(EASTER. No. 332,629. Patented Dec. 15, 1,885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
WELLS VAN VALKENBERGH, OF ONEIDA, AND DANIEL E. TEAL, OF ONEIDA CASTLE, NEW YORK.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,629, dated December 15 1885.
Application filed February 19, 1885. Serial No. 156,389. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WELLS VAN VALKEN- BERGH, of Oneida, in the county of Madison, and in the State of New York, and DANIEL E.
TEAL, of Oneida Castle, Oneida county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the parts of our caster separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a like View of the same as combined and attached to the leg of a table, and Fig. 3 is a 1 vertical central section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Our invention relates to the vertical adjustment of a caster with relation to the artiole to which it is attached, and has for its object the securing of such adjustment in a strong, durable, and inexpensive manner; to which end said invention consists, principally, in a caster composed in part of a pintle that 2 5 is provided at its lower end with a head, above which may be j ournaled the frame or yoke of the roller, and has its body above said yoke threaded,to adapt it to screw into and be adjustable longitudinally within an article of furniture, in combination with a nut for looking said pintle in position when adjusted, and a an interiorly-threaded washer that is adapted to form the upper bearing for said yoke, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, further, in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the pintle of our caster, which at its lower end is provided with a head, a, and from its upper end nearly to said head has its periphery threaded, as shown. Upon the lower unthreaded portion of the pintle A is journaled 5 a yoke or frame, B, which has any usual form, and has journaled within its forks b a roller, 0. Above said yoke is placed a washer, D, which interiorly is threaded to enable it to fit over the threaded periphery of said pintle,
and is screwed downward thereon until the space between its lower face and the head a is sufficient only to enable said yoke 13 to turn freely, in which position said washer forms the upper bearing for the latter and receives and sustains the weight that is imposed upon the caster. Said washer may be prevented from turning, when adjusted to place, by having its lower face impinge upon a shoulder formed at the lower end of the threaded portion of said pintle, or by any similar means.
In use of our caster the pintle A is to be screwed into the leg E, or other suitable portion of an article of furniture, and when in the desired position is locked in place by means of a nut, F, which is fitted loosely upon the threaded part of said pintle, above the washer D, and is turned upward against said leg E, where it acts as a jam or lock nut. \Vhen it is desired to raise or lower said caster with relation to said leg, in order to level up 7 the article of furniture, said not F is loosened, and said pintle then turned in the right direction to effect the adjustment, after which said parts are locked in placed once more by turning said nut upward, as described.
While the screw-threaded pintle of our caster may be inserted directly within the wooden portion of furniture-legs, we prefer to provide the latter at such point with a metal ferrule or block, G, and have said pintle screw into the same, a more substantial and durable connection being thus secured.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of our invention, what we claim is- 1. A caster composed in part of a pintle that is provided at its lower end with a head, above which may be journaled the frame or yoke of the roller, and has its body above said yoke threaded, to adapt it to screw into and be adjustable longitudinally within an 0 article of furniture, in combination with a nut for locking said pintle in position when adjusted, and an interiorly-threaded washer that is adapted to form the upper bearing for said yoke, substantially as and for the pur- 5 pose shown.
2. The hereinbefore-described caster, com posed of the pintle A,provided with the head a and having a threaded periphery, the yoke we have hereunto set our hands this 12th day B, carrying the roller 0, the washer bearof Eebruary, 1 8 85.
ing D, and thenut F, in combinationjwith 7 y VAN'YALKENBERGH.
the ferrule G on the leg or equivalent part of DANIEL E. TEAL. 5 a piece of furniture, substantially as and for Witnesses: I
the purpose described. M. J OUsIoK,
