(Cl. 24218) 10 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Device in a textile machine for preventing loop formation of yarn ends of a wound yarn package during a yarnend seeking operation includes a suction nozzle formed with a suction slit opening extending transversely to the peripheral surface of the yarn package, the slit opening being defined by an edge of the nozzle having a pair of opposed elongated edge portions, means for moving the yarn package and the suction nozzle relative to each other so that the suction slit opening passes around the peripheral surface in a direction opposite to the direction of winding of the package with one of the edge portions leading and the other trailing, so that a loop formed at a yarn end can be sucked into the slit opening, and a yarn severing device located at the trailing edge portion for severing the end portion of the loop.
My invention relates to a device for preventing loop formation when catching yarn ends of textile spools by suction.
In textile machines when the yarn ends of spools are caught by means of suction nozzles during rotation of the spools in the yarn-unwinding direction, i.e., the direction opposite to the direction in which the spools have been originally wound as for example with automatic quick traverse winding frames, bottle-shaped or taper bobbin winding machines and, if the occasion arises, Weft winding machines as well as devices for seeking or catch ing the yarn ends on spinning cops, it can sometimes happen that loops in the form of a double yarn are sucked away and conveyed to a location for a subsequent opera= tion, for example to a knotting device. Double yarns of this type, however, disrupt the subsequent operation quite considerably, causing yarn breaks and consequent breakdown of the process or a great waste of yarn material.
These loops which form the double yarns are produced, for example, because the uppermost yarn layers of the spools slacken and become loose and have a tendency to shift toward the center of the spool. If one of these loose yarn layers is caught by the suction current, a loop is thus formed in the suction nozzle and is further increased in size due to the loose yarn sucked after it.
It is accordingly an object of my invention to avoid the disadvantages of the known textile machines which employ suction nozzles, and more particularly to avoid the formation of loops of this type.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, I provide in accordance with my invention, a device for preventing the formation of loops when catching yarn ends by suction applied to textile spools rotatable in the yarn-unwinding direction, which comprises a suction nozzle having a slot opening extending across the peripheral surface of the spool windings for subjecting the peripheral surface to suction, and a yarn severing device, as viewed in the yarn-unwinding direction of the spool, located adjacent the rear or trailing edge of the slot opening of the nozzle.
The concept of the invention in this application is based on the fact that the yarn portion of the loop leading to the Patented Jan. 2, 1968 core of the spool, as viewed in the yarn-unwinding direction, slides on the forward or leading limiting edge of the slot opening in the suction nozzle whereas the portion of the loop leading to the yarn end of the spool slides over the rear or trailing limiting edge of the slot. It is the latter yarn portion which is to be severed in accordance with the invention.
In accordance with one aspect of my invention, the severing device is either fixed at a location between the rear slot limiting edge of the suction nozzle and the spool or is pivotable into this region. The construction of the pivotable severing device is particularly suitable for devices wherein the spool is pivoted into the vicinity of a fixed nozzle for the purpose of seeking the yarn. If the yarn seeking device is constructed in such a way, however, that the spool has a stationary mounting and the suction nozzle moves with respect to the spool, it can thus be advan tageous if the yarn severing device is formed at the rear limiting edge proper of the nozzle slot opening.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a knife much like a razor blade is used as the yarn severing device for carrying out a severing or cutting motion in the sense of a to and fro or back and forth movement or an oscillating or vibrating movement, at least during a portion of the period during which the yarn seeking operation takes place. Furthermore, the yarn severing device can have a similar construction for example, as that of a conventional hair-cutting machine, and it is advantageous for the cutting motions to be carried out therewith solely during the yarn-seeking operation or during part of the time needed for carrying out that operation.
Other features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in the appended claims.
Although the invention is illustrated and described herein as device for preventing loop-formation when catching yarn ends of textile spools by suction, it is nevertheless not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope and range of equivalents of the claims.
The construction and method of operation, however, together with additional objects and advantages thereof will be best understood from the following description of a specific embodiment thereof when read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary side view, partly in section, of an embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is an end view of the suction nozzle according to FIG. 1 and showing a modified yarn severing device;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line III-III of FIG. 2 in the direction of the arrows; and
FIGS. 4 to 8 are end views of the suction nozzle and showing five further modifications of the severing device.
Referring now to the drawing and first to FIG. 1 thereof, there is shown an embodiment of my invention in cross-section through a yarn guiding rum 1 which rotates a yarn package 2 wound on a spool core 3. In order to perform a yarn seeking operation, the drum 1 is rotated in the direction of the arrow 5, i.e., counter-clockwise, whereby the spool 3 or yarn package 2 rotates in the direction of the arrow 6, i.e., clockwise. A suction nozzle 4 is swung into the vicinity of the yarn package and extends across the peripheral surface of the yarn windings of the spool. When a loop 7 is formed during a rotation of the spool in the yarn-unwinding direction, it is apparent that the yarn portion 7' extending to the core or main body of the spool winding slides over the leading limiting edge 4 of the slot of the nozzle, as viewed in the yarn-unwinding direction of the spool, whereas the portion 7" of the loop leading to the yarn end of the spool slides across the trailing limiting edge 4" of the slot in the nozzle. The trailing edge 4" of the slot is provided with a yarn severing device in the form of a cutting blade 8, integral therewith in the illustrated embodiment of FIG. 1, which severs the yarn portion 7" of the loop 7 while the yarn portion 7 leading to the core of the spool is further unwound and then passed from the suction nozzle to a knotting device. A suitable knotting device and appertaining mechanism and structures for carrying out the knotting operation in a multistation automatic coil-winding machine is described and illustrated for example in Patent No. 3,077,311, to S. Fiirst issued Feb. 12, 1963.
