VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,877, dated December 22, 1885:
Application filed June 10, 1885. Serial No. 168,278.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS H. GAIN, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Vehicle-Spring, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved vehicle-spring.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of a vehicle provided with my improved center brace-spring. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the clip for holding the end of the spring Fig. 5 is a detail perspectiveview of the hookclip for holding the end of a cross-spring.
The wagon box or body A is supported by means of springs, to be described hereinafter, from the front and rear axles, B and G. On the center of the front axle, B, a head-block, l), is pivoted, which is connected with the rear axle by perches or bars F. A spring, G, having the scroll-curves G on the ends, is placed upon the head-block D, and held on the same by the clips H, which also hold the front ends of the perches or bars F to the head-block, the bottom cross-piece and nuts of the clips being in recesses in the bottom edges of the head-block. At each corner of the box A an angle-piece, J, is secured to the under side of the 'box, and each angle-piece is provided with a U -shaped hook, K, projecting from the front or rear end of the box or body and upwardthat is, in such a manner that the opening will be downward. In each hook a bolt,'L, is held parallel with the length of the body, and on the said bolts the ends of the springs G are secured. The end springs, G, are curved over the top of the angle-pieces and around the out- (No model.)
side, and are then curved inward and upward and connected with the bolts L in the hookclip K. The corners of the body or box are thus supported from the head-block D. 0nv
springs N extend beneath the under side of 55 the strip to the end of the box, and the outer ends, N, of the said springs are curved and fastened to bolts 0, held on the ends of inwardly and upwardly projecting prongs P, formed on shackles Q, resting upon the end springs, G, and the head-blockD and the rear axle, and held on the head-block by the clips and the king-bolt and on the rear axle by clips. The shackles Q have upwardly-pro ecting end flanges, Q, against which the clips rest, and lugs R on the outer edges, which'lugs are bent down on the outer edges of the springs G. The center of the box or body is thus supported from the front and rear axle. The vehicle rides very easily and gently, as the several springs co-operate. No sidebars, side springs, or springbars are required. The weight is taken up entirely by the end and brace springs in the most perfect manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new,.and desire to secure by Letters Patent A spring mechanism for vehicles, comprising the two central longitudinal brace-springs, N N, secured to the under side of the vehiclebody at their inner ends and pivotally connected to the axles at their outer ends, and the upward and outward curved end springs secured rigidly at their central portions to the axles and pivotally connected at their outer ends to the four corners of the vehicle-body, substantially as set forth.
