G.VW. lMUDD.
STOVE PIPE DAMPER.
Patentedy Jan. 19, 1886.
WHA/8853 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MUDD, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
sTovE-PIPE DAMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,715, dated January 19, 1856.
Application filed Decemberl, 1884. Serial No. 150,856. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MUDD, a cltizen of the United States of America, residing lat the city of Columbus, inthe county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in single-bearing stove-pipe dampers; and it consists, rst, of a handle which forms the spindle and guide, and, second, ofa damper-plate provided with a slotted head to receive the spindie, and these in combination with other features, all as more fully hereinafter described.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inwhich Figure l is a 1ongitudinal section; Figy2, a separate view of the handle, and Fig. 3 a detached View of the damperplate and slotted head. l
In the drawings, A represents ay section of pipe and B the damper, which may be formed of any circular piece ot' metal.
C is the handle and spindle, consisting of a wooden cross-piece, d, and the spindle part E, provided with round portionf, the collar g, and at its lower end with the shank'portion H, terminating in the lugsi. The plate B has cast or otherwise made integral therewith a boss, L, provided with a slot, M, and open notches a a, forming channels at right angles to the slot M. The slot M is adapted to receive the end of the spindle-shank, and when passed through the same and the handle is turned, the lugs i i rest and are secured in the channels n. To provide room in Whichto thus turn the shank, the plate is provided 4l S is acup or sleeve placed over the spindle, v
bearing against the collar g, and constituting a chamber for a spiral spring, t, which surrounds the round portionfof the spindle and bears directly against the pipe.
To adapt the invention to use, the cup S is put on the spindle, the spiral spring inserted in the cup around the'spindle, the shank ot` the handle then inserted through a hole in the pipe, the washer and plate put in place, and the shank inserted through the boss L and turned until the lugsz' rest in the notches n. lt will be seen that there are but tive separate parts in this damper, consisting of the plate, washer, handle, sleeve, and spring, thus giving simplicity to the structure, removing friction, &c.
What l. claim ism Astove-pipe damper comprising the handle provided with the collar g, the spindle part E, shank H, and lugs iz', in combination with the separate cup, spiral spring, the washer, and the damper-plate, the latter having formed on one edge and integral therewith the double slotted boss L, adapted to receieve the washer, and having the recess o in the plate beyond said boss, to aid in the operation of the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaiiix my si gnature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. lWIUDD. Vitnesses:
AUG. N. WHITING, T. M. LIvEsAY.
