COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,188, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed April 28, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SaNroRD K. WEY MOUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardiner, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification, refer- My invention relates to an improvement in combination-locks; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my improved lock, with the outer side of the inclosing-case removed, so as to disclose the interior mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar view ofthe same in another position. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the bolt with'- drawn. Fig. 4 is a detailed view.- Fig. 5 is an elevation of the lock, showing the works in a certain position. Fig. 6 is an elevation of a moditied form of my invention.
A represents an inclosing-case, and B represents the bolt, which slides between guideways C and a stud, D. This bolt has a slot, I), near its rear end, which opens on one side, and in this slot fits one end of a bellerank lever, E, which is fulcrumed to the case at e and has its sh ort end fitted into an open slot, f, which is formed in an endwisc-moving part, F. This part F has a slot, f', in one end, through which slot passes a screw, f2, that secures the part to the case. The opposite end of the part F is reduced, as atf3, and has a notch, f", on one side and a shoulder, f5, projecting from the opposite side.
A part, G, is secured to the inclosing-case by a screw, g, that passes through a slot, g', that is madein one of its ends, and is normally nearly in line with the part F, and has a shouldered free end, g2, that enters the notch f* of the part F. A spring, H, presses the part G on one side, so as to cause said part to bear against the part F. From the center of the part G, on the side opposite to the spring H, extends a projection, g3.
I represents a spindle, that is journaled in the case and in a bracket, z', that is secured in one corner thereof. To this spindle is fixed a cam, K, by means of a set-screw, Z', that passes through a sleeve formed with the cam and Serial No. 163,75l. (Model.)
bears against the spindle I, said cam bearing against the projection gi of the part G, and to the outer end of said spindle is fixed a dial, L, that is divided into fifty degrees around its periphery, and numbered, as shown. A hollow sleeve, M, passes over the spindle I, and has its bearing between the dial L and the cam K. To the outer end of the sleeve is secured a knob, M, which is somewhat larger in diameter than the dial, and is notched, as at m. From the inner end of the sleeve M projects an arm, m2, at right angles to the sleeve, and this arm is connected to the part F by a rod, N. The cam K is shaped as shown, having the at side k, the armc, which has its outer face or edge forming an arc that is drawn from the center of the spindle, a semicircular projection, k2, that extends at about right angles to the arm lc from the side opposite the straight side k, and an arm, It, which extends farther from the spindle than the arm 7a and is in a line therewith. Notches are made in the arms k los and near one end of the straight edge of the cam.
O represents a crescent-shaped pawl that is pivoted at its center to the inclosingvcase, as at o. A spring, l?, bears against this pawl, and keeps one of its ends bearing against the cam K. The pawl O is located on the side of the cam opposite the part G.
R represents a detent that is pivoted to the inclosing-case, as at r. This detent hasa projecting arm, r, that engages with the pawl O, and an arm, r2, projecting at right angles to the arm r', that is caused to bear normally against the shoulderf5 of the part F by the spring S.
T represents a pawl that is located between the arm r of the detent R and the reduced end of the part F. This pawl T is pivoted centrally to the inclosing-case, as at t, one extremity, t', of the pawl extending toward the cam K, and the opposite extremity forming an arm, t2, that is in a line with the extremity t.
The operation of my device is as follows: Supposing the door to which the lock is attached to be locked, to unlock it the dial is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. l far enough to cause the arm k3 of the cam to bear against the projection g3 of part G and move parts G and F the length IOO of slot g in part G and partly withdraw the bolt. A slight reverse movement is then given to the dial. which causes arm 7c3 of cam K to move the part G outwardly sufficiently far to first disengage it from the part F, as shown at Fig. 2, and to also move the part G lengthwise in the reverse direction to its former movement, so that its projection gIl will be ont of line with the vrecessfof part F, and thus prevent part F from locking with part G, as shown at Fig. 5. A third partial rotation is then given to the dial in the direction of the arrow, which causes the arm 7c3 of the cam K to strike against the arm t' of pawl T and cause the arm t* of said pawl to move the free ends of the parts G and F toward the front side of the lock-case a sufficient distance to cause the shoulderf5 ofthe part F to clear the projection r of the detentR and allow the spring Sto move the detent in the position shownin Fig. 3, with its arm r bearing against one end of the pawl O, which pawl thus acts as a stop therefor. rlhe part F is then free to be moved lengthwise, which is done by turning the knob in the direction of the arrow, thus withdrawing the bolt.
