UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EARLE F. WATSON, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
SKATE-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION foIming part of Letters Patent No. 332,465, dated December 15, 1885. Application filed April 23, 1885. Serial No. 163,156. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EARLE F. WATsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skate-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for sharpening skates or similar purposes; and it consists in the novel combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of my device used as a skatesharpener. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a side view of one of the clamps detached.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates my device, consisting of two clamps, B B, each of which is provided in its upper portion with a slot, a a,a dapted to receive a file, O, or other sharpening-tool. The clamps B B can be adjusted on the file in the direction of the length of the latter, and are secured in any desired position by means of the thumbscrews a a, which can be screwed up to bear upon the top surface of the file, whereby it is rendered possible to set clamps so as to encompass any thickness desired.
In order to guide the clamps, and more especially to adjust the same so that they can be used in case the sides or surfaces of the object are oblique, as in the example shown in the drawings, where they are applied to a skate-runner, D, I provide each of the clamps with a swinging guide-plate, E, which is hinged to the clamp at b b, suitable projections 1) I), being formed on the clamps for that purpose. The guide-plates E E are adjusted to the oblique sides 0 0, of the skate-runner D, by means of thumb-screws d d, which engage threads formed in lugs e eon the clamps, their ends bearing upon corresponding extensions, ff, formed on the guide-plates, so that by screwing up on the thumb-screws the latter will be turned about their hinges b b until their inner surfaces bear flush against the sides of the skate-runner. By now imparting a reciprocating motion to the device the runner will be quickly sharpened, and any oscillating movement of the file, so as to render the surface of the runner untrue, is prevented by the guide-plates E, which bear closely upon the sides of the latter.
I do; no restrict the use of my device only to sharpening skates, as it is evident that the same can be employed in draw-filing, or polishing metal.
Instead of using a file, a flat Whetstone, emery-stone or other sharpeningtool may be inserted into the clamps.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with two clamps, B B, having openings for receiving a sharpeningtool and provided with thumb-screws a ct for securing the tool in place, of two swinging guideplates, E E, pivoted, respectively,t') the clamps and thumb-screws d, for swinging the guide-plates on their pivot-connection with the clamps, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination ofthe adjustable clamps B B, the slots formed therein constructed to receive a file or the like, the swinging guideplates E E, pivoted to the clamps and the thumb-screws, forswinging the guide-plates on their pivots, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the adjustable clamps B B, the slots formed therein, the lugs on the said clamps, the swinging guide-plates E E, pivoted to the clamps, the extension f, formed on the guide-plates, and the thumb-screws engaging threads in the lugs and bearing upon the extensions f, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
