CLAMP FOR FISHING-REELS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,232, dated December 29, 1885.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN KOPF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Fishing-Reels, of which the following is a specification.

Ordinarily fishing-reels are provided with a base-piece of considerable length extending in a direction lengthwise of the rod and curved to fit the rod, and such reels are secured to the rod by means of sliding bands, which may be slipped along the rod to overlap the ends of the base-piece, or to free the basepiece from the rod.

The object of my invention is to provide a clamp whereby the reel may be securely fixed in a position on the rod without the employment of sliding bands, or which may be provided in addition to the sliding band, thus enabling one or the other to be used for securing the reel on the rod, as may be desired.

The invention consists in a clamp of novel construction, hereinafter described, and in the combination of such clamp with a reel.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a transverse section of a rod and a face view of a reel secured thereon by means of my improved clamp, portions of said clamp being broken away, to show more clearly the way in which the sections are connected with the reel 5 and Fig. 2 represents a side view of the clamp and reel, the reel being broken away at the junction of its heads or side pieces with its base-piece,so as to more clearly show the way in which the clamp-sections are connected with the reel.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.

A designates the rod. B B designate the two heads or cheek-pieces of the reel, and B designates the base-piece which fits the side of the rod.

The reel which I have chosen to illustrate my invention is made according to the method described and claimed in my United States Letters Patent No. 309,305, dated December 16, 1884. The clamp is composed of two corresponding sections, 0 O, which are curved to a circular form to fit the rod, and have at their upper ends loops 0, which embrace the necks 6 between the heads and base portion B B of the reel. As here shown, these loops 0 are divided or formed with gaps or open ends 0*, and at the opposite ends of the sections are downwardly-projecting ears 0, through which is inserted a clamping-screw, D. This screw is provided with a head or shoulder, 11, and is inserted loosely through one ear 0 and tapped into the other car, so that by tightening said screw the two clampsections 0 C may be bound firmly upon the rod. 7

As hcre shown, the base portion 13 of the reel is of a considerable length, andif it be not desired to use the clamp for attaching it to the rod the reel may be secured to a rod in the usual way by sliding bands which are capable of being slipped over the ends of the basepiece B. I

The gaps or openings 0* provide for readily attaching the clamp-sections to or detaching them from the reel, for when the clamp-section G is turned into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. v2, it may be readily slipped off the neck 1) between the head and base portion B B of the reel.
