This invention relates to large paperboard drums of the type capable of being used as containers for heavy materials and to an apparatus and method for mounting the end closure or bottom on such drums. In particular, the invention is directed to an improved construction and technique for rapidly producing paperboard drums with a permanently attached bottom closure and a top fixture for releasably mounting a top closure.
Paperboard drums have become highly accepted containers for various bulk products. The drums are conventionally comprised of a paperboard cylinder formed by a multiplicity of layers of glued paper and with a permanently mounted closure on one end. Various rigid and semi-rigid materials have been employed as the permanent end closure and various methods and devices have been employed to accomplish such permanent attachment. Generally the open end of the drum is provided with a rim fixture for appropriately attaching a removable top closure. One of the principal advantages of these paperboard drums over drums of other materials is the low cost thereof due to the low material cost and yet the heretofore conventional manufacturing techniques for constructing such drums have appreciably increased the cost of the drums.
Accordingly it is a principal object of this invention to provide a method and apparatus for rapidly constructing a novel paperboard drum wherein the strength characteristics are equal or superior to other paperboard drums.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel drum wherein the permanent end closure is also paperboard and includes a generally cylindrical flange which is permanently attached and secured to the interior of the paperboard cylinder.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel method and apparatus for permanently mounting the end closure in the cylinder of a paperboard drum and appropriately mounting a top rim fixture wherein the drum and end closure are releasably supported from the inside and rotated while appropriate shaping tools are externally applied to deform the paperboard drum and encircling metal bands to accomplish such mounting. A still further object is to provide such an apparatus wherein the shaping tools are contoured rollers progressively moved during rotation of the drum for causing such deformation. Still another object of this invention is to provide such an apparatus which is automatically operable for reliably producing paperboard drums.
Other and more detailed objects and advantage of this invention will appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now in further detail to FIGURES l, 6 and 9, the apparatus of this invention, generally designated 10, includes a support base 11 upon which is fixedly mounted a driving apparatus 12 and also upon which is movably mounted a support apparatus 13. The driving apparatus 12 includes appropriate motor and gearing means (not shown) of any conventional type for selectively driving the tubular shaft 14 at the desired rotational speeds. The support base .11 is provided with a pair of laterally spaced ways 15 extending in the horizontal direction parallel to tubular shaft 14 for slidably supporting the frame 16 of the support apparatus 13 for movement toward and away from the driving apparatus 12. The longitudinal length of support base 11 and ways 15 is foreshortened in the figures, but is to be understood and will readily appear from the following description that such length is sufiicient to accommodate longitudinal movement of the frame 16 a distance greater than the length of the paperboard drum that is to be constructed on the apparatus 10. Each of the ways 15 may include a portion 15a having reversely inclined surfaces for both supporting and guiding the movement of the frame 16 and a horizontal surface 15b for supporting the weight of the frame 16. The frame 16 is provided with a guide block assembly 17 for engaging a downwardly facing horizontal surface 15c of the ways 15 for preventing tipping of the frame 16. The longitudinal movement of support apparatus 13 is accomplished by any appropriate means such as a pneumatic piston and cylinder actuator assembly 18 with the cylinder mounted on the base 11 and the piston rod 19 connected to the frame 16.
The paperboard cylinder 9 of the drum is supported on the apparatus 13 by a pair of spaced chucks 20 and 21. The chucks 2i) and 21 are mounted on a cantilevered mandrel 22 which is rotatably supported from the frame 16. Chuck 20 is mounted on the end of mandrel 22 and chuck 21 is adapted for adjustable mounting along mandrel 22 for varying the spacing between chucks 20 and 21 to accommodate different lengths of cylinders 9. This adjustable mounting may be accomplished by any convenient means such as a keyway 23 provided in mandrel 22 with a key 24 releasably secured by bolts 25 in the hub 26 of the chuck 21. By releasing bolts 25 the chuck 21 and key 24 may be moved along mandrel 22 to any desired location.