As mentioned hereinabove, the yarn severing device 8 can carry out a to and fro, i.e. longitudinal reciprocating, motion or a back and forth, i.e., transverse reciprocating motion, an oscillating or similar motion or can operate like the known hair-cutting machine. Furthermore as aforementioned, it is not absolutely necessary to place the yarn severing device at the tip of the limiting edge 4" of the slot in the nozzle, but rather the yarn severing device can be located also between the surface of the yarn package and the yarn suction nozzle or can be inserted in that region during the yarn seeking operation or only for a portion of the time duringwhich the yarn seeking operation takes place.
Thus, in FIGS, 2 and 3 there is shown an embodiment of my invention which includes a severing device having a cutting edge tool 8 much like a razor blade that is fixed to the winding machine frame 20 by a suitable supporting holder 21 and extends across the peripheral surface of the spool (not shown) between the trailing edge 4" of the nozzle slot and the spool.
In the embodiment of FIG. 4, the severing device blade 8 which is secured at one end of a bell crank lever 22 mounted centrally on a pivot pin 9 fixed to the machine frame, for example, and pivotable about the pin 9 into the space between the trailing edge 4 of the nozzle opening and the spool (not shown).
In the embodiment of FIG. 5, there is shown the manner in which the severing device blade 8' located in front of the nozzle 4, can be reciprocated in the direction of its own longitudinal axis. For this purpose a rotatable crank 16 is provided for reciprocating the blade 8 longitudinally through a connecting rod 11, a joint 12 and a push rod 13.
In FIG. 6 there is shown an embodiment for reciprocating the severing device blade 8' in a direction transverse to its longitudinal axis or, in effect, for applying a vibratory motion thereto. The blade 8 is provided with an armature 14 extending partly into an electromagnet 15. An intermittent excitation of the magnet 15 reciprocatingly displaces the armature 14 and the blade 8 therewith. The compression springs 23 aid in restoring the blade 8' to its furthermost position from the electromagnet coil 15 during the intervals that the coil is not electrically energized.
In FIG. 7 there is shown an embodiment which can produce a swinging or oscillating motion of the severing device blade 8'. Two rotary eccentrics 16 and 16' are accordingly mounted in guides 17 and 17' respectively As the eccentrics 16, 16 rotate in unison, the blade 8' undergoes a swinging or oscillating movement.
According to the embodiment of FIG. 8, the severing device has a construction similar to that of a hair clipper. Two saw blade- like elements 18, 19 are provided, at least one of which executes a reciprocatory motion relative to the other in the direction of their longitudinal axes. Although not shown in FIG. 8, the reciprocatory motion can be eifected by the mechanism provided for that purpose in the embodiment of FIG. 5.
The manner in which the severing devices of FIGS. 4-8 are actuated is completely immaterial with respect to the invention. That is, the various cranks and eccentrics for either oscillating, reciprocating or vibrating the severing elements of FIGS. 4, 5, 7, and 8 maybe operated continuously be electric motor means or intermittently by an electric contact actuated by movement of the nozzle which controls an electric motor means. The electromagnet 15 of FIG. 6 may be intermittently energized throughout the winding operation by any conventional circuit means which would produce an intermittent electrical impulse.
I claim:
1. In a textile machine, a device for preventing loop formation of yarn ends of a wound yarn package during a yarn-end seeking operation, comprising a suction nozzle formed with a suction slit opening extending transversely to the peripheral surface of the yarn package, said slit opening being defined by an edge of said nozzle having a pair of opposed elongated edge portions, means for moving the yarn package and said suction nozzle relative to each other so that said suction slit opening passes around said peripheral surface in a direction opposite to the direc tion of winding of the package with one of said edge portions leading and the other trailing, whereby a loop formed at a yarn end may be sucked into said slit opening, and a yarn severing device located at said trailing edge portion for severing the end portion of the loop.
2. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprises a cutting blade integral with said trailing edge portion of said nozzle.
3. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprises a stationary cutting blade located between said trailing edge portion of said nozzle and the yarn package.
4. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprises a cutting blade, and means for pivoting said blade into and out of a position intermediate said trailing edge portion of said nozzle and the yarn package. 3
5. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprises a cutting blade located between said trailing edge portion of said nozzle and the yarn package and means for reciprocating said blade in the direction of its longitudinal axis.
6. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprises a cutting blade located between said trailing edge portion of said nozzle and the yarn package, and means for reciprocating said blade in a direction transverse to its longitudinal axis.
7. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprising a cutting blade located between said trailing edge portion of said nozzle and the yarn pack: age, and rotary eccentric means operatively connected with said blade for producing oscillatory movement thereof.
8. Device according to claim 1 wherein said yarn severing device comprises a pair of adjacent saw-tooth blades having overlapping teeth, said blades being located between said trailing edge portion of said nozzle and the yarn package, at least one of said blades being reciprocable relative to the other in the direction of their longitudinal axes.
9. Device according to claim 1 wherein said suction nozzle is stationary and the yarn package is rotatable in a direction opposite to the direction of Winding of the yarn package.
