No. 548,897 3 Claims. (Cl. 3034) This invention relates to audible and visual indicating means for adjustable safety razors.
The invention has particular reference to safety razors of the type that adjustably clamp the blade Within a cutting head and with the adjustable means embodying rotary sleeves that are provided upon their outer sides with fixed jewels, to indicate the degree of clamping action of the razor blade and also, to rotate a plurality of sounding reeds against a plucker and with jewels being arranged in accordance with each of the reeds.
The invention contemplates the use of such a means for razors of the Schick" adjustable single edge razor blade and alsothe Gillette double edge blade safety razor.
Novel features of construction and operation of the device will be more clearly apparent during the course of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein has been illustrated a preferred form of the device and wherein like characters of reference are employed to denote like parts throughout the several figures.

FIGURE 5 is a transverse section taken substantially on line 5-5 of FIGURE 4, and
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view similar to FIGURE 5 but with the vitalizing features of the invention being spread out in flat form.
Referring specifically to the drawings and particularly to FIGURES l-3 inclusive, the single edge blade holder is provided with a handle 5 and a clamping head 6. The head 6 receives a single edge blade 7,. and clamped therein by a clamp 8, movable to clamping position by a cam 9, bearing against a leg 10 of the clamp 8. The cam 9 is rotatable by tapered knurled knob 11 in a conventional manner.
Fitted over the knurled handle 11 and cemented thereto is a cup-shaped member 12, molded of suitable plastic or the like and carrying a centrally disposed eccentric 13. The eccentric 13 is circumferentially grooved, as shown at 14 and molded into the eccentric, are a multiplicity of equidistantly spaced reeds 15 and a cylindrical cup 16 is cemented to the face of the cam 13 and overlies the several reeds 15. The cup 16 carries a pair of locating pins 17 that have fitment into recesses 18 of the cam and, when cemented together, functions to prevent displacement of the cup 16 during its rotary motion. The face of the cup 16 is provided with a plurality of jewels 19 that are in direct alignment with the reeds 15 and serve to determine the degree of rotation of the knob 11 for actuating the clamp 8.
Adapted to be fixed to the upper portion of the handle 5, is a band 20, that may be clipped thereto and the band 20 is provided with an upstanding tongue 21, that extends into the cup 16 and consitutes a plucker for the several reeds 15.
In the use of this form of is inserted beneath the head 6 and clamped into position by the clamp 8. It is a known fact, that the greater the clamping action upon the blade, the blade is angled to a desired cutting degree of its edge and the degree of clamping action is determined by the rotation of the cup 16, carrying with it the several reeds and, as they travel over the plucker 22, produce a musical note and the hand 20 may be provided with a marker to indicate the position of the particular jewel and to determine the clamping degree of the blade 7. As the cup is rotated manually, it carries with it the head 11 to thereby rotate the cam 9 that bears against the arm 10 of the clamp.
Referring now to FIGURES 4-6, there has been illustrated a conventional double edge blade holder, having an adjustable rotary head or handle 23, provided with an enlarged collar 24 and a reduced shaft extension 25.
Adapted to be fitted upon the shaft extension 25, is a spring clip 26 and the spring clip is preferably cemented to the extension 25. The clip 26 carries a laterally extending pick or plucker 27. Adapted to have fitment over the collar 24, to be cemented thereto is a sleeve 28, having an inner concentric sleeve 29 of substantially the same diameter as the collar 24. The spacing of the sleeves 28 and 29 provides a circumferential groove 30 and the bottom of the groove is formed of stepped sections 31 and molded into each of the steps 31, are upstanding reeds 32. The reeds 32 are rotatable with the sleeves 28 and 29 and the pick or plucker 27 is adapted to engage the upper terminal ends of the reeds 32 as the knob 23 is rotated for adjusting the clamping action upon the blade, causing the reeds to produce a musical note and fixed upon the outer side of the cup 28 and in alignment with the several reeds 32, are jewels 33, giving a visual indication of the particular position of the particular clamping of the blade.
In the use of this form of the invention, the clamping head, opened by rotating the handle 23, causing the sleeves 28 and 29 to also rotate and contact the several reeds 32. With the blade in position, the handle is rotated in opposite direction causing the clamp to move to clamping position with respect to the blade and, as the sleeves 28 and 29 rotate with a collar 24, the movement of the reeds pass the plucker 27 causes the several musical notes.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown, but that changes are contemplated as readily fall within the spirit of the invention as shall be determined by the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In a safety razor blade holder, comprising a handle and a blade receiving head, clamping means for the blade whereby to cause the blade to be angled in its clamping relation to the head, rotatable means for shifting the clamping of the razor blade holder, flexible reeds caried by the rotatable means, a pluck extending into the line of movement of the reeds, whereby to produce a musical note as the clamping means is actuated and jewels fixed to the outer sides of the rotatable means and in alignment with each of the reeds whereby to produce a visible and audible note as the clamping means is rotated.
2. The structure according to claim 1 wherein the razor is provided with a handle that supports a clamp at its upper end for clamping a single edge razor blade, a serrated knob extending from one side of the clamping head and to actuate a lever that varies the degree of pressure upon the blade, a cup secured to the serrations of the knob by a bonding cement, the cup being concentric to the knob and having a hub portion that is the invention, the blade grooved to receive a plurality of flexible reeds, a cylindrical cup being bonded to the outer side of the hub and with the last named cup being provided with a plurality of jewels that are in alignment with the several reeds, a clamping band upon the upper portion of the handle that is provided with a laterally extending arm that constitutes a pluck and with the arm being in alignment with the several reeds whereby the cup when rotated to vary the clamp, will emit a musical note as it passes over the terminal ends of the several reeds, the arm being formed integral with the band and extending into the cup for its major depth, the rotation of the second named cup causing the reeds to pass over the pluck and to also rotate the knob for varying the clamping action upon the blade.