The chucks 20 and 21 are provided with expandable means for engaging and supporting the interior of the drum 9 and, as shown in the drawings, these means may include a plurality of ring segments 27 individually secured to separate slide bars 28 which are in turn mounted for limited radial movement. With slide bars 28 in the outermost position the outer surfaces of the aggregate of the ring segments 27 describe'a cylindrical surface for engaging the internal cylindrical surface of the drum cylinder 9. In each chuck the slide bars 28 are slidably mounted in individual radial slots 29 in a flange 30. The flange 30 of chuck 20 is secured to mandrel 22 by bolts 31 and the flange 30 of chuck 21 is secured to or is an integral part of the hub 26, whereby flanges 30 are rotationally fixed relative to mandrel 22. A second flange 32 of each chuck encloses the slide bars 28 within the slots 29 and is rotatably mounted relative to the mandrel 22. Each slide bar 28 is provided with an inclined cam slot 33. Cam followers 34 are mounted in flanges 32 adjacent each slide bar 28 for engaging the cam slot 33 whereby. relative angular movement between'the flanges 30 and 32 of each chuck causesradial movement of the slide bars 28. An actuating shaft 35 is positioned parallel to and spaced from the axis of mandrel 22 and extends from chuck 20 through chuck 21 to a housing 36 positioned near frame 16. Shaft 35 is rotatably mounted in the flanges 30 of chucks 20 and 21 by bearings 37 and is rotatably mounted in housing 36 by a bearing 39. A spur gear 40 is mounted on shaft 35 at chuck 20 for engaging a spur gear segment 41 mounted on flange 32 of chuck 20. Similarly a spur gear 42 is mounted on shaft 35 at chuck 21 for engaging a spur gear segment 43 mounted on flange 32 of chuck 21. Spur gear 42 is slidably keyed to a keyway 44 in actuating shaft 35 whereby spur gear 42 may be moved along shaft 35 to accommodate adjustments of the location of chuck 21 along mandrel 22 as heretofore.
described. A bracket 38 mounted on vhub 26 confines gear 42 in the proper location for engaging the gear segment 43. Rotation of shaft 35 causes angular movement of flanges 32 relative to flanges 30 through thespur gears 40 and 42 and segments 41 and 43. The flange 32 of each chuck is provided with an arcuate slot 45 for the shaft 35 to pass through and for accommodating the movement of the flange 32 relative to the shaft.
Thus the relative rotation of flanges 30 and 32 for causing expansion and retraction of the ring segments 27 of the chucks 20 and 21 is accomplished by a small amount of rotation of actuating shaft 35 which could readily be accomplished manual-1y when the mandrel 22 is not rotating. However, for the overall automation of this apparatus and for permitting the actuation of chucks 20 and 21 without completely stopping mandrel 22, it is preferred to provide the hereinafter described remote operating mechanism. At housing 36 the shaft 35 is connected to a gear train comprised of meshing gears 46, 47 and 48. Gears 46 and 47 are rotatably mounted in housing 36 while gear 48 is fixedly mounted on an internal shaft 49. Housing 36 and mandrel 22 are mounted on the end of tubular support shaft 50 which is in turn rotatably mounted in frame 16. The other end of shaft 49 is connected to the shaft of a motor 51 which may be elecmotor 51 is actuated to rotate shaft 49 in either direction radial movement of ring segments 27 to release or engage the drum cylinder 9 as desired.
The driving apparatus 12 is also provided with a chuck 60 similar to heretofore described chucks 20 and 21.
Chuck 60 includes a plurality of ring segments 61 connected to guide bars 62 which are slidably mounted in grooves 63 ona flange 64. Flange 64 is mounted on tubular drive shaft 14. A rotatably mounted flange 65 is provided with cam followers 66 for engaging inclined cam slots 67 in the slide bars 62 whereby relative angular movement of flanges 65 and 64 causes radial movement of the slide bars 62 and ring segments 61. Such relative angular movement is accomplished by a centrally located actuating shaft 68 positioned within tubular shaft 14. A spur gear 69 is mounted on shaft 68 and meshes with a rotatably supported spur gear 70 which in turn engages paperboard cylinder 9 of the drum. With the axial spacing of chucks 21 and 20 appropriately adjusted and with the ring segments 27 of the chucks retracted, the paperboard cylinder 9 is fitted over the chucks and properly positioned thereon. The motor 51' is operated to rotate actuating shaft 35 and expand the ring segments 27 to tightly engage the interior surface of the drum cylinder 9. It is to be noted that the ring segments 27 of each of the chucks are spaced from the end of the drum cylinder and such spacing is of a predetermined amount to permit the I hereinafter described forming steps.
