IMPROVED CANTEEN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 33,586, dated October 29, 1861.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HERBERT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Canteen; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specilication,in which- Figure l represents my invention by aperspective view, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.

The object ot' this invention is to produce a canteen which is useful not only for the purpose of carrying water and other liquids, but can be readily and easily converted into an apparatus for boiling and cooking purposes; and the invention consists in making the canteen of such form as to admit of a large opening being made in the top for the purpose of introducing any article to be cooked and for the convenience of cleaning. It also consists in attaching legs to the canteen in such a manner that when supported thereon it can be used for boiling or cooking, or the legs can be folded up and the canteen made so as not to occupy more space than the ordinary canteen and as convenient for carrying about on the person. It further consists in a provision for carrying a cup and Candlestick, hereinafter to be further explained.
To enable others lskilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The inner side A, intended to be worn next to the person, is made of curved form in its horizontal section, and the outside B is made'in the form of an Ogee or circular. A top and bottom are soldered or otherwise attached to the said inner and outer sides, so that when the apertures in the top are closed a perfectly water-tight vessel is produced. A large opening is formed inthe top of the can- -teen,in which an annular flanged ring C,pro-
vided with a screw-thread on its outer snrface, is secured.
D is a screw-cap fitting the screw portion of the said ring and provided witha mouth-tube E, which may be closed with a cork or other stopper. This cap, when screwed down, clamps a rubber gasket between it and the canteen and forms a water-tight joint.
F is a drinking-cup suspended from the cap by means of a bent handle H, catching into a loop c, attached to the under side of the cap. lVheu the cap is screwed down, one edge of the cup rests against the front side of the canteen and is thereby prevented from rattling or moving about.
I is a Candlestick fitted so as to set in the mouth-tube. The bottom of the canteen is intended to be made of copper and tinned on the inside, but may be made of ordinary tinned ware.
J J are legs attached to the bot-tom of the canteen in such a manner as that when it is desired to use the canteen for making tea or coffee, or for boiling meat, vegetables, sauce, or any description of food, they can be turned down so as to support it snfficently high for placing a lamp or other fuel beneath, or, when required for use as a canteen only, they can be folded up so as to occupy but little room.

By removing the screw-cap the canteen makes a very good sauce-pan. The drinking-cup being attached on the inside ofthe canteen enables the soldier to boil therein an egg while the process of boiling tea, coffee, or any other article ot' food or drink is going on in the canteen. It also enables him to carry it with more ease and comfort than when suspended from the knapsack or cartridge-box, and also protects it from injury.
