(Cl. 229-23) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A container employing a box part having a large opening in the top wall thereof and an accessible end for reception of a part inserted into the box and forming a closure for the opening in the top wall of the box part, the box part having means retaining the closure part against displacement therefrom and, further, wherein said closure part contains characterizations or markings identifying characteristics of merchandise contained in the box part beneath said closure part.

This invention relates to containers adapted for use in packaging merchandise of any type or kind and, by way of illustration, for packaging womens wearing apparal, such as brassieres and girdles. More particularly, the invention deals with a container comprising a primary box part and a closure part arranged in the box part and forming a closure for an opening in one wall of the box part and, wherein, said closure part forms a means for applying thereto display or identification characterizations of any type and kind and, in connection with garments as mentioned, identifications can identify styles and various garment sizes or other characteristics such, for example, as color, type of fabric, etc.

Still more particularly, the invention deals in a container assemblage of the character defined, wherein the one box part can be utilized in combination with many different types and kinds of closure parts having the different characterizations thereon, the closure part being normally flat to facilitate printing or lithographing thereof in the production of such closure part.

Further, the invention deals with a container of the character defined, wherein folded edges of the closure part form rounded exposed edges on the container arranged in recessed or cutout walls of the box part.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a container made according to my invention, showing a closure flap at one end of the container in a partially open position.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 22 of FIG. 1.

FIG. 3 is an enlarged partial section on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1.

FIG. 4 is a partial section on the line 4-4 of FIG. 2.

FIG. 5 is a plan view of the blank forming the box part of the container; and

FIG. 6 is a plan view of the blank forming the closure part of the container.

Considering FIGS. 5 and 6 of the drawing, 10 generally identifies'the box part of the container and 11 identifies the closure part. The box part 10 consists of a top wall defined by narrow and wide wall portions 12, 12' disposed at end portions of the container. The box part also includes

side walls

13 and 14, a bottom wall 15 and a supplemental side wall 16 adhesively secured to the inner surface of the wall 14, as clearly seen in FIG. 2 of the drawing.

Extending from the top wall portion 12 is an end closure wall or flap 17. Extending from the

13, 14 are two end flaps 18. Extending from the bottom wall 15 is an end wall 19.

Extending inwardly from the top wall parts 12, 12' are flaps 2t), 20' which fold inwardly upon inner surfaces of the parts 12, 12', respectively, in reinforcing the wall parts 12., 12. These flaps are shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawing. As folded in, the flaps form rounded edges 21 to a large opening in the top of the box part, the opening being generally defined by the reference character 22 in FIG. 1 of the drawing. The opening 22, however, extends onto both of the

side walls

13 and 14 by recesses or cutouts 13', 14 formed in these walls.

At the other end of the box part 10 is an end wall 23, including a foldable retaining flap 24 and at ends of the

side walls

13 and 14 are other closure flaps 25. 23, 24 and 25 control access to the compartment of the resulting container, as with other devices of this type and kind. From this standpoint in FIG. 1, 23 and 24 have been shown in a partially open position to clearly indicate this access. The other end wall portions are sealed together but, before this is done, in completing formation of the container, an end retainer flap 26 on the top wall portion 27 of the closure part 11 is positioned between the

17 and 19 and adhered thereto in the sealing of this end of the container, the flap 26 being shown in FIG. 4 of the drawing. In this assemblage, side walls 28 of the closure part 11 are folded downwardly and fit snugly upon inner surfaces of the

side walls

13 and 14, as clearly indicated in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The fold of the walls 28 is indicated by the score lines in FIG. 6 and these folds form rounded corners 29 exposed in the opening 22 or that part of the opening which extends into the recesses or cutouts 13, 14', so as to present round smooth edges exposed for engagement with the hand in the handling of the container. It will be understood that the end 30 of the closure part 11 terminates in close proximity to a closure flap wall 23, as clearly noted in FIG. 3 of the drawing.

At this time, it is pointed out that the end portions of the closure part 11 arranged within the otherwise reinforced wall parts 12, 12' further reinforce the end portions of the container to render the same sturdy in withstanding stresses or strains to which the container may be subjected in the handling thereof.

In the use of containers of the type andkind under consideration, one primary box part is employed to service numerous various types and kinds of containers to be produced in the packaging of merchandise to be placed in these containers for shipment and for retail display and sale. While the container has unlimited uses, the designations of various merchandise as to size, color and other characteristics are applicable to various clothing. By way of illustration, let us assume, for example, that the merchandise to be packaged is brassieres. Brassieres are made.

of dififerent fabrics and different styles, types or trade name characters and, in the different fabrics, styles, types or trade name characters, there are different sizes, such, for example, as the general body size and, in this body size, the particular cup size and further designations might indicate long styles as distinguishing from standard styles. Thus, in preparing the containers, the' closure parts are printed, lithographed or otherwise marked on the upper or exposed surface 27 of the wall 27 with the various markings identifyingthe merchandise in question, consistent with the filling of any particular over-all order. Therefore, it will be seen that the merchandise, consistent with the identifying markings on the surface 27', will be placed in the container prior to shipment and, then, when on sale, identification as to the various items noted will be clear to the purchasers or to the sales person making the sale to satisfy the customers requirements.

