(Cl. 325) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pillow supported on a bed by two straps forming a first loop extending around the pillow and a second loop extending around a portion of the bed, the first loo being formed by a single eye member and the second loop being formed by a double eye member is disclosed.

This invention relates to a pillow and pillow holder, and more particularly to a device of this character which may be releasably secured to a hospital bed for maintaining the pillow in a position under a patients head when the head of the bed is tilted in a known manner.

Hospital beds are normally made with a mattress or individual supporting surface with at least one end thereof being tiltably mounted with respect to the remainder so that the head portion thereof may be tilted, enhancing the comfort of the patient.

It is a primary object of the instant invention to provide a pillow including means releasably attachable to a fixed portion of the bed whereby the pillow will be secured against inadvertent movement.

Another object of the instant invention is to provide a pillow and pillow holder of the character described whereby the pillow is releasably secured to the means aflixed to the bed whereby the pillow may be changed without removing the pillow and pillow holder from the bed.

Still another object of the instant invention is to provide a pillow and pillow holder which may be readily manufactured, easily assembled and disassembled and which is inexpensive to make, assemble and maintain.

A more specific object of the instant invention is to provide a strap for securing a pillow to a bed including means selectively forming a loop at each end thereof.

Still other objects and advantages of the instant invention, as well as the invention itself, reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction and utilization, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawing wherein there are shown preferred embodiments of this inventive concept.

FIGURE 4 is a front elevational view of another form of strap utilizable with the instant invention.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein like reference characters designate like elements throughout the several views thereof, there is indicated generally at a hospital bed comprising a frame designated generally at 12 including a pair of vertical supports 14 at the head of the bed interconnected by a pair of

horizontal supports

16, 18 which are in turn interconnected by a plurality of small decorative rods 20 with a mattress or individual supporting surface 22 being tilta-ble at one end thereof from the solid line position shown in FIG- URE 1 to the dashed line position shown at 23 in FIG URE 1.

A combination pillow and pillow holder designated generally at 24 is releasably afiixed to upper horizontal support 16, as may be seen in FIGURE 1, and includes a soft, pliable, flexible, stuffed cushion or pillow 26 which may be covered with a suitable ticking and enveloped in a pillow case. Pillow 26 is preferably rectangular in front elevation and is surrounded by a pair of spaced apart straps shown generally at 28 afiixing pillow 26 to frame 12 of hospital bed 10.

As may be seen in FIGURES 2 and 3, straps 28 include a substantially straight elongate strip 30 made of leather, plastic, nylon, rayon, cotton or the like, having a rectangularly configured eye shown generally at 32 secured at one end thereof. Eye 32 includes a pair of parallel rods 34 transverse to the longitudinal axis of strip 30 and connected together by another pair of rods 36. Eye 32 is secured to strap 28 by reverting the terminal end 38 of strip 30 surrounding one of rods 34 and securing it to strip 30 in any suitable manner, as by gluing, stitching or the like, as may be seen in FIGURE 2.

The other end of strip 30 carries a buckle-shaped framework indicated generally at 40, including a first brace 42 transverse to the longitudinal axis of strip 30 and secured to the terminal end thereof in much the same manner as eye 32 is secured thereto. Frame 40 also includes a second brace 44 and a third brace 46 on either side of first brace 42 and held in a parallel substantially coplanar relationship by a pair of supporting rods 48.

To form strip 28 into the configuration shown in FIG- URES 1 and 2 in order to secure pillow26 to frame 12, it is necessary to first place buckle-shaped frame 40 rearwardly of horizontal support 16 bringing strip 30 over the upper edge thereof to secure third brace 46 between strip 30 and support 16 as may be seen in FIGURE 2. Eye 32 is then threaded between first and

42, 44 thus securing strap 28 to support 16. After the bed surrounding loop is completed, the pillow encasing loop may be created by pulling an intermediate portion of strip 30 through eye 32 resulting in the structure shown in FIGURE 2.

It will be readily apparent that strap 28 releasably secures pillow 26 to bed 10 such that pillow 26 may be removed by enlarging the loop formed by eye 32 and strip 30 with pillow and pillow holder 24 being removable from bed 10 by disassembling strap 28 reversing the assembly procedure previously mentioned.

An alternate form of pillow holder is shown generally at 50 in FIGURE 4 and includes an elongate strip of material 52 of any suitable type having the lower end thereof reverted and secured at 54 as stitching, gluing or the like, forming a fixed loop of a similar size and shape as that formed by pillow holder 28. The upper end of strip 52 carries a male snap 56 and a spaced first female snap 58 providing means for creating a loop which may be positioned about horizontal support 16, fastening pillow holder 50 thereto in a similar manner as that previously mentioned. In order to provide an adjustable connection, accommodating a larger horizontal support or positioning pillow 26 at a desired position, an additional female snap 6G is spaced from snap 58 along the longitudinal axis of strip 52. It will be noted that pillow 26 may be readily removed from strip 50 by merely slipping the loop formed thereby over the end of pillow 26.

It is now seen that there is herein provided an improved pillow and pillow holder having all of the objects of the instant invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.

Since many embodiments may be made of the instant inventive concept, and since many modifications may be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

I claim:

1. In combination, a pillow having at least one face of generally rectangular configuration, and at least two straps, each of the straps carrying the first means at one end thereof forming a first loop, the first loops surrounding the pillow in spaced apart relation, each of the straps carrying second means on the other end thereof selectively forming a second loop for receiving a horizontal bed support, the second loop forming means including a frame forming at least two spaced apart generally coplanar braces, the terminal end of the strap being affixed to the first brace, the second brace being positioned intermediate the strap, the length of the strap from the first brace to the second brace being longer than the straight line distance between the two braces.

2. The structure of claim 1 wherein the frame includes a third brace generally coplanar with the first and second braces, the first brace being positioned between the second and third braces, the strap extends over the third brace and then between the first and second braces.

3. The structure of claim 2 wherein the first means includes an eye of a size sutficient to receive the strap, the eye being positioned intermediate the strap in order to form the first loop.

4. The structure of claim 2 including a bed having an individual supporting surface, means for angularly positioning at least one end of the supporting surface with respect to the remainder thereof, a horizontal support at the end of the bed corresponding to the one end of the angularly positionable supporting surface, the first loop being received over the horizontal support.

Claims

1. IN COMBINATION, A PILLOW HAVING AT LEAST ONE FACE OF GENERALLY RECTANGULAR CONFIGURATIN, AND AT LEAST TWO STRAPS, EACH OF THE STRAPS CARRYING THE FIRST MEANS AT ONE END THEREOF FORMING A FIRST LOOP, THE FIRST LOOPS SURROUNDING THE PILLOW IN SPACED APART RELATION, EACH OF THE STRAPS CARRYING SECOND MEANS ON THE OTHER END THEREOF SELECTIVELY FORMING A SECOND LOOP FOR RECEIVING A HORIZONTAL BED SUPPORT, THE SECOND LOOP FORMING MEANS INCLUDING A FRAME FORMING AT LEAST TWO SPACED APART GENERALLY COMPLANAR BRACES, THE TERMINAL END OF THE STRAP BEING AFFIXED TO THE FIRST BRACE, THE SECOND BRACE BEING POSITIONED INTERMEDI-
