SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,636, dated January 19, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BROMLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Carroll and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers;- and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable door-securers, the object being to provide a fastening device for doors withv a coinbinationlock attached thereto, so as to provide a fastening device which will preventthe door from being opened from the outside as well as from the inside, wherethe fastening is located, except by a peri son familiar with the combination.
My invention consists in av door-securer which is provided with disks having indicatingn'iarks on their peripheries, said disks being provided on their inner sides with openings with notches for the reception of open rings, which must be placed so as to register with each other beiore the parts of the fastener can be moved, so as to allow the door to be opened. My invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specilically pointed out in the claims. l
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure i is a side view of my improvement, showing the same closed,or in aposition to be carried in the pocket. A represents the body portion of my improved-door-fastener, which consists of au end piece, a, one or more of the sides of which are cnt away, as shown at c', and adjacent to this end piece is a circumferential recess, ct,with in which lies a collar, B, which has a projecting dange, b, one side of said collar and iiange being out away, as shown at b', so as to be on a line with a cut-away portion, a, of the end piece, ct. Adjacent to the circumferential recess a is an enlarged portion, A', which is formed on or attached rigidlyto the body portion A, and said portion A may have one or more of its sides cut away, so as to provide straight edges, which will bein the same plane longitudinally as the straight end piece, a. A circumferential recess, ct, for the reception of the ring C of the disk, is formed in the body portion A adjacent to the part A, and the part am is out away on one or opposite. sides, so that its interior screw-threaded portion will engage with the threads of the hasp, and from the outer side of this portion A eX- tends the cylindrical end a, one side of which is provided with a longitudinal recess,d, which extends from its end to the front end of the portion A, thus providing a passage-way in which the pin e, which is attached to the side of the hasp E, may play.
It will be noted 'in the construction hereinbefore described that the parts a, A', A", A, and A are all formed from a single piece of metal and are integral with each other, the recesses a, c", and d being formed therein.
The hasp E, as shown in Fig. 8, is made of a flat piece of metal having screw-threaded sides, and from one of said screwthreaded sides projects apin, e, which is adapted to fit within the recess d, the outer end of said hasp having the end portion which is bent at right angles, and is adapted to enter the door-frame and to be pressed into said frame when the door is closed thereon. rIhe opening through which the shank oi' the hasp passes is oblong or rectangular in cross'section, and the slot d, hereinbefore referred to, is formed by increasing the depth at its long sides, so as to provide a space through which the pin e may pass, this cut extending entirely through the end portion IOO A", and continuing an equal depth until it reaches the con neetin g portion 66 between the parts A and A.
Upon the end portion r are placed combinationrings F, the opening ftherein being of a sufficient depth to allow the piu c to pass through the same, and these open rings are provided opposite the openingsj with projecting portionsj", which enter recesses g iu the rings or disks G, said disks being provided on their peripheries with indieating-marks-as figures or letters. lt will be evident that by placing the projecting portionj" in different recesses ofthe disks G the combination can be changed. \\"hen the projcetiouj" is placed in one o1" the recesses f/ ofthe disk G,an opposite recess will register with the openingf, which is of sufficient depth to allow the pin c to pass through the same.
rlhe disks ofthe combination-lock are held in place by an end piece, I-l, which is screwthreaded 011 its interior, so as to engage with the threads on the tubular end of the body portion A, and this end piece may be held thereon by a set-screw, h, which will prevent the same being unscrewed. A ring is passed through an eye in the end piece H, and forms a convenient means for attaching the doorfastener to a key-ring or other object.
The disk C, as shown in Fig. 10, is made up of two parts, which are notched, and said parts are connected to each other by rivets. The notches within which the heads of the rivets lie are afterward filled with metal, so that thejoint will be imperceptible. The iiangering B is also made in two parts, which may be held together iu a similar manner, orits periphery may have the tlange portion B brazed thereon. rl`he periphery ofthe disk Gis milled, so that it can be readily turned, and by turning the same the shank of the hasp can be thrown into the body portion or extended therefrom.
To attach my improved fastener to a door so as to hold the same in a closed position, the combination is first set so that the openingsf in the rings F will be on alinewith each other, and also on a line with the pin e, which projects from the hasp. rlhe disk C is then turned so that it will force the hasp out of the body portion, said pin being located near the disk C, The ring B is then turned so that its straight portion a will be on a line with the straight side a ofthe end piece a. The hasp is then inserted inthe door-jamb and the door closed thereon. The st-raightsides of the end piece and ringB allow the door to close upon the hasp. After the door is closed the ring B is turned partially around, and thebody portion, by turning the disk C, is brought against the edge of the door-jamb. The disks of the combination-lock are then turned so as to prevent the pin sliding beyond the same, thus securing the hasp so that it cannot be moved within the case without first setting the lock at the proper combination.
By means of my improved device a door can be locked from the inside of a room, so that it cannot be opened without first removing the fastening device, and said fastening device cannot be removed except by a. person familiar with the combination. Thus it' a person is sharing a compartment with a stranger he can lock the door, so as to be free from intrusion without, and the person sharing the room cannot leave the same withouthisknowledge or being made familiar with the combination.
I claiml. In a door-secnrer, the combination, with a case, A, of a hasp, E, having a portion playing in said case, and provided at its free end with an angular portion adapted to be inserted and retained between theI door edge and jamb, and a combination-lock for locking said hasp, substantially as set forth.
2. In a door-fastening device,- tlie combination, with a movable hasp with angular projecting portion and body portion A, recessed for the reception of said shank, and having an end, a, with a straight side, of a movable ring attached to said end portion and provided with a cut away side, substantially as shown, and forl the purpose set forth.
