7 L. G. S HROEDER.
' FEED REGULATOR.
{ 6.6. fimwn UNITED STATES LEOPOLD O. SHROEDER, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
FEED-REGULATOR.
$PECIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,092, dated January 12, 1886.
Application filed August 31, 1885. Serial No. 175,748. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD O. SHROEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to noiseless feed-regulators used mainly with roller grinding-mills; and the object of my invention is to provide a laterally-yielding gate in connection with a feed-roll, a hopper, and inclined chutes independently hinged to the ends of said hopper and connected to the yielding gate and operated by the material received upon said chutes.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then be specifically set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a feed-regulator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of one of the gate-supporting rods and its guide.
In said drawings, A represents a frame in the form of a hopper carrying a feed-roller,
B, mounted in bearings in the lower end thereof. The hopper is intended to be located over the grinding or crushing rolls, B, of the mill.
To regulate the amount of material escaping from the hopper upon the surface of the rolls B there is suspended from the rods 0, by means of springmetal straps G a gate, D, extending the whole length of the roller B and bearing against the side .of the latter. This gate is capable of lateral motion toward and from the roller B under the impulse of pressure or of a weight against its inner side. The upper ends of the rods G are screw-threaded at c, and pass through lugs or hearingplates a, projecting from the side of the hopper A, and thumb-screws c, placed upon each rod 0 both above and below the plates a, clamp said rods to the latter at any desired point, so that the height of the gate D above the roll B can be adjusted, and any wear of the gate against the roll can be compensated.
To increase the efficiency and sensitiveness of this feed-regulator, there are projecting laterally from the gate D, toward and into the hopper A, two arms, D and upon their inner ends are hinged vertical rods E, the upper ends of which are rounded or ball-shaped and received in inverted-cup-shaped sockets f, secured to the under sides and adjoining the lower ends of inclined chutes F, havinghinges f 2 at their upper ends, by which they are attached to the ends of the frame A. The upper part of said frame is made rectangular, so that the lower ends of chutes F can play up and down without being interfered with by the inclined sides in its lower portion forming the hopper to direct the material to the feedroll. In place of the sockets f, hinges may be used to connect the rods E with the chutes F. The weight of any material accumulating upon the chutes will be transmitted by the rods E to the inner ends of the arms D and, bearing them down, will force the lower edge of the gate outwardly, as its fulcrum o is on one side of the center of the hopper. This fulcrum is at the junction of the spring-metal straps C with the rods 0, as the lower portions of the latter are prevented from moving laterally by the dovetailed edges of the vertical grooves in the bearing-plates a secured to the side of the hopper.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of a hopper, a roller in LEOPOLD O. SHROEDEB.