A safety razor blade holder for clamping engagement with a double edge razor, having a handle and a collar fixed to the handle whereby to actuate the clamping head of the razor for varying the pressure thereon and the angle of the cutting edges, a sleeve cemented to the collar and with the sleeve having an inner and outer wall and with the wall being cylindrical and forming a groove at its bottom, the groove being circumferentially stepped and with the steps having flexible reeds molded therein and being vertically arranged, a second collar fixed to the handle at a point beneath the blade holder and with the last named collar being provided with a laterally extending pluck that overrides the upper ends of the reeds and whereby to emit a musical note as the razor head is adjusted with respect to its clamping action upon the blades, the last named collar and the sleeves being bonded to the first named collar by a bonding cement, the outer wall of the first named sleeves being provided with fixed jewels that are in alignment with-the several reeds and whereby the adjustment of the clamping action of the blade holder will cause the pluck to progressively engage the reeds to produce a musical note and to also determine the degree of clamping action by the jewels.

Claims (1)
1. IN A SAFETY RAZOR BLADE HOLDER, COMPRISING A HANDLE AND A BLADE RECEIVING HEAD, CLAMPING MEANS FOR THE BLADE WHEREBY TO CAUSE THE BLADE TO BE ANGLED IN ITS CLAMPING RELATION TO THE HEAD, ROTATABLE MEANS FOR SHIFTING THE CLAMPING OF THE RAZOR BLADE HOLDER, FLEXIBLE REEDS CARRIED BY THE ROTATABLE MEANS, A PLUCK EXTENDING INTO THE LINE OF MOVEMENT OF THE REEDS, WHEREBY TO PRODUCE A MUSICAL NOTE AS THE CLAMPING MEANS IS ACTUATED AND JEWELS FIXED TO THE OUTER SIDES OF THE ROTATABLE MEANS AND IN ALIGNMENT WITH EACH OF THE REEDS WHEREBY TO PRODUCE A VISIBLE AND AUDIBLE NOTE AS THE CLAMPING MEANS IS ROTATED.
