J. A. BUGLE. CLOTHESDRIBR.
No. 334,559 Patented Jan. 19, 1886.
WITNESSES INNTOB: :QL j B QQ@ ATTORNEYS.
'PATENT FFICE@ JOHN A. BOGLE, OF MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,559, dated January 19, 1886.
Application tiled April 7, 1885.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BOGLE, of Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Olothes-Drier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved clothes-drier, which is to be attached to the wall of a room, and which comprises a sliding frame and folding dryingrods, and is constructed in such a manner as to occupy comparatively a small amount of space and to give a large surface for drying the clothes.
The invention consists of a frame to be fastcned to a wall of a room and provided with a sliding frame having pivoted blocks to which folding rods are attached, on which the clothes to be dried are hung.
The invention also consists of a rope and pulleys for raising the sliding frame to or near to the ceiling.
The invention further consists of various parts and details, hereinafter morev fully set forth, and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view of my invention, showing one set of drying-rods folded up and the other set spread to receive the clothes for drying them Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the lines x x of Fig. l.. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section on the lines y y ot' Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail View of the rope-fastening device.
The main frame A consists of the two uprights-B B, connected by cross-bars C C and end bars, DD, and is to be fastened to the wall of a room in any suitable manner. The uprights B are provided on their inner edges with vertical grooves E, extending the entire length of the uprights B, to which uprights B are also fastened the guides F, vbetween which the sliding frame G runs, which frame is provided with grooved rollers G', pivoted in recesses G2 in the frame G. A rope, H, fastened at one end to the upper bar D passes downward under a grooved pulley, H', attached be- 10W the middle at the rear of the sliding frame Serial No. 161,492. (Model.)
` G, thence upward and over agrooved pulley,V
H, secured in a recess in the upper part of one upright B, and then passing downward on the outer side of said upright B is.
fastened by a clamping lever, I, riveted 'to an annular arm, I', attached to upright B on its lower outer side. rlhe sliding frame G is also provided on its lower and upper ends with wedge-shaped blocks K K, turning on pivots K. To the blocks K are fastened the strips K2, which project from the face of the blocks K and have holes K3 to receive the hooked ends of the drying-rods J. The drying-rods J are each made of agal- Vanized wire, which is bent in the center forming a loop, and the arms J', which are provided on their ends with hooks passing through the holes K3 in the side strips, K2, on the wedge-shaped blocks K. The block K can be held in a horizontal position by the latches Kt, pivoted on the sliding frame G. IIhe clamping-lever I for fastening the rope is grooved on its under edge.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows: The upper wedge-shaped block K is turned on its pivot K' into a horizontal position and fastened therein by the pivoted latch K4, and the drying-rods J are spread apart, as shown in the upper part of Fig. l, to receive the clothes to be dried. The lower wedgeshaped block K is adjusted likewise, and the sliding frame G,with the blocks K and dryingrods J', is then raised to or` near the ceiling and thereby brought in contact with the warmer air of the room by pulling on the rope H, which rope H is then fastened by .the clamping-lever I. The block K, being wedgeshaped, allows a compact folding of the dryingrods, as shown in the lower part of Figs. l and 2, when the frame is lowered.
One ormore than two of the blocks K provided with any number of rods J may be used, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y l. In a clothes-drier, the frame A, the guides F, and the sliding frame G, in combination with the pivoted wedge-shaped block K, and the drying-rods hung on the inclined face of the said block, substantially as shown and described.
IOO
5. In :t clothes-drier, the frame A, the rope 15 H, the greoved pulleys H' and H2, and the clamping-lever I, in combination with the sliding frame G, the pivoted latches K, the pivoted wedge-shaped bleek K, having strips K2, and the drying-rolls J, substantially as 2o set forth and described.
