NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS E. ZIEGLE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOHN VAN RANGE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CATCH FOR OVEN-DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,728, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed May 1, 1855. Serial No. 164,095. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS E. ZIEGLE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Catch forOven-Dors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a gravitating catch or latch for oven-doors of stoves and ranges which enables such door to be closed tightly over the oven-entrance or to be set partially open at the will of the user, the construction being furthermore such as to permit easy handling of the latch without liability of scorching the operators fingers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my catch in its open condition. Fig. 2 is a top view of the latch proper. Figs. 3 and 4 are top views of my said catch, Fig. 3 representing the latch simply engaged in the keeper, and Fig. 4. representing the latch wedged tightly in the rear notch of the keeper, so as to bring the door in close contact with the oven-front. Fig. 5 is a section in the plane 5 5. v
A may represent a portion of the front plate of the oven of a stove or range, and B may represent a portion of the oven-door. Projecting from the plate A, a little above the oven-opening, is a keeper or striker, C, whose beveled under edge has two notches, c c.
A portion of my latch D consists ofajournal or pivot, E, which occupies the hub g of a guard or housing, G, whose shoulders g g operate to limit the play of the said latch. Said latch has a gravitating handle, F, whose form and location relatively to the latch proper and to the oven-door are such as to render said handle readily accessible and free from liabilitv to become overheated. The head H of the latch has therepresented wedge form in order that after engagement of the latch in the rear notch, c, of the keeper the user can, by pressing downward upon the handle F, cause the said wedge-formed latch-head to bind more firmly in said notch, so as to bring the oven-doors rear side in closer contact with the oven-front and to effectually close the opening thereof. If, on the other hand,it is desired to permit external air to enter and circulate within the oven, the door may beset ajar for that purpose by the engagement of 0 the latch within the outer notch, c.
1 claim as new and of my invention The combination of the guard G g g g, the latch D, having gravitating handle F, a pivot portion, E, and a wedge-shaped head, H, and the notched keeper C c c, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
LOUIS E. ZIEGLE.
