Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEE-ICE.
J. M. TROWBRIDGE, OF UNITED STATES ARMY.
IMPHOVED .CANTEEN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,655. dated November 17, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH M. TRow- BRlDGE, of the United States Army, have invented a new 'and -Improved Canteen; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makin g part of this speciication.
The object of this invention is to furnish each soldier' with a convenient and ready means of preparing coffee or Soup during pauses on the march or on picket or in bivouac, independently of the company supply-trains, or in other words, to enable each soldier to conveniently 'carry all the cooking apparatusv that is absolutely necessary.
Figure 1 exhibits acanteen in tbe closed condition. Fig. Zrepresents the parts ot' the canteen detached and ready for use.
.A is the bottle for carrying Water on the march. It is made to lit snugly within the boiler hereinafter described, either by iiaring upward in the manner represented or by any other approved device.
B represents my boiler, formed to receive and securely hold the bottle A, as seen in Fig. 1, or to allow ot' the easy separation of the latter, as seen in Fig. 2.
C U are ears to receive a bail, L, by which the boiler may be suspended over a tire or conveyed from spot to spot without spilling the contents.
D is a Sidehandle to facilitate the use ofthe boiler as a cup or bowl.
E E are rings or ears for a sling, O, by means ot' which the en tire canteen, when closed, may be suspended upon the person. An obvious advantage of thisarrangement is the easy access to the waterbottle, it not being necessary to unsling the Same, as with the common canteen.
My boiler serves all the purposes ot the cup ordinarily carried by the soldier, and in addition thereto forms a convenient pot for boiling coffee, soup, or other viands.
I claim as a new article of manufacture- The cooking-cailteen, composed of a bottle, A, and the inclosing boiler B C C D E E', or their equivalents, the whole being so adapted and arranged as to combine the functions ot' a canteen with those ot a cup and boiler, within convenient and portable limits, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
J. M. TROWBRIDGE.
Witnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, CHARLES L. FISHER.
