Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. DIETZ, OF ST. MARYS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO ERNEST J. WIMMER, OF SAME PLACE.
PROCESS OF MAKING LEATHER WATER-PROOF.
2.?EQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,518, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed December 29, 1884. Serial No. 151,517. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. DIETZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Marys, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful composition of matter to be used upon tanned sole-leather, upper'leather, calfskin, and all other kinds of leather, and method of applying the same, for the purpose of making said leathers water-proof, and also more pliable and durable, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the followingingredients combined in the proportions stated I 5 and used as stated, viz: Cold water; Soak the leather therein thoroughly. After the leather is half-dry apply the following with asponge: sugar of lead, one ounce; hot water, one gallon. Then next apply the following with a difierent sponge: alum, (common potashalum,) two pounds; hot water, two gallons. These amounts will suffice for half a dozen hides. Said ingredients (sugar of lead and hot'water) are to be thoroughly mixed by agitation, as also are the alum and hot water.
In using the above-named composition the hides should be first well scoured and halfdried. The solutions must be applied upon both sides of the hides, and can be applied immediately to rough hides (half-dried) or after the hides are finished.
I am aware that compositions exist upon which Letters Patent have been issued and granted, which are used for thesame purpose, viz: N 0. 131,563, to RV. Roudiez on Septem- 5 her 24, 1872, and No. 250,874, to Valentine Belikan on December 13, 1881; but I am not aware that all of theingredients of my composition, in the proportions stated, have been used as above stated and applied, as stated 0 herein.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The within method of treatingleather and hides and the like to render them water-repel- 4 5 lent and pliable, consisting in applying water thereto, then partially drying the same, then applying a solution of sugar of lead and hot water, and subsequently applying a solution of alum and hot water, substantially as described.
2. The within compound for treating leather and hides and the like to render them waterrepellent and pliable, composed of two solutions, one being hot water one gallon and sugar of lead one ounce, and the other hot Water two gallons and alum two pounds, to be used in the order named, substantiallyas described.
