UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL It. JONES, OF WINCHESTER, INDIANA.
HORSE-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,415, dated December 29, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEMUEL R. JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVinchester, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specification, reference beiughad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in portable horse-powers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and. particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
A represents a truck composed of the platform B and the front and rear axles, G and D, respectively, on which are mounted wheels E. Secured firmly to the center of the platform is a vertical spindle, F, the upper portion of which is reduced, as shown in Fig. 2.
G represents a master-wheel consisting of the horizontal rim 9, having spur-teeth on its upper side, and depending inwardlybent arms g, connected at their inner ends to a hub, 9 that is journaled on the vertical spindle. A sweep-lever, H, is attached to the master-wheel to rotate the latter.
To the upper end of the spindle F is bolted an inverted-U-shaped frame, I, in the arms of which is journaled a transverse horizontal shaft, K, one end of which projects outwardly beyond the said frame. To the outer end of this shaft is fixed a spur-pinion, L, that meshes with the toothed master-wheel, and on that portion of the shaft between the arms of the frame is secured a driving-pulley, M.
N represents a vertical standard that is attached to the center of the arch of the frame I. The upper end of the standard is bifurcated to form arms a, in which is journaled a horizontal shaft, 0, having a pulley, P, fixed to its center, and pulleys R S attached to its ends. The pulley P is connected to the driving-pulley M by an endless belt, T, and the pulleys R and S are for the attachment of belts to operate the machinery to which it may be desired to attach the horsepower. The horse is attached to the sweep-lever in the usual way, and travels in a circle to actuate thevhorsepower mechanism. The vertical standard carrying the driving-pulleys R and S raises the driving-belts attached to the said pulleys above the horse, so that he may pass under them unimpeded. Hooks V, having downturned sharpened ends to be driven into the floor of thebarn or building, are attached to the trucks, for the purpose of securing the latter when the machine is in operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the fixed spindle, the master-wheel rotating thereon. and the frame attached to the spindle and carrying a shaft having a pinion meshing with the masterwheel and a driving-pulley, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the fixed spindle, the master-wheel rotating thereon, the frame attached to the spindle and carrying a shaft having a pinion meshing with the master-wheel and a driving-pulley, and the vertical standard attached to the frame and carrying ashaft having pulleys, one of which is connected to and actuated by the driving-pulley, substantially as described.
3. The horse-power mounted on a portable truck, the latter being provided with the attached hooks having the downturned pointed ends, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
4. In a horse-power, the combination of the fixed spindle and the master-wheel having the open rim, the depending inwardly-bent arms, and the hub to which the inner ends of the arms are attached, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
LEMUEL B. JONES.
