HENRY D. BOOTH, OF ELMIRA, NEV YORK.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,478, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed May 26, 1885. Serial No. [66,743.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY D. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bench-Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in bench-Vises; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a vise with a sliding jaw that can be moved independently of the body of the vise to which it is attached, to adjust the jaws with refer ence to each other to enable work of unusual size to be clamped between the jaws without moving the screw-actuated jaw, and thereby effect an economy in time.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
A represents a horizontal box, which is provided with a rectangular opening, B, extending throughout its entire length, and with a foot-piece, O, that is adapted to be secured to the work -bench. In the opening B slides a horizontal shank, D, of a clamping-jaw, E. The shank of the jaw is made hollow throughout nearly its entire length, as shown, being open at its lower side, and in the head of the shank is swiveled a screw, F, that extends through the shank and works in an interiorlyscrewthreaded stud, H, that projects up from the bottom of the box A, and enters the opening in the shank D. The upper side of the box is provided with laterallyextending flanges I, and on the upper side of the box, for a suitable distance from the rear end thereof, is formed a series of rack-teeth, K.
L represents a sliding jaw that is provided with a horizontal foot-plate, M, from the sides ofwhich plate depend flanges N, thelower ends (No model.)
of which are bent under the flanges I of the box A. In the plate M is made a transverse opening or slot, 0, in which is placed a gravitypawl, P, that is pivoted at one end, as at It. This pawl bears across the face of the box A, and engages with the rack-teeth K. By this construction it will be readily understood that the sliding jaw L can be adjusted back and forth with relation to the screw-actuated jaw E, and thereby save the time that would be required to move the jaw E by means of the screw when it is desired to widen the space between the jaws for the purpose of enabling the vise to clamp a piece of work of considerable width.
A benclnvise thus constructed isexceedingly simple in construction, can be sold for a low price, and saves considerable time to the workman.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The box or casing A, having the central longitudinal opening, B, foot-piece O, and the lug or stud H at one end, in combination with the screw-actuated jaw E, provided with the hollow shank D, sliding in the opening B, the screw G, working in the lug or stud H, and swiveled in the jaw E, and the movable slid ing jaw L, as set forth.
2. The box or casing A, provided with the rack-teeth on its upper side, a space being left between each tooth, in combination with the screw-actuated jaw, the sliding jaw L, having the transverse opening or slot 0, and the transverse gravity-pawl I, oblong in form, pivoted at one end to the sliding jaw and in its normal position fitting entirely within the slot 0, the lower edge of the pawl being received in the space between the rack-teeth, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY D. BOOTH.
