POCKET-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,537, dated December 15, 1885.

Application filed April 20, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. KAHLER, a citizen of the United States of America, reresiding at Wilmington, in the county of Will and State of Illinois,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the knife as it appears when the blade is closed and the knife in a finished state. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the handle of the knife at the side of the blade and blade-spring. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the handle through about its center; and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the handle, spring-bolster, and blade-tang at the place where the pin or rivet passes through for holding the blade in the handle.

This invention relates to certain improvements in pocket-knives, which are designed to be improvements on the pocket-knife for which this applicant filed an application for Letters Patent of the United States on the 12th day of January, A. D. 1885, No. 152,586, which application was, on the 18th day of March, 1885, duly allowed, and which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claim.

Referring to the drawings, D represents the handle of the knife, which is constructed of a single piece of any suitable material, and having a channel, S,for the reception of the knife blade and spring R. The bolsters o are cast on the end or ends of the handle and held thereon by means of the pin P, the ends of which project to some extent into the bolster,

with the blade-channel S. The spi ingR is held Within the channel S by means of the pin F, passing through its front end, and by means of the blade-tang resting on the opposite end. The tang end of the spring terminates in the lug G, to form a bearing for the blade to open against, so as to not injure the bolster. The handle D is intended to be made of a single piece of material, as is shown in cross-section in Figs. 3 and l, and the spring R is intended to lie in the bottom of the channel S, formed in the handle, as shown in Fig. 2, and be held therein, as stated.

I am aware that knife-springs have been used in the bottom of the blade-channel of the handle by laying them in loosely and held entirely by means of the pressure of the bladetang, and which would drop out as soon as the pressure of the blade-tang is removed; but I am not aware of the use of such a spring as I have shown and described, combined and adapted to be used with a knife wherein the handle and its bolsters are each respectively formed from a single piece of material.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:

The pocket-knife shown and described, consisting of the combination of the handle D, formed from a single piece of material and having the blade and spring-channel S formed therein, bolster a, cast in one piece upon the end of said handle, blade B, and spring B, said spring being adapted to lie in the bottom of said channel and be held therein by means of the rivet F, passing through its inner end, and the blade-tang at its outer end, substantially as set forth.
