3 Claims. (Cl. 132-40) This application is a division of applicants co-pending application, Ser. No. 410,844, filed Oct. 29, 1964, which was a continuation of applicant's then co-pending application, Ser. No. 140,765, filed Sept. 26, 1961, both prior applications having been abandoned.

This invention relates to hair curling and more particularly to a hair roller and a lever actuated, spring action clip used therewith.

The general object of this invention is to provide a new, improved, more efficient and economical hair clip and combination thereof with a hair roller.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved hair roller, hair clip combination in which the clip is spring pressed, lever actuated and the operating mechanism is disposed entirely within the roller, yet is easily operated, by the user, with a single hand, for insertion into and removal from the roller in order to clamp the hair thereto and hold the roller in position on the head.

Another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved hair roller, hair clip combination in which the clip is coextensive with the hair roller to the end that the length of the assembled hair roller and hair clip is effectively no greater than that of the roller alone so that more curls, disposed closer together, may be formed on the head of hair being curled.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved lever actuated, spring action hair clip which is economical to make and use; which is efficient and effective in operation; which is formed of a single integral member; and, which does not protrude lengthwise from the hair roller with which it is used.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved hair roller, hair clip combination in which the clip is a lever actuated, spring action, one piece member which is operable by one hand and in which the entire clip can be disposed within the hair roller except for the portion thereof which grips the exterior of the rolled hair.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved hair clip, and combination thereof with a hair roller, obtaining one or more of the objects and advantages set forth above.

These and other objects and advantages of this inven tion will appear from the following description of a preferred form thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 is a view, partly in section, of a combination hair roller and hair clip embodying this invention;

FIGURE 2 is an end view of the hair roller and hair clip shown in FIGURE 1;

FIGURE 3 is a top view, on an enlarged scale, of the hair clip shown in FIGURE 1 and embodying this invention; and,

FIGURE 4 is a side elevational view of the hair clip shown in FIGURE 3.

Broadly, this invention comprises a new and improved combination of a hair roller of conventional hollow cylindrical shape and of any desired material and of a new and improved lever actuated, spring action hair clip formed of a single member and of such structure that 3,335,734 Patented Aug. 15, 1967 substantially the entire hair clip co-extends lineally with the hair roller, so that the entire length of the assembled roller and clip is functional for forming a hair curl and the hair curls may be formed more closely together because the rollers need not be spaced apart by the length of any hair clip operating mechanism or protruding clip part.

More particularly, a hair roller and hair clip combination embodying this invention is indicated generally at 1, FIGURE 1, and comprises a hair roller 2 and a new and improved hair clip 4.

Roller 2 is of any desired construction and material and, per se, forms no part of this invention. The roller 2 shown is of hollow, tubular construction and is provided with a plurality of holes 5 to facilitate drying the curl formed therearound.

In use the roller is positioned adjacent the ends of the hair strands to be formed into the particular curl. The hair ends are placed against the roller and the hair rolled up on the roller to form the curl, a pin or clip is then used to engage the roller and the hair roller therearound to hold the hair and roller in place, respectively.

It has been found desirable and much. more sanitary and emcient to use lever actuated, spring action hair clips to hold the hair and roller in place. Such clips can be operated with one hand, while the other temporarily holds the roller in place and are more sanitary than conventional bobby pins and the like which the user, with one hand occupied, finds necessary to open with the other hand and her teethan unhealthy and unsightly practice. The use of lever actuated, spring action clips has had the disadvantage, however, of requiring that the clip operating mechanism extend longitudinally outwardly from the roller. This has an undesirable appearance, when in use, but more disadvantageously has required spacing the rollers (and therefore the curls) sufficiently far apart to allow room for protruding mechanism.

The clip 4, in combination with the roller 2, obviates this disadvantage, while at the same time being of simple and economical structure which is easily and efiiciently manufactured and used.

In its preferred form clip 4, as best seen in FIGURE 4, comprises a single, integral member of metal, or other convenient material, which is bent and formed to have a flat, longitudinally extending first gripping arm portion 7, a reentrant second arm portion 8, which extends forwardly from the end of arm 7 in spaced, parallel relation therewith and is of less length than arm 7, a loop or spring portion 11 a third arm portion 11 extending rearwardly from loop 10 and at an angle to arm 8, and a second gripping arm or portion 13. Arm 13 extends forwardly over the arm 11 and spring 10 and then toward and ultimately in a generally parallel direction with arm 7 and terminates preferably substantially coextensive with the arm 7.

Arms 7 and 13 grip the hair and roller on either side to hold the same in place and are used in combination with the roller so that the flat arm 7 is exteriorly of the roller and hair rolled thereupon, (thereby not materially increasing the diameter and bulk of the rolled curl) and arm 13 is within the hollow interior of the roller.

Arms 8 and 11, together with loop 10, function as spring means to urge arms 7 and 13 into gripping engagement with each other or the hair and roller disposed there between as the case may be. In order to separate arms 7 and 13 and open the clip, the user need only press the rearward extremity of arm 13, as at A, toward the arm 7 with one finger while holding against arm 7 with the thumb or other fingers. The clip may then be slid easily into position over the rolled hair and into the roller. Extremity A preferably, as shown, is ctr-extensive with the rearward end of arm 7 so that the clip does not protrude from the roller when placed thereon. Albeit, extremity A may be lengthened to protrude only slightly, W for example, from the roller for easier engagement by the user either when placing the clip in position or removing it from the roller when the crul is set if desired. Also, the bend 14, between the arms 7 and 8, is of radius at least as thick as the thickness of the wall 16 of roller 2 so that the clip may be pushed completely over the roller, with bend 14 against wall 16 thereof so that the spring means (arms 8 and 11 and loop 10) is disposed entirely within the roller and the rearwardly end of arm 7 is co-extensive with roller 2. Thus the roller wall 16 is received fully in slot 17, formed between arms 7 and 8, and extends rearwardly, rightwardly as viewed, to the end of the clip.

Arms 7 and 13 are preferably bifurcated as best seen in FIGURE 2, in order to reduce and eliminate unnecessary bulk in the clip.

Further, in order to provide improved and more efiicient spring action, loop 10 is preferably of diameter greater than the distance between the arms 8 and 11 immediately adjacent thereto and arm 13 bears upon loop 10, as at B. This provides better, more efficient spring action ensuring good return of the clip to the closed position after it is opened and good gripping of the hair and roller.

Clip 4 is preferably formed of aluminum 7075-T6 which is impervious to the solutions and chemicals normally used in the hair dressing art and has the further advantage that it can be anodized and colored easily.

Thus the invention provides both a new and improved, one piece lever actuated, spring action hair clip and a new combination of a spring action hair clip and hair roller wherein the clip does not extend longitudinally from the roller and does not materially increase the bulk thereof so that the rollers may be placed more closely together on the wearers head. This provides for more and closer curls since the curls can be rolled and formed immediately adjacent each other and clipped into position, without the clip from a rolled curl interfering in the rolling and positioning of the next curl.

Modifications, changes andimprovements to the above described and illustrated preferred form and embodiment of this invention may occur to those skilled in the art who come to understand the principles and precepts thereof, without departing from the spirit and substance of the invention. Accordingly, the patent issued hereon should not be limited in scope to the form and embodiment of the invention herein particularly illustrated and 42- described but by the advance by which the invention has promoted the art I claim:

1. In the combination a hair roller and hair clip wherein said hair roller comprises a hollow, cylindrical tubular member having a lateral wall of predetermined thickness, the improvement that said clip comprises a single, integral member having first and second gripping arms engaging on the respective sides of said wall, said first gripping arm being disposed exteriorly of said roller and extending longitudinally along and parallel therewith, said second gripping arm being disposed interiorly of said roller and having one portion engaging and extending parallel and longitudinally with said wall and a second portion extending angularly away from said wall and said first gripping arm, a reentrant arm portion extending from one end of said first gripping arm into said roller and being spaced from said first gripping arm a suificient distance to receive said wall between said first gripping arm and said reentrant arm portion and against the juncture thereof, an arcuate loop portion at the end of said reentrant arm portion remote from the juncture with said first gripping arm, and a lever arm portion extending from said loop portion to said second gripping arm remote from said one portion thereof, said reentrant arm, loop and lever arm portions comprising spring means biasing said one portion of said second gripping arm toward said first gripping arm and into engagement with said wall and being disposed with said second portion of said second gripping arm within said roller, pressure on said second portion of said second gripping arm and said first gripping arm opposing said spring means to open said clip.

2. The combination according to claim 1 in which said arcuate loop portion is of greater diameter than the distance between said reentrant and lever arm portions immediately adjacent thereto.

3. The combination according to claim 2 in which said second portion of said second gripping arm engages against a part of said arcuate loop portion.

Claims

1. IN THE COMBINATION A HAIR ROLLER AND HAIR CLIP WHEREIN SAID HAIR ROLLER COMPRISES A HOLLOW, CYLINDRICAL TUBULAR MEMBER HAVING A LATERAL WALL OF PERDETERMINED THICKNESS, THE IMPROVEMENT THAT SAID CLIP COMPRISES A SINGLE, INTEGRAL MEMBER HAVING FIRST AND SECOND GRIPPING ARMS ENGAGING ON THE RESPECTIVE SIDES OF SAID WALL, SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM BEING DISPOSED EXTERIORLY OF SAID ROLLER AND EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY ALONG AND PARALLEL THEREWITH, SAID SECOND GRIPPING ARM BEING DISPOSED INTERIORLY OF SAID ROLLER AND HAVING ONE PORTION ENGAGING AND EXTENDING PARALLEL AND LONGITUDINALLY WITH SAID WALL AND A SECOND PORTION EXTENDING ANGULARLY AWAY FROM SAID WALL AND SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM, A REENTRANT ARM PORTION EXTENDING FROM ONE END OF SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM INTO SAID ROLLER AND BEING SPACED FROM SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM A SUFFICIENT DISTANCE TO RECEIVE SAID WALL BETWEEN SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM AND SAID REENTRANT ARM PORTION AND AGAINST THE JUNCTURE THEREOF, AN ARCUATE LOOP PORTION AT THE END OF SAID REENTRANT ARM PORTION REMOTE FROM THE JUNCTURE WITH SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM, AND A LEVER ARM PORTION EXTENDING FROM SAID LOOP PORTION TO SAID SECOND GRIPPING ARM REMOTE FROM SAID ONE PORTION THEREOF, SAID REENTRANT ARM, LOOP AND LEVER ARM PORTIONS COMPRISING SPRING MEANS BIASING SAID ONE PORTION OF SAID SECOND GRIPPING ARM TOWARD SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM AND INTO ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID WALL AND BEING DISPOSED WITH SAID SECOND PORTION OF SAID SECOND GRIPPING ARM WITHIN SAID ROLLER, PRESSURE ON SAID SECOND PORTION OF SAID GRIPPING ARM AND SAID FIRST GRIPPING ARM OPPOSING SAID SPRING MEANS TO OPEN SAID CLIP.
