Definitions

  • the present invention relates to bedding or bed clothes in general and more specifically to an improved bedding coverlet and structural combination of bedding coverlets which cooperate to greatly simplify and reduce the number of individual pieces of bed clothing which are normally used to make up a bed exclusive of the mattress structure. According to the present invention a comfortable and adequate bedding assembly may be made up utilizing only two basic components which may be identical in structure and completely reversible and interchangeable.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a bedding arrangement which greatly improves and simplifies that in common usage and which presents significant advantages in both comfort and economy over known arrangements.
  • FIG. 1 is a plan view of the basic coverlet unit of the invention
  • FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of a folded top coverlet
  • FIG. 3 is an elevational view of a properly folded bottom coverlet
  • FIG. 4 is an elevational view showing the top and bottom coverlets in the assembled condition
  • FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the button fastener according to the present invention.
  • FIG. 6 is a partially sectioned detail showing the button fastener in the engaged position
  • FIG. 7 is a schematicillustration of one method of buttoning the top and bottom coverlets
  • FIG. 8 is a schematic illustration of a second method of buttoning the coverlets.
  • FIG. 9 is an exploded view showing an alternative arrangement wherein bed sheets may be applied to the top and bottom coverlets if desired.
  • FIG. 1 is a plan view of one of the basic coverlet units which combine to form the novel construction according to the present invention.
  • the coverlet may be constructed from two layers of bedding cloth 2 and 3 which may be rectangular or any other desired shape and which are stitched around the peripheral edges in a conventional manner.
  • the cloth layers 2 and 3 may enclose a padding material 4 composed of a suitable natural or synthetic fibrous mat such as conventionally used in blankets and the like.
  • the padding material and the material of the cloth layers may be chosen for proper weight and quality depending upon the desired use. In most instances it is preferable to form the coverlet with a rectangular outline so as to conform to the size and shape of the bed upon which the bedding is to be utilized.
  • coverlet is transversely- Likewise the opposite end of the coverlet 1 is provided with a second transverse seam 7 forming a second easily foldable narrow strip 8 on the opposite end of the coverlet.
  • the seam 5 will be located so that the coverlet is divided into two major parts, the larger of which includes the strip 8 and is approximately the length of the bed upon which the coverlet is to be placed.
  • buttons fastener comprises identical button hole structures in two mating coverlets which are aligned when the coverlets are assembled according to the present invention and as illustrated in FIG. 6.
  • Each button hole structure is preferably formed by insets 9 and 10 of elastic material which are triangular in plan view but which may be of any configuration as long as straight line adjacent free edges are provided which form the button hole.
  • a button member 11 having an eyelet 12 is secured to one edge of one of the elastic inserts on one of the coverlets and buttoning is accomplished by merely inserting the button member, which is spherical in shape in the illustrated embodiment, through the button holes in the respective coverlets.
  • each coverlet 1 is provided with a number of button hole structures which are identical innumber to the button fasteners and aligned transversely therewith.
  • the structure thus far described completes the essential structure for each individual coverlet and it will be understood that a second coverlet identical in structure as the first coverlet is utilized in the combination.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates the manner in which a bottom coverlet is placed on the bed and it will be noted that the foldable portion 6 has been folded on itself twice in order to provide a pad of some thickness which serves as a pillow for the sleepers head.
  • the portion let as illustrated in FIG. 2 is formed by turning the coverlet 1 end for end and folding the left end, including the portion 6, downwardly and the portion 8 upwardly. In this position it will be noted that the button holes of the top coverlet now match the button fasteners of the bottom coverlet and vice versa.
  • the foldable portion 6 of the topcoverlet is folded beneath the end of the bottom coverlet and the two coverlets may be securely fastened together by inserting the buttons 11 through the respective button holes of the coverlets.
  • the port-ion 8 of the top coverlet forms a turned down flap which may be utilized by the sleeper once he is between the two coverlets.
  • FIGS. 7 and 8 illustrate schematically two alternative ways in which the top and bottom coverlets may be buttoned along their side edges.
  • FIG. 7 illustrates the arrangement wherein the coverlets are laid flat one on top of the other as described and illustrated in FIG. 4.
  • FIG. 8 illustrates an alternative form of buttoning which provides a more draft free enclosure for sleeping wherein the edges of the top and bottom coverlets and upwardly respectively before an overlapping seam.
  • the cloth sheet members 13 and 14 which may be of any convenient size and preferably of such a size so as to completely cover the inside they are assembled.
  • the sheets will be provided with conventional button holes which are arranged to match the button holes on each of It will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that the present bedding arrangement provides significant results over prior art bedding arrangements in that the coverlet members are easily assembled, completely reverbuttoning so as to form 6 if so desired.
  • the top cover-- are turned downwardly surfaces of the coverlets when the coverlet pieces as illustrated.
  • the bedding arrangement according to the present invention finds Wide utility not only in bedding for the home but in instances where frequent bedding changes must be made such as in hotels, trains, etc. It is also to be noted that the basic coverlet may be widened by simply buttoning additional units in side by side relationship and that the assembled top and bottom coverlets both may be thus extended to enlarge the bedding device.