The above procedure eliminates the necessity of all types and kinds of labeling as applied to the garments or to the containers for the garments and avoids errors and, above all, simplifies and economizes upon the production and use of containers of the type and kind under consideration.

For purposes of description, the closure part could be generally referred to as a product identifying part, the structure and characters of which can be modified to suit numerous uses, the present showing being a simple form of arrangement, but the structure and particular shape or contour of the wall part 27 exposed within the box part can be modified. in many ways by cutouts in addition to the identifying markings noted by way of illustration.

In production of containers of the type and kind under consideration, it will be apparent that the supplemental side wall 16 can be secured to the side wall 14, maintaining the box part still in a fiat state for bulk shipment of the box parts. Then, in setting-up the box, the other wall portions are glued together, as heretofore mentioned.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A container of the character defined comprising a box part and a closure part mounted in and constituting part of the box part, said box part being defined by bottom, side and end walls and top wall parts including foldable flaps, said box part being closed at one end by end walls on said bottom wall and one of said top wall parts, including end flaps on side walls of the box part, the bottom wall including a side wall part adapted to be secured to one of the first named side walls in forming assemblage of the bottom and side walls and said top wall parts, the flaps of said top wall parts being arranged on and secured to inner surfaces of said top wall parts in forming on the top of the container a large opening intermediate said top wall parts, the end wall at the other end of the box part including a foldable retainer flap, which, in combination with closure flaps at the corresponding end of said side walls, forms a removable closure at the other end of the box part, said closure part comprising a top wall and foldable depending side walls adapted to be arranged in the box part, said top wall of the closure part having, at one end, a foldable retainer flap adapted to be secured between the first named end walls of the box part in retaining the closure part against of the side walls of said closure part form rounded corners exposed at sides of the opening in the top of the container part.

3. A container as defined in claim 2, wherein the first named side walls of the box part have their upper edges recessed to dispose upper edges of said side walls below the rounded corners of said closure part.

4. A container as defined in claim 1, wherein the side walls of said closure part are substantially equal in dimensions to the greatest depth of the first named side walls of the box part adjacent said top wall parts.

5. A container as defined in claim 1, wherein the upper surface of the top wall of said closure part provides means for applying identification markings for identifying characteristics of the merchandise packaged in the box part.

5. A container as defined in claim 1, wherein one basic box part is adapted for reception of closure parts having various identification characterizations applied to the closure part for exposure through the opening in the box part.

A container of the character described comprising two basic parts, namely a box part and a closure part, the box part comprising bottom, side and end walls and top wall parts, the box part having a large top opening intermediate said top wall parts, said box part being closed at one end by end walls on said bottom wall and one of said top wall parts, the end wall at the other end of the box part including a foldable retainer flap, which, in combination with closure flaps at the corresponding end of said side walls, forms a removable closure at the other end of the box part facilitating insertion and removal of the product to be mounted therein, said closure part being mounted in the box part and including a portion forming a closure to the opening in the top wall of the box part, and said portion of the closure part exposed through the opening in the box part being adapted to be characterized to identify predetermined characteristics of the product to be mounted in the box part.

8. A container as defined in claim 7, wherein said top wall of the closure part has at one end a foldable retainer flap adapted to be secured between the first named end walls of the box part in retaining the closure part against displacement from said box part.

Claims

1. A CONTAINER OF THE CHARACTER DEFINED COMPRISING A BOX PART AND A CLOSURE PART MOUNTED IN AND CONSTITUTING PART OF THE BOX PART, SAID BOX PART BEING DEFINED BY BOTTOM, SIDE AND END WALLS AND TOP WALL PARTS INCLUDING FOLDABLE FLAPS, SAID BOX PART BEING CLOSED AT ONE END BY END WALLS ON SAID BOTTOM WALL AND ONE OF SAID TOP WALL PARTS, INCLUDING END FLAPS ON SIDE WALL OF THE BOX PART, THE BOTTOM WALL INCLUDING A SIDE WALL PART ADAPTED TO BE SECURED TO ONE OF THE FIRST NAMED SIDE WALLS IN FORMING ASSEMBLAGE OF THE BOTTOM AND SIDE WALLS AND SAID TOP WALL PARTS, THE FLAPS OF SAID TOP WALL PARTS BEING ARRANGED ON AND SECURED TO INNER SURFACES OF SAID TOP WALL PARTS IN FORMING ON THE TOP OF THE CONTAINER A LARGE OPENING INTERMEDIATE SAID TOP WALL PARTS, THE END AT THE OTHER END OF THE BOX PART INCLUDING A FOLDABLE RETAINER FLAP,
