Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
4 S. BURR, OF CEDAR GROVE, VISCOSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,567', dated October 29, 1861.
To all whom, it may con/cern,.-
Beit known that I, S. BURR, of Cedar Grove, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have inventeda new and useful Machine that Combines a \Vashing-Machine and Press; andv I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to include within the fram'e of a single machine a Washing-machine and also a press, which may be used for pressing the water from wet clothes, or for pressing cheese, or for any other similar purpose to which presses of that character are applicable.
The machine consists, first, of an upright frame carrying a cranked shaft, to which are attached the dashers of a washing-tub, and, second, it consists of a press built in the frame of the machine and worked by levers that are also connected with the same frame.
To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l of the drawings is a sectional elevation of my said combined machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
The upright frame a a carries the cranked shaft b b, that revolves in bearings c c and works the dashers d d in the Wash-tub (represented in the drawings of the machine) by means of the rods e e. The shaft receives its motion through the pinionf on its end, which gears into thespur-wheel g, that is rotated by the handle h.
The press-box 'it has an inclined bottom that leads the water to the plug 7c, by which it may be drawn oif into the wash-tub. The frame of rods Z Z, upon which the clothes that are to be pressed are laid, is supported at the corners by the blocks of india-rubber m that equalizes the strain upon the press and obviate the risk of breaking down. The follower n has a bearing-beam o, on which rests the center of the lever 1'), that has the pin q at one end for a fulcrum, and is pressed down at the other end by the lever r, that has its fulcrum at s, and may be operated by the handle if and held in position by the pin u, that fits the series of holes made for its reception in the upright Ct. The pin q also may be shifted as required into any one of a series of holes in the upright by which it is carried.
The frame of the machine may be made in any suitable manner, but I prefer that it should be arranged shown in the drawings. It is obvious that the press may be used to advantage in pressing cheese as Well as clothes. The blocks of india-rubber m occasion a unifomity of pressure if the press should be more packed on one side than the other.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The Washing-machine constructed and arranged, substantially as described, with a cranked shaft working the dashers of a tub, and a press with an elastic bearing delivering the drainage to the` tub, combined in the man ner specified.
S. BURR.
