Description

G. L. DONOVAN. NAIL DRAWER.
No.` 332,598. 'Patented Deo. 15, 1885.

www
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE L. DONOVAN, OF MERIDEN, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUSTUS C. BURGHOFF AND GEORGE S. VILCOX, BOTH OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
NAIL-DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part'. of Letters Patent No. 332,598, dated December l5, 1885.
Application filed September 3, 1885. Serial No. 176,054.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE L. DONOVAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ail-Drawers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therei n to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to nail-drawers; and it consists chiefly in the addition of a pivoted arm, which is attached to one of the jaws, and operates against the other jaw to open the latter.
It also consists in the combination of the jaws and stem with a handle fast on the latter and a supplemental handle or stock, which has an inwardly-extending pin that enters a longitudinal slot in said stem and 2O prevents said stock or handle from turning,
though allowing longitudinal motion thereof'.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved nail-drawer, the handles being shown in section; and Fig. 2 represents a detail cross-section of the stem or tang.
A designates said stem or tang, with which one of the nail-pulling jaws is formed. This jaw is marked B, the other, which is pivoted 3o thereto, being designated by C. On the inner face of pivoted jaw C a cam or projection, C', is formed. To the other jaw, B, I pivot an arm, D, the inner end of which is formed into a horn, D', arranged in proximity to said cam C. The outer end, d, of said pivoted arm Dis prolonged, to give additional leverage, and arranged so that its lower edge will be above the box or other article or surface into which the nail has been driven when said jaws are 4o touching that surface. The descent of said outer end, d, under the influence of gravity will then cause the horn D' to act against the cam C to open the jaw C. By inclining the implement in lthe direction of this arm D said jaw may be opened still farther. In this way the drawer is easily adapted to nails of different sizes. By rocking it in the opposite direction the jaws are caused to close on the nail, and the latteris drawn out in the usual manner.
E designates a fixed handle or graspingpiece for one hand, which is secured by em- (No model.)
bedded points e or in any other convenient manner to the middle part of stem or tang A.
F designates a long longitudinally-movable 'stock or handle inclosing that part of said stem 55 or tang which is on thejside of handle or grasping-piece E away from the jaws B C. This piece or handle E is in contact with said stock or handle F when the latter is in its inmost position; but the latter handle may be slipped out over the tang or stem A until the two are nearly separated. rl`his of course increases the leverage. The entire separation of the stock or handle F from the tang or stem Ais prevented by a pin or stud, G, which extends from said stock or handle F inward into a longitudinal groove of said stem or tang, this groove terminating before the end of the tang is quite reached. The groove and pin also prevent said stock or handle from turn- 7o ing on said stein or tang.
Having thus described my i1ivention,\vliat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The fixed jaw B, in combination with the jaw C, which is pivoted thereto, and the arm D, pivoted to xed jaw B and arranged to engage jaw C, and open it when said arm is brought in contact with the surface into which the nail has been driven, substantially as set 8o forth.
2. The pivoted jaw C, having projection C', and fixed jaw B, in combination with lever D, having horn D, for opening jaw C by contact with projection C', substantially as set forth.
3. In a nail-drawcr, the combination of a longitudinally-grooved stem or tang, A,'With a longitudinally-movable stock or handle, F, which has a pin or stud, G, extending into said groove, and a supplemental handle or 9o grasping-piece, E, which is fast on said tang, the pivoted jaw C, having projection C, fixed jaw B, and lever D, having horn D', for openingjaw C by contact with projection C, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. DONOVAN.
Vitnesses:
GEORGE TERRY, GEORGE D. SEYMOUR.
