D. B. WATTS.
PRINTERS GALLBY.
Patented Dec. 15, 1885.
Snow m,
5 my anw a/ z vitueoo UNITED STATES ATENT Erica.
DANIEL B. \VATTS, OF MONTROSE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE W. DUNN, OF SAME PLACE.
PRINTERS GALLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,686, dated December 15,1885.
Application filed April 20, 18F5. Serial No. 162,772. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL B. WATTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montrose, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Printers Galleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificaion, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved printers galley. Fig. 2isalongitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 00 m in Fig. 2.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to printers galleys; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior ad vantages in point ofsimplicity, durability, and
gene] a1 efliciency.
\Vith these endsin view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly 3o pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the body of my improved galley, which consists of a rectangular casing composed of the bottom B, sides 00, and end D. The end 5 D, which may be designated as the upper end of the galley, is provided with a transverse or horizontal slot, E, adapted to receive the lug F at the upper end of the slide G. the lower end of which is provided at its lower edge with a catch, H, adapted to takeover the lower end of the bottom Bof the galley, which is formed with a recess or shoulder, I, for the reception of the said catch H. It will thus be seen that the slide G is at liberty to move transversely in the galley, so as to hold and compress matter contained in the latter. The
slide G is provided with laterally-extending studs J J, having screw-threaded perforations K for the admission of the inner ends of thumb-screws L L, which are seated in ver- 5o tical recesses in the side 0 of the galley and provided with collars, M, which, while they admit of the said thumb-screws being revolved for the lateral adjustment of the slide G,will prevent the lateral displacement of the said thumbscrews. It will be seen that by turning the latter the slide G may be moved in either an inward or an outward direction 111 the galley, thus compressing or releasing mat ter contained therein, as the case may require.
It will be seen that when the adjustingserews become worn or broken they can be readily removed by turning them in a reverse direction until their lower ends are freed from the bosses J,when they can be readily slipped out of the recess or slot in which each is seated, as will be readily understood, and replaced by a new adjusting-screw, or repaired before being replaced.
I am aware that printers galleys have been heretofore constructed comprising a rectangular box or casing and a movable slide adapted to be adjusted in the said casing by means of suitably-arranged setscrews, and I do not there fore claim such construction, broadly; but
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is
As an improvement in printers galleys. the combination, with the box or casing having one of its sides formed with the recesses or slots, of the adjustable slide formed with the laterally extending bosses provided with screw-threaded apertures, and the removable adjusting screws seated in the said recesses or slots in the side of the casing and provided each with the two collars adapted to prevent their lateral motion, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as go my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL B. \VATTS.
W'itnesses:
H. S. MARVIN, J. H. VIOKARS.
