Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL DAVIS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,634, dated August- 25, 1863..
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL DAvIs, a resi` dent of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a top view, ot' a washing-machine provided with my invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken on the lines s of Fig. l.
My invention has reference to the machine for which Letters Patent No. 34,292 were granted February 4, 1862, to myself and Leander Davis; and it consistsin a combination ot' inner suds-reservoir holders and centralizers with leverstandards to be applied to the tub or outer sudsreservoir, substantially as hereinafter described; also, in the arrangement of the connection of the two operative levers relatively to them and their fulcra.
In the said drawings, A denotes the tub or outer sudsrese'rvoir.
B is the inner suds-rcservoir or tub, which is arranged within the tub A, and so that theremay be a water-space, b b, between the tvo. The bottom as well'as the sides of the inner sudsreservoir, B, is provided with numerous holes made through it, as seen at a a and c c.
O is the plunger, which is perforated with holes d d, has an upright or post, D, projecting upward centrally from it, and has its bottom surface ribbed or corrugated. The post D is connected with a lever, F, by two con neetion-bars, E E, which are arranged on opposite sides of the lever and post, and are connected to them by pins h l l. The fulcrum i of the said lever F is on the upper part of a standard, j, which projects laterally over and is fastened to the suds-reservoir A; There is also another such standard, p, which is fastened to the opposite side of the reservoir A, and serves to support the fulerum o of another and longer lever, q. Each of the standards l p locks on the top of the reservoir A, and has jointed to it a reservoirholder, B, which consists of an arm formed as shown in Fig. 1. When on its lowest position, each of the said arms rests in contact with and in a notch formed in one of two short cleats or continuations, T T, affixed to the outer curved surface of the reservoir B.
While the parts T T serve to eentralize the the tub B within the tub A, the parts R R not only keep the tub from rising within the tub A during the vertical movements of the plunger C, but they prevent the tub B from turning around horizontally within the tub A. A swing-hasp, U, serves to keep the pin h in place when in the parts E E and lever F. The connection of the two levers q F is shown at V W, it being arranged vertically between them. It consists of a hook, V, shaped as shown in the drawings, and a forked piece of metal, W, provided with a pin, X, extending across it horizontally. The parts V W are fastened, respectively, to the two levers F and Byl means of the peculiar construction of the lever-connection V IV, and its arrangement relatively to the two tulera i o and their levers, the latter with the plunger can be operated to better advantage than the two levers can by the connection exhibited in the patent aforementioned.
With the improved' connection the levers are not so liable to be broken or split at the connection as they are in the other connection and arrangement of levers as represented in the said patent.
Instead of applying handles directly to the tub A, I apply them to or arrange them on the standards p j, respectively, as shown at Y Yin Figs. l and 2.
I do not herein claim the combination of the two suds-reservoirs and the. phinger, but what I do claim, when used in connection therewith, is as follows:
l. The combination of the inner sudsreservoir holders B. B and centralizers T T with the lever-standards pj, applied to the outer suds-reservoir, the whole being substantially and for the purpose or objects hereinbefore specified.
. 2. The improved arrangement of the connection V W of the two operative levers q F, with respect to them and their fulcra o i.
' SAMUEL DAVIS. Witnesses:
