BACK Itlilfiil FOR CHAIRS.
Application filed April 18, 1928. Serial No. 270,82?"
lhis invention relates to iniprovements in back rests for chairs and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more par ticularly pointed out in. the appendwl claii'ns.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved back rest for use in con nectioi'i with a single supporting post and which permits of a ready adjustment of the bar-l; rest for the comfort and convenience ol the (arcupant oil the chair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a conr-strnction of this kind which may be made substantially all 0t n'ietal at a relatively low costand which will hold the back rest in the desired adjusted position and against turning on the post but will permit the tipping of the back rest member with respect to its associated parts that said member will readily lit and conform to the back of the occupant.
These objects of the invention as well as others, together with the many advantages thereof will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawing:
Fi 1 is a view in side elevation of a chair provided with. my improved back rest constrnetion.
Fi 2 is a plan view of my improved back rest construction on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the improved back rest construction and to p end of its associated supporting post as taken on the line of Fig. 2
The invention is herein illustrated and will lie-herein described embodied in that type of chair now known as a stenographefls chair but this is to be considered as by way oi illustration only, because as will he apparent, the improved back rest construction may also be embodied in other types of: chairs where its peculiar characteristics makes it of advantage to do so.
ll-eterrin g now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates as a whole the base of the chair, 2 indicates the seat frame and seat thereof which is mounted on the top end of a seat post 3 having a swivelling hearing with respect to said base. 4 indicates the back rest post which in this instance is made of metallic tubing and is operatively connected at its bottom end to the rear side of the seat frame at its middle for a limited fore and aft rocking movement. From the seat frame, said back rest post curves i'ipwardly and then. ilj'orwardly to terminate in avertically disposed top end part which is closed by a plug (3 as best shown in Fig. 3, In said top end post 5 oi. the post at the rear side thereol is yn'ovided a plurality of longitudt nally spaced openings 77.
Associated withthe top'end part 5 o]? the back rest post, a back rest which includes a horizontally dispm-aul, transversely and rezn'wardly curved back rest member 8 to the rear faceoi which is secured a illZl-li bar 9, the ends fl0-fl0 o't whichare bent to form rearwardly extending); cars. 11 indicates a second lint bar which though. spaced rearwardly from (he bar 9 substantially conforms in. ciurvatinre therewith and has its ends l2-l2 bent to form forwardly evt-ending, ears which are pivoted to the ears 1(]--10 of said bar 9 as by rivets iii-13, so that the back rest supported. by said bar 11.
'.l.he mid portion of the supporting bar is formed. to ynrovide a rearwardly opening seat 1st with which coacts a rearwardly extending: yoke or bridge 15 that has ears 'l61(3 lined to the bar 11 at each side oil. the seat 1 .11. In said yoke is fixed in any suitable manner, a filler block 1? which coacts with the seat to provide a recess that receives the top end oi the post 5 with a tliai'rly snug lit. Threaded through the rear portion oi. the yoke and its assoeia ted. tiller block 16 is a screw 18 and the inner end. of said screw tapered. to enter any one of the openings 7 in the post while the other end has a hand wheel. 19 by which the screw may be threziulcd or turned in either direction.
i i hen the back rest has been adjusted to the proper height on the post end, the screw is turned to enter the desired opening 7 in the post whereby the back rest is hold in its adjusted position and against twisting or turn :ing on. the post. ll hen. the back rest has thus been :ldjusted and a person occupies the chair, the back rest 8 will pivot on the rivets lb to conform with the back of the occupant.
'lhe yoke and tiller block crmstruction gives the proper length oil screw threaded bearing for the screw by which the beveled end there ot may be securely turned into that opening; 7 in the post end 5 in line therewith so that said screw cannot accidentally loosen up to that extent which will permit the back rest to drop downwardly on the post.
The construction described, comprises but 1 ill wish to be limited thereto except as may be pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a back rest post, a back rest member, a supporting member therefor, a yoke carried thereby and coacting with a part of said supporting member to surround said post, a block carried by the yoke and a screw, threaded through said block to engage the post to lock said supporting member thereto.
2. In combination with a back rest post, a back rest member, a supporting member therefor having a depressed portion therein to receive said post, a yoke iixed to said supporting member and bridging said depressed portion, a block fixed in said yoke and a screw threaded into said block to engage said post to lock the supporting member thereto.
3. In combination with a back rest post having a plurality o't longitudinally spaced openings therein, a back rest member, a supportin member therefor having a depressed portion therein to receive said post, a yoke fixed to said SHPPOIIIIIQ; member and bridging said depressed portion, a bloek fixed in said yoke and a screw threaded in said bloek to engage in the desired opening to lock the supporting member to said post.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 15th day oi. March, 1928.
IVILLIAM S. FERRIS.
