INVENTOR Ear] L. Marcoux Aug. 22, 1967 E. 1.. MARcouX CABINET 2 Sheets- Sheet 2 Filed Jan; -21', 1966 Earl L. Mcr'coux BY I N V1: N TOR United States Patent 3,337,284 CABINET Earl L. Marcoux, 506 Main St., Mosinee, Wis. 54455 Filed Jan. 21, 1966, Ser. No. 522,301 6 Claims. (Cl. 312-330) This invention relates to cabinets. It pertains particularly to miniature cabinets of the class designed to contain jewerly and other small personal items.
It is the general purpose of the present invention to provide a miniature cabinet of unique and distinctive appearance which is balanced and stable even though supported on but three legs, which makes use of integral cabinet components as the drawer and lifting handles, and in which the legs are integrated into the cabinet design, giving the cabinet a unique and singularly striking appearance.
In the drawings:
FIGS. 1 and 2 are views in front and side elevation, respectively, partly broken away, and FIG. 3 is a perspective view, illustrating the design and construction of the cabinet of my invention.
In its broadest aspect, the presently described cabinet comprises a pair of drawer cases open at the front and arranged horizontally side by side. At least one drawer slidably is mounted in each drawer case.
A vertical center panel is secured between the cases. This panel has a terminal downward extension forming a central leg for the cabinet on one end thereof.
A pair of vertical side panels are secured one on the outside of each case. Each side panel has a downward extension forming a side leg for the cabinet on the end of the cabinet opposite the center leg thereof.
There thus is provided a stable, useful, three legged cabinet of unique structure and design.
Considering the foregoing in greater detail and with particular reference to the drawings:
As noted above, the cabinet of the invention is designed primarily as an ornamental miniature cabinet for use in storing jewelry and other small items. For this use it includes a pair of drawer cases open at the front and arranged horizontally side by side.
Each drawer case comprises a bottom piece 10, inner and outer side pieces 12, 14, respectively, a top piece 16 and a back piece 18. If desired, the case pieces may be used as exterior pieces in which event they are contoured and ornamented in any desired manner. In the illustrated form of the invention top piece 16 and back piece 18 are used in this manner.
Each drawer case mounts one or more drawers 20 arranged one above the other and mounted slidably, the bottom drawer on bottom piece 10, and the top drawer on drawer slides 22.
It is to be noted particularly that each drawer is provided with a face panel 24 of sufiicient size and extent to overlap the open face of the drawer case in which it is contained. It thus contributes to the design appearance of the cabinet and also serves as an integral drawer pull by means of which the drawer may be opened.
The cabinet of the invention also includes as a primary structural and design feature a vertical center panel 26. This is secured between the drawer cases, as by being glued to the adjacent inner side faces 12.
Center panel 26 may extend beyond the plane of the drawer cases on all sides and may be contoured as desired to contribute to the overall design effect. In addi tion, it is provided with a terminal downward extension 28 which may extend either forwardly or rearwardly to supply a gracefully tapered front or back leg which assists in supporting the cabinet.
Still further, central panel 26 may be provided with an upwardly extending, centrally located ring 30, which serves as an integral handle for carrying the cabinet from place to place.
The cabinet assembly also includes a pair of vertical side panels 32 glued or otherwise secured one on the outside face of each of case side pieces 14. If desired, and as in the illustrated form of the invention, each side panel may be formed in a pair of overlapped segments to achieve a particularly striking design effect. Thus side panel segment 34 may be secured to side panel segment 32 in spaced parallel relation thereto, the two panels being spaced apart by means of spacing element 36.
Like central panel 30, overlapped side panels 32, 34 may be dimensioned to extend beyond the planes of the face surfaces of the drawer case and contoured in a desired design. In addition, one or the other of overlapped side panel segments, preferably exterior segment 34, is formed with a downward extension 38 which extends in the direction opposite to the direction of extension of center panel extension 28 and which serves as a gracefully tapered side leg for the cabinet. Normally and preferably central extension 28 will extend forwardly of the cabinet and side extensions 38 rearwardly thereof, although these relative positions may be reversed if desired. In either case, a unique three-point support is provided.
It thus will be apparent that by the present invention I have provided a cabinet construction which is uniquely suited to the manufacture of miniature jewelry cabinets of distinctive design and stable construction.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A cabinet comprising (a) a pair of drawer cases open at the front and arranged horizontally side by side,
(b) at least one drawer slida'bly mounted in each drawer case,
(c) a vertical center panel secured between the cases,
(d) the center panel having a terminal downward extension forming a central leg for the cabinet on one end thereof, and
(e) a pair of vertical side panels secured one on the outside of each case,
(f) each side panel having a downward extension forming a side leg for the cabinet on the end of the cabinet opposite the center leg thereof.
2. The cabinet of claim 1 wherein the central leg is positioned at the front end and the side legs at the rear end of the cabinet.
3. The cabinet of claim 1 wherein the front leg is arranged rearwardly and the side legs are arranged forwardly of the cabinet.
4. The cabinet of claim 1 wherein each side panel comprises a composite of two overlapped panels secured together in spaced relation, the outermost bearing the leg extension.
5. The cabinet of claim 1 wherein each drawer has a face panel dimensioned to overlap the case in which it is mounted, the overlapping margins of the drawer face panel providing a drawer pull.
6. The cabinet of claim 1 wherein the center panel is provided with an upwardly extending, centrally located, integral handle for carrying the cabinet.