A circular end closure 8 is preformed of any convenient material such as paperboard and a flange 7 is formed in the end closure 8 by any convenient forming press operation. The flange 7 preferably extends perpendicular to the body of end closure 8 whereby the flange is a relatively cylindrical shape. The outside diameter of flange 7 is slightly greater than the internal diameter of the drum cylinder 9 whereby the 'end closure 8 must be forced into the drum cylinder 9. When inserted in the.
drum cylinder 9 to the proper position, the end closure 8 1s agamst the ring segments 27 of the chuck 20 and the end of drum cylinder 9 extends beyond the end 'of the cylindrical flange 7 as clearly shown in FIGUREll. Metal bands 6 and 5 are positioned on either end of the drum cylinder 9 encircling the cylinder adjacent the chucks 21 and 20, respectively. The piston and cylinder assembly 18 is then actuated to move the support apparatus 13 toward and into engagement with the driving apparatus 12.
In order to rotationally drive the support apparatus 13, the chucks 20 and 68 are provided with juxtaposed cooperative means for transmitting the rotational driving force from chuck 60- to chuck 20- and, as shown in the drawings, these means may include mating surfaces 75 and 76 on chucks 20 and 60, respectively for squeezing the end closure 8 therebetween and frictionally driving through such end closure. It is preferred that surfaces 75 and 76 'be of mating conical or curved configuration,
whereby the end closure Sis slightly distorted and thereby more firmly gripped. Moreover, it is preferred that one or both of the surfaces be provided with a surface material such as rubber which has a high coefficient of 'friction for further enhancing the frictional drive from chuck 60 through end closure 8 to chuck 20'. With the'support' apparatus 13 urged against the driving apparatus 12,
the respective components are in the position shown in dashed lines in FIGURE 11. The ring segments 61 of chuck 60 are expanded outwardly to engage the internal surface of the flange 7 of the end closure 8, thereby firmly confining the outer periphery of the end closure 8 against the internal surface of the drum cylinder 9.
Referring now to FIGURES 7, 8 and 9, the forming apparatus, generally designated 80, for forming the contoured top rim of the drum is shown in greater detail. The forming apparatus 80 includes a carriage frame 81 mounted on the support base 11 for longitudinal move ment therealong. Carriage frame 81 has a portion 82 for mating with the portion 150: of the way 15. The lower portion of carriage frame 81 is provided with a guide bar 83 for mating with a longitudinal slot 84 in the support base 11 and a retainer 85 is provided for retaining the guide bar 83 within the slot. The carriage 81 is adjustably attached to the frame 16 for movement with the entire support apparatus 13 by means of a connecting rod 86 secured 'by clamp 87 to frame 81 and by a pair of clamps 88 to frame 16. By this arrangement the forming apparatus 80 is appropriately located with respect to chuck 21 when the support apparatus is in the forward position engaging the driving apparatus 12. A tool post 89 is mounted on the carriage frame 81 for adjustment toward and away from the axis of rotation of the support apparatus 13 and at an angle to the horizontal. Such adjustment is accomplished by feed screw 90. An actuator 91, such as a pneumatic piston and cylinder, is mounted on tool post 89 with its piston rod 92 positioned for movement toward and away from the rotational axis of apparatus 13. A shaping or forming device 93 is mounted on piston rod 92 and includes a shaped roller 94 mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the rotational axis of apparatus 13. The ring segments 27 of the chuck 21 are provided with circumferential grooves 95 directly opposite the shaped roller 94. Grooves 95 are contoured to mate with shaped roller 94 to achieve precisely the desired shape of deformation of the drum rim. With the drum cylinder 9, bands 5 and 6, and end closure 8 in the proper position and with support apparatus 13 being driven by driving apparatus 12 all as heretofore described, the pneumatic actuator 91 is activated to urge the roller 94 radially inward against the band 6 and drum cylinder 9. The force applied by actuator 91 is properly adjusted for only partially deforming band 6 and drum cylinder 9 during each revolution of support apparatus 13, whereby the band and drum cylinder are progressively deformed to the condition shown in FIGURE 7 to produce an inwardly projecting annular rib 96. Rib 96 serves to reinforce the open top of the paperboard drum, insure a circular shape of the top, and provide an external groove for cooperating with a removable closure on the drum. A second tool post 97 is mounted on carriage frame 81 and the lateral position of tool post 97 may be adjusted in the slots 98 provided in the carriage frame 81 for accommodating the different diameters of paperboard barrels. Tool post 97 has cooperating components for permitting longitudinal sliding movement relative to carriage frame 81. A pneumatic actuator 99 is mounted on tool post 97 with piston rod 100 connected to the tool post platform for causing such longitudinal movement of the platform. A forming device 101 is mounted on the platform of tool post 97 and is provided with a shaped roller 102 mounted for rotation on a lateral axis. Roller 102 is provided with a smoothly curved groove 103 immediately adjacent a tapered surface 104 of the roller. It is to be noted that in its proper position the band 6 extends beyond the end of cylinder drum 9. Activation of actuator 99 causes roller 102 to move toward and against the projecting edge of band 6. The band is firmly locked in position by the prior formation of the annular rib 96. The band first engages the roller near the juncture of surface 104 and groove 103 and is urged inwardly by the shape of groove 103. Continued application of force by actuator 99 also causes inward curving of the end of drum cylinder 9 to form the bead 105 of approximate shape shown in FIG- 7. The force applied by actuator 99 is properly adjusted for accomplishing this formation of the bead through several revolutions of the drum whereby no damaging abrupt deformation occurs.
Referring now to FIGURES l and 10 through 14, the forming apparatus, generally designated 110, and the progressive steps of the method for securing the end closure 8 to the drum cylinder 9 are illustrated. The forming apparatus is mounted on a carriage frame 111 which is in turn adjustably mounted on support 'base 11 adjacent the driving apparatus 12. It is not essential that the carriage frame 111 be adapted for longitudinal movement along support base 11 as is necessary with carriage frame 81 as heretofore described. Forming apparatus 110 includes a forming device 112 similar to forming device 93 and having a shaped roller 113 mounted for rotation on a longitudinal axis. Device 112 is radially movable by actuator 114 which is in turn mounted on tool post 115, both similar to actuator 91 and tool post 89 heretofore described. When the support apparatus 13 is in the forward position for rotational drive from the driving ap paratus 12 as described heretofore, the shaped roller 113 is positioned directly opposite circumferential grooves 116 provided in the ring segments 27 of chuck 20. Grooves 116 are provided at the extreme edge of ring segments 27 as contrasted to the heretofore described grooves 95 on the ring segments of chuck 21. However, the complete groove is defined by grooves 95 and the presence of the adjacent ring segments 61 of the chuck 60, and is contoured to mate with roller 113 to produce the desired rib shape. Activation of actuator 114 causes radial inward movement of shaped roller 113 to engage and progressively deform the band 5 and drum cylinder 9 during plural revolutions of the support apparatus to form the inwardly projecting annular rib 117 similar to the annular rib 96. Annular rib 117 is immediately adjacent and contacting the end closure 8 and serves as rigid support for such end closure against movement in that direction. Another tool post 118 is mounted on carriage frame 111 for longitudinal movement relative thereto by means of a pneumatic actuator (not shown) connected to the tool post platform by the actuator piston rod 119. A forming device 120 is mounted on tool post 118 and extends in the longitudinal direction. Forming device 120 is provided with a shaped roller 124 mounted for rotation on a lateral axis. Shaped roller 124 is provided with a smoothly curved groove 125 joined to a radial flange portion 126. The forming accomplished by roller 124 is performed subsequent to the formation of or at least the partial formation of annular rib 117 whereby the band 5 is firmly anchored and located on the drum cylinder 