Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. MORRISON, 0F EAST SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IM PROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,490, dated October 15, 188i.
To all! whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JoHN lt. MORRISON, of East Springlicld, in the county of Jelerson and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in hashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clean', and exact description 0E the saine, reference being had to the aceon'ipanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A represents the washbox, which may be constructed in the shape represented, or it may be made round or any other desirable shape. This box is divided by a partition li, which may be provided with corrugated zinc on both sides,as is usual with the ordinary wash-board. The partition Bexteuds from the bottom ofthe box toabout one-half its height. It, maybe higheror lower than this, but I usually have the partition about one-half the height of the box.
C represent two rubbers which are corrugated and covered with zinc, and which are secured to the lower ends of the spring-bow E. These rubbers embrace the partition B between them und press against it.
E represen is a bow, the arms oil which may he mode either of metal or wood,so that they will spring. 'ihc top of this bow is provided with a. slot, into which a lever F is secured by means of a pivot or pin. tends up by the sido of the box A.
F represents a lever, one end oi' which is pivoted to the top of the upright H, while the other emi is free to be grasped by the hand for nso. 'lhe bow l is attached to the lever near its center.
An upright I-I ex-V a is a screw which passes through the arms of the bow for the purpose oi opening orciosing them or for increasing or decreasing the pressure of the rubbers upon the dividinghoard.
When this machine is to be used, the clothes are placed in the box, and, being wet, are spread over the dividing-board B. The rubbers C C then pass down over the clothes and prees them tightly against it. The hand is then placed on the lever, and when itis worked up and down the rubbers C C rnb and wash the clothes. When it is desired to change the position of the clothes, the lever is raised, so as to remove the rubbers from the board B. The clothes are then adjusted and the rubbers nro returned to their position for washing. The rubbers, as also the dividingboard, may be made in a skeleton Eorm,so as to allow of a free passage of water through them to the clothes. It wiil readily be seen that by means of this arrangement n very simple and effective machine is made-a machine which cannot get ont of order, and which can be used by any one, however unskillfnl, with perfect success.
Having thusfully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe spring-bow E,constructed asdescribed and provided with the setscrew a, when used in connection with the lever F and the dividing-board C, the whole bei ng arranged to operate as and for the purpose specified.
JOllN R. MORRISON.
