Description

` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN A. THOMPSON, OF OAYUGA, NENV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CAR VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,614, dated October 29, 1861.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. THOMPSON, of Cayuga, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Oar ventilators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and Operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of the same, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of box with deflector closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing del'iector Open as viewed from exterior of car. Fig. 3 is a view of box or outside case with delector removed, showing groove. Fig. 4 is a view of deiector removed from case. Fig. 5 is an interior View of box with deector open. Fig. 6 is a view of section of box with grooved guides.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
In the drawings, A is the langed deiector.
B is the outside box or case; C, grooved guides; D, thumb or button screw fastening, and E pins traversing guides O.
The box B may be made of any desired size, of plate or cast metal or other material, with grooves C sunken in two Opposite sides of same. These grooves may be described with any desired radii from the corners ct a.
The three-sided deflector A is made so as accurately to close the before-described box B by insertion within the same, as shown in Fig. 1. The anges are at their ends cut upon circles Whose radii are the length of inner side ofbox B. Pins E are inserted in the flanges at points which will be found at the intersection of two aros described from points b b with radii. equal to those with which grooves O are described, so that said pins will traverse said grooves.
There is a small strip on the inner side of the box to prevent the water owing into the car. This strip is shown at F.
The box is to be inserted over or between the windows of car sides or ends directly under the roof. Detlectors inserted in the ends of the car should be covered with wiregauze at the ends of detlecting-anges. The thumb-screw D is designed to x the deector at any desired angle, thus admitting and discharging any required amount of air, and by opening the mouths backward eiectually excluding dust and oinders and freely admitting air to inside of car.
I do not claim the detlecting-plane, as such is well known; but.
I claim- As an improvement in railroad-car ventilators, the combination of the box B, grooved as described, with the three-sided deeotor A, the same being applied and operated in the manner above set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. THOMPSON.
