the compressing means and crossing the recesses first-named, for the purpose of producing the ear within the groove, and applying, during the punchlng operation, pressure'to the parts-forming the compressing means, substantially as set forth.
