FOLDING CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,273, dated December 29, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP P. AOHENBACH,

a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Reclining and Folding Rocking-Chairs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly broken away, of a combined reclining and folding rocking-chair embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a portion thereof in line as m, Fig. 1, enlarged.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

My invention consists of a rocking-chair which is both reclining and folding in its nature, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the seat of a rocking chair, and B B the cross-legs; C, the side pieces of the back, and D the rockers thereof. The seat is made of a piece of fabric attached to the rounds-one 'at the front of the legs B, and the other at the top of the side pieces of the back, said side pieces being continuous of the legs B. The lower ends of the legs B are pivoted to the rear end of the rockers D, and the lower ends of the legs B have secured to them straps E, which freely embrace the sides of the rockers and are connected by pins E, which pass through longitudinally-extending slots at in said rockers, it being noticed that the lower walls of said slot are recessed at intervals, as at b, the recesses being adapted to receive the pins F. If desired, the sides of the rockers may have secured to them castings with slots and recesses similar to the slots and recesses a b, the same being shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, and serving to increase the strength of the rockers, which, as is evident, are also slotted to receive the pins F. Pivoted to the front of the rockers are arms G, having in front a board or round, 0, forming a foot-rest, and in order to sustain said arms there are pivoted to them arms H,

whose upper ends are pivoted to the front ends of the cross-legs B.

It will be seen that when the parts are in position shown in Fig. l a comfortable rocking-chair is provided, the same having a foot-rest, the pins F entering coincident recesses 1), whereby the legs B are prevented from shifting, it also being noticed that thestraps E prevent lateral disconnection of the legs B and rockers, and that when the chair is carried the separation of the rockers D and legs B is prevented by said pins and straps. As the straps E brace the legs B, preventing them from moving laterally, said legs as braced also serve to brace the legs B, and also the arms H and G of the foot-rest.

The chair may be made to have more or less inclination, as in recliningchairs, by raising the legs B, whereby the pins F clear the recesses b, which they occupied, and then moving said legs forward or backward, the pins then sliding in the slots at until the required inclination or adjustment is attained, when the legs B are caused or permitted to lower and the pins drop into the respective recesses b. In these movements the other parts of the chair change their angles, and thus effect the desired change.

The chair may be folded by moving the legs B to the front of the rockers, thus lowering the parts above the rockers and placing them in more compact condition for handling, transportation, and storing.

I am aware that it is not new to construct a folding and reclining rocking-chair, and adapted to enter recesses in slots in the rockers. Neither is itnew to have a foot-rest pivotally secured to the leg of a chair, and such I do not broadly claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The legs, back, and seat, in combination with rockers having slots with recesses in the lower walls thereof, and pins and straps attached to they legs, the straps freely embracing the rockers, and the pins connected with the straps and passing through the slots of the rockers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The legs, back, and seat, in combination with rockers having slots with recesses in 5 their lower walls, straps E, attached to the legs B, embracing the rockers, pins F, conl neeted with the straps passing through the slots of the rockers, arms G, pivoted to the i rockers provided with rounds c, and arms H,

pivoted to the legs B, said parts being ar- 10 ranged and operating substantially as described.