9. The lateral position of roller 124 is such that the flange portion 126 is immediately outside of the band 5. Activation of the longitudinal actuator (not shown) causes longitudinal movement of tool post 118 through piston rod 119 thereby moving the roller 124 against the projecting end of band 5. The flange portion 126 confines the band 5 inwardly and continued longitudinal movement and application of force causes the end of the band 5 to be curved inwardly by the curved groove 125 and to encircle both the end of drum cylinder 9 and the end of flange 7. Further, it is preferred that drum cylinder 9 extend slight- 1y beyond the end of flange 7 whereby the material of the drum cylinder is compressed around the end of flange 7 to form a tight bead 128. During the preliminary stage of this forming operation the ring segments 61 of chuck 60 are in the expanded position for engaging the end closure 8 and its flange 7. Ring segments 61 are provided with a portion 129 for accommodating the roller 124 during the preliminary formation of the bead 128. The ring segments 61 of chuck 60 are retracted to the position shown in FIGURE 13 during the formation of head 128 to avoid interference and actuator 121 is activated to urge with such formation. The bead 128 enhances the reinforcing effect of the band 5 and tightly confines the end closure 8 against the annular rib 117.
drum may be axially removed from the support apparatus either during or after the retraction of the support apparatus.
Referring now to FIGURES 15 through 18, there is illustrated a modified embodiment of the apparatus and method for securing the end closure 8 to the drum 9.
.The driving arrangement and chucks 2d and 69 are the same as heretofore described. The forming device 112 with roller 113 is included in the identical or a similar manner for forming the inwardly projecting rib 117 in the drum 9 and band 5. In order to improve the shape and reliability of the bead 128, the forming device 120 is resolved into a plurality of sequentially operated forming devices such as the three devices 120a, 1201) and 1200 shown in the drawings. It is to be understood that this modified embodiment contemplates using any desired number and shape of forming devices for accomplishing the particular forming operation in the best manner. The forming devices 120a, 1201) and 1200 include shaped rollers 124a, 12412 and-124e, respectively, mounted for rotation about axis generally radial to the drum 9 and are provided with actuating means for moving the rollers longitudinally toward the end of the drum. In the illustrated arrangement the roller 124:: has a narrow groove and is urged against the end of the band 5 first for tightly curling the band around the edge of the drum cylinder 9. At the end of the movement stroke of device 120a, a switch 130 is activated for both retracting roller 124a and starting the forward movement of forming device 120b..The shaped roller 12417 has a curved surface for rolling the band 5 and drum end around the flange 7 of the end closure 8 as shown in FIGURE 17. Completion of this forming step causes actuation of another switch 131 for. retracting roller 12417 and starting the forward movement of forming device 120C. As shown in FIGURE 18, the roller 124a completes the formation of the bead 128 to tightly grip and confine the end closure'8 against the rib 117. In this manner the most advantageous bead shape may be developed. In all other respects the modified embodiment of FIGURES -18 is the same as the form of FIGURES The heretofore described operations of forming the bands 6 and 5 may be accomplished simultaneously whereby the forming of the paperboard drum is extremely rapid and a completed drum is produced for each cycle of the apparatus 10. The appropriate sequential operation of the various described actuators may be manually controlled or automatically controlled by appropriate switching means well known to those skilled in the art. During actual production line operation, the construction of the paperboard drum is preferably carried on immediately following construction of the drum cylinder 9 whereby the laminated paper material thereof is still damp for readily permitting formation of the ribs 96 and 117 without splitting or otherwise damaging the paper. If previously made drum cylinders 9 are used, the cylinders may be appropriately moistened to produce forming characteristics similar to newly made drum cylinders.
