GABLE GRIP.
Patented Dec. 29, 1885;
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS. S
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFrcE.
LEWIS B. XVIIITE, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO LEON ABBETT, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CABLE-GRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 333,374, dated December 29, 1885.
Application filed October 1, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Lnwrs B. Warns, of the city, county, and State of N ewYork, have invented a new and Improved Gable-Grip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cable-grip, operated by compressed air, for rapidly gripping and securely holding the cables of the cable-railways.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of my improved cable-grip. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The cylinder A contains the piston 13, provided with the piston-rod G, projecting through a suitable neck in the bottom of the cylinder, and on the lower end of the pistonrod the block D is held detachably by a pin.
Tothe bloc-k D the two levers hare pivoted opposite each other, and the upper ends of the levers E are connected by the pivoted rods F with the under side of the cylinder A, thus forming toggle-levers.
On the lower ends of the levers E the gripping-jaws G are secured opposite each other, and are made of copper or some other material softer than the cableH between them, the inner sides of the jaws being made concave, so as to fit the cable as much as possible. Bolts J are passed through the levers E below the jaws G, and on the said bolts the rollers K are loosely mounted and held at the middle of the bolts by the spiral springs L, surrounding the bolts at the sides of the rollers K. The surfaces of the rollers are made concave, as shown, so as to fit the cable H above it as much as possible.
To shunt the cars and transfer the grip to other cables, the bolts J are withdrawn, the other cable passed on the rollers K, and the bolts are replaced, so as to keep the cable raised so that the jaws can-grip it. Guide- Serial No. 178,708. (No model.)
rollersM are pivoted onjaws or lugs N on the outer edges of the. levers E, and said rollers prevent the grip from swaying in the cabletrough, as said rollers run on the inner sides of the trough. A plate or bar, 0, is secured to the top of the cylinder A, and projects upward, and is provided on its upper end with an eye, 0, which is passed between two jaws, P, on the under side of the car 1?, and through the jaws l? and the eye 0 a bolt, R, is passed, and thus the grip is mounted to swing on the under side of the car. A pipe, T, arranged in any suitable manner, is connected with the lower end of the cylinder and 65 with a receptacle for compressed air on the car.
The operation is as follows: To grip the cable, compressed air is admitted into the lower part of the cylinder, and thereby the piston is forced upward and the jaws are pressed against the cable, which is gripped firmly.
To release the cable, the compressed air is permitted to, escape from the cylinder, when the piston descends under the action of its own weight and the jaws separate.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction of the grip herein shown, as the same can be constructed in a different manner without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with cablegrip levers having gripping-jaws, of a vertically-movable rod, on the end of which the levers are pivoted, and of bars connecting the levers with a fixed object, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A cable-grip provided with jaws for gripping the cable and a pneumatic cylinder for operating both jaws, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a cable-grip provided with two jaws adapted to grip and hold the cable, of a single pneumatic cylinder for operating said grip, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with a cylinder, of cable-grip levers connected with the same, a
piston in the cylinder, apiston-rod connected with the piston, and a block connected with the lower end of the piston-rod, on which block thegrip-levers are pivoted, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a. cylinder, piston, and piston-rod, of cable-grip levers connected with the cylinder and the piston-rod, a bolt passed throi'igh the lower ends of the levers, and of a. roller on the said bolt, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The combination, with a cylinder, piston, and piston-rod, of grippingdevers connected with the cylinder and the lower end of the piston-rod, and ofgnide-rollers on the gripping-levers, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. The combination, with a car, of a cylininder hung on the under side of the same, a piston in the cylinder, :1. piston-rod on the piston, and cable-gripping levers connected shown and described.
the bar or plate 0, secured on the top of the cylinder, and of a bolt for pivoting the bar or plate to the under side of a car, substantially as herein shown and described.
9. The combination, with the cylinder A, piston B, and lhe piston-rod O, of cable-gripping levers connected with the cylinder 'and with the piston-rod, the v bolts gJ, passed through the lower ends of the gripping-levers, the rollers K on the bolts, and of the spiral springs L on the bolts, substantially as herein LEWIS B.' WHITE. \Vitnesses:
