(Cl. 297-353) This invention relates to a chair construction, and more particularly toa chair back rest.
It is an object of this invention to provide a vertically adjustable back rest for a chair, which can be easily manipulated for disposing the back rest in the desired position of adjustment, which will provide for tilting movement of the back rest, and which will be of attractive ap pearance.
In accordance with one form of the invention, there is provided a chair having a seat supported on a suitable ground-engaging base. A back support extends upwardly above the seat at the rear thereof for supporting a back rest in an elevated position above the seat. A hinge plate is mounted on the back rest and is swingably connected to a mounting plate. A cover plate is connected to the mounting plate and extends therearound with the upper end of the back support interposed between said mounting plate and cover. Said mounting plate has a spring mounted thereon provided with a pin selectively receivable in one of a plurality of vertically spaced openings in the upper end of the back support for selectively mounting the back rest in the desired position of adjustment on the back support.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the more detailed description which follows and from the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a chair construction embodying the invention;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the back rest shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a rear view of the back rest shown in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 44 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
As shown in the drawings, a seat is mounted on any suitable ground-engaging base 12 for supporting said seat in an elevated position above the ground. A generally L shaped back support 14 is connected at its lower end to the seat 10 or base 12 and projects upwardly from the rear of said seat. For reasons that will become more apparent hereinafter, a plurality of vertically spaced openings 15 are formed in the upper end of the back sup port 14.
The back support is adapted to carry a back rest 18 conveniently formed from a wooden panel 19 having a cushioned covering 20 extending thereover. As shown, a hinge plate 22 comprising a rearwardly open channel having a web 23 interconnecting a pair of rearwardly projecting legs 24is connected to the rear face of the back rest. Screws 25 extend through the web 23 and are received in tapped staples 26 for fixedly mounting the plate 22 in a laterally centered position on the rear face of the back rest.
A mounting plate 27 in the form of an elongated forwardly open channel is swingably connected to the hinge plate 22 by a pivot pin 28. Said mounting plate comprises a web 30 receivable against the forwardly presented face of the back support 14 and interconnecting a pair of forwardly projecting legs 32. As shown in FIG. 5, the legs 32 overlie the legs 24, and the hinge pin 28 extends through the legs 24 and 32 for thus swingably interconnecting the plates 22 and 27 on a horizontal axis. A leaf spring 34 is fixedly connected at its upper end, as by rivet 3,326,602 Patented June 20, 1967 35, to the web 30 and extends downwardly from said rivet with its lower end forwardly oiiset to provide a finger 37. The finger 37 is carried in a slot 38 in a forwardly projecting tongue 40 formed on the plate web 30 adjacent the lower end thereof. A rearwardly projecting pin 42 is mounted on the spring 34 above the finger 37 and is movable in opening 43 in the plate web 30 for selective reception in the back support openings 15.
A cover 45 having a web 46 interconnecting a pair of forwardly projecting legs 47 extends over the plates 22 and 27 and is connected to the plate 27 by screws 50 received in the legs 47 and 32. Desirably, the upper end of the web 46 is bent forwardly, as at 52, to extend over the upper ends of the back support 14 and plates 22 and 27.
The cover web 46 is disposed against the rear face of the support 14, and the pin 42 is held in the desired opening 15 by the inherent resiliency of the spring 34 for thus mounting the back rest in the desired position of vertical adjustment on the support 14. If it is desired to adjust the position of the back rest on the support 14, the spring finger 37 is pushed forwardly in the slot 38 to disengage the pin 42 from the opening 15 in which it is received. The plate and cover assembly is then free to be moved vertically on the support 14 until the pin 42 comes into register with the desired opening 15, whereupon it will be urged into said opening by the inherent resiliency of the spring 34. With the cover 45 having an open lower end, the finger 37 will be disposed in a position of access for movement to disengage the pin 42 from the support openings for effecting adjustment of the back rest on said support.
We claim:
1. In a chair construction, a back rest, a mounting plate operatively connected to said back rest, a cover fixedly mounted on said mounting plate, a vertically extending back support having its upper end received between and engaging said mounting plate and cover, and spring means on said mounting plate having a pin biased toward said back support for selective reception in a plurality of vertically spaced openings therein for releasably locking said back rest in the desired position of vertical adjustment on said back support.
2. In a chair construction, a back rest, a hinge plate mounted on said back rest, a mounting plate swingably connected to said hinge plate on a transverse axis, a cover fixedly mounted on said mounting plate, a vertically extending back support having its upper end received between said mounting plate and cover, and a spring mounted on said mounting plate and having a pin biased toward said back support for selective reception in a plurality of vertically spaced openings formed therein for supporting said back rest in the desired position of vertical adjustment on said back support.
3. The invention as set forth in claim 2 in which said mounting plate and cover are in abutting face to face engagement with said back support.
4. The invention as set forth in claim 2 in which said spring has an offset formed at one of its ends movably received in guide means on said mounting plate.
5. In a chair construction, a back rest, first and second opposed interfitting channeled plates each having a web interconnecting a pair of legs, a pin received in said legs and swingably interconnecting said plates, the web of said first plate being connected to said back rest, a channeled cover having a web interconnecting a pair of legs connected to the legs on said second plate, a back support having a plurality of openings formed therein and received between the webs of said second plate and cover for slidably supporting the back rest thereon, and locking means engageable with the openings in said back support for releasably retaining said back rest in the desired position of adjustment on said back support.

Claims (1)
1. IN A CHAIR CONSTRUCTION, A BACK REST, A MOUNTING PLATE OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO SAID BACK REST, A COVER FIXEDLY MOUNTED ON SAID MOUNTING PLATE, VERTICALLY EXTENDING BACK SUPPORT HAVING ITS UPPER END RECEIVED BETWEEN AND ENGAGING SAID MOUNTING PLATE AND COVER, AND SPRING MEANS ON SAID MOUNTING PLATE HAVING A PIN BIASED TOWARD SAID BACK SUPPORT FOR SELECTIVE RECEPTION IN A PLURALITY OF VERTICALLY SPACED OPENINGS THEREIN FOR RELEASABLY LOCKING SAID BACK REST IN THE DESIRED POSITION OF VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT ON SAID BACK SUPPORT.