The notches lwith which the cam K is provided are scalloped or waved. One arm of the pawl O bears in these notches and is held in contact with the cam K by the bearingspring I) with sufficient force to hold the cam in its various positions when opening the lock,
but does not prevent the cam from being freely turned in either direction by ai'orce sufficient to overcome the resistance of spring Pand release the pawl O from the notches.
In Fig. 6 I illustrate amodiiied form of my invention, in which I dispense with the lever E and connect the end ofthe arm M2 directly to the bolt. Vhen the lock is thus constructed, the bolt moves in the same direction as the parts F G, this form of lock being preferable for some purposes to the other.'
On the outer side of the case of the lock is secured a bracket, Z, through which passes a setscrew, Z, the point ot' which passes through one side of the ease. The free end of the bracket bears on the outer end of the projecting sleeve or shank of the cam K. When it is desired to change the combination, the screw Z is turned so as to cause the free end of the bracket to bear tightly against the end of the shank of the cam and clamp the cam in place, so asto prevent it from turning while the coinbination is being changed. The set-screw Z is then released from spindle I, which enables the spindle to be turned in the sleeve of the cam and change the combination, when the screw Z' is caused to again clamp the cam rigidly tothe spindle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the inclosing-case, the bolt, the lever E, slotted part F, having the reduced end f3, notch ft, and shoulderf,
l the slotted part G, having the shouldered end g2 and the projection g3, the spring bearing against said part, the spindle journaled in the case, the cam secured thereto, and the dial fixed to the outer end of the spindle, the sleeve on the spindle, the knob, and the arm secured to the sleeve at opposite ends thereof, and the rod connecting the arm of the sleeve with the part F. substantially as described.
2. The combination of the inclosing-case, the bolt, the lever E, slotted part F, having the reduced end f3, notch f4, and shoulder f5, the slotted part G, having the shouldered end g2 and the projection g3, the spring bearing against said part, the cam, the spindle journaled in the case to which the cam is secured. the dial fixed to the outer end of the -spindle, the sleeve on the spindle, the knob, and the arm secured tothe sleeve at opposite the sleeve with the part F, the pivoted pawl O, the spring bearing against said pawl, the pivoted detent R, having arms r and r2, said detent engaging withV part F, and a spring bearing against the detent and the pivoted pawl T, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the inclosing-case, the slotted part F, having the reduced endfi, notch f4, and shoulder f5, the slotted part G, having the shouldered end g2 and the projection g3, the spring bearing against said part, the spindle journaled in the case, the cam secured to the spindle, the dial tiXed to the outer end of the spindle, the sleeve on the spindle, the knob, and the arm secured to the sleeve at opposite end thereof, the rod connecting the arm of the sleeve with the part F, and the bolt with which the end of the arm of the sleeve engages, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a lock, of the spindle, the cam, the screw for securing the cam to the spindle, the bracket, and the screw passing through the 'same into the case, for holding the cam While the combination is being changed, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the inclosingcase, the bolt, the lever E, the slotted part- F, the slotted part G, adapted to engage with the part F, the spring bearing against part G, the spindle journaled in the case, the dial xed to the outer end of the spindle, the sleeve on the spindle, the knob, and the arm secured to the sleeve, the rod connecting the arm of the sleeve with the part F, and means for disengaging parts F and G by turning the spindle, whereby the bolt may be then Withdrawn by turning the knob, substantially as described.
