RACK OR HOLDER FOR MUSIC AND BOOKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332.647, dated December 15, 1885.

Application filed September 15, 1885. Serial No. 177,133.

Be it known that I, BAPTIST DREHER, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backs or Holders for Music, Books, 8m; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in racks or holders for music, books, 820., and wh'le I shall describe it in this specification as constructed and especially adapted for use with upright pianos and organs, it will be apparent that the invention, without any material modification, may be also adapted for use in connection with desks and tables.

My invention consists in the following described mechanism and arrangement whereby a panel or rack, while not in use, may have the appearance of a panel integral with the piano or organ, and when needed for use may be conveniently drawn or moved into proper position to receive and hold the music.

In the drawings, Figure l is an isometric view showing my rack in its closed or unused position. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same in its open position. Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of my device when closed. Fig. 4 is a view in rear elevation of the same when open.

B may be either an independent frame for the panel A or it may constitute a portion of the general frame-work of the piano or organ.

To the upper and rear portion of the panel A are attached one, two, or more hinged or swinging guide-blocks, O, which move or slide upon guides D.

E is a bar or stop, of any suitable material and construction, for arresting the downward movement of the blocks 0, and consequently limits the opening extent of the panel A.

F is any suitable latching device, which I prefer to be of a character that will lightly hold the panel in its closed position, but which will readily yield to permit the panel to open (No model.)

when the panel is gently pulled from the outside.

G G are links connecting the panel A with its frame B in substantially the manner shown, so that when the panel is dropped to its operative position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, said panel will be given its oblique or slanting position shown, suitable for receiving and holding a. book or sheet of music. This oblique or slanting position of the panel is effected by the joint action of the links G and the vertically-moving hingedor swinging blocks O.

The frame B in the rear of the panel A may, if desired, be covered over with wood, cloth, or any suitable screening material, so that when the panel is dropped to its slanting position the interior will not be exposed through the opening above the panel A.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower portion of the panel A is provided with a ledge or shelf, A, which may be hinged or station ary, upon which the book or music rests. This shelf A, however, instead of being attached to the panel A, may have its equivalent in an arresting cleat or ridge in the piano or organ frame, so placed that the book or music, while being supported by the inclined panel, shall rest upon the organ or piano and beheld from sliding down by the said cleat or ridge upon the instrument proper. By such an arrangement the outside of the panel A, relieved from the shelf A, may in some cases be made to present a more ornamental appearance.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is The combination, with a frame, the vertical rods secured to the frame, and the links pivoted to the frame below the rods, of the blocks mounted on the rods and adapted to slide thereon, and the panel hinged at its upper edge to said blocks and pivotally secured at its opposite sides near its lower edge to the outer ends of the links, all of the above parts combined and operating substantially as set forth.
