UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. CLAUDE WHITE, OF SW'ATARA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DITCHING AND TILE-LAYING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,126, dated December 8, 1885. Application filed April 17, 1885. Serial No. 162,534. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. CLAUDE WHITE. a citizen of the United States, residing at Swatara, in the county of Schuylkill, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Ditching and Tile-Laying Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a tile-laying machine embodying my invention.
The object of this invention is to provide for the ready laying of tiles in a convenient and uniform manner, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the beam of the machine, which is provided with a frame, B, for the support of the various parts of the machine.
0 represents an endless belt or chain, which is passed around a pulley D, and also around a pulley, F, the latter being secured to the wheels L of the machine.
E represents a pulley around which passes an endless apron or conveyer, N, the latter also passing around a pulley, D, it being noticed that said conveyer is located within a hopper or chute,M.
1-1 I J K represent plows, which are secured to the beam A and adapted for properly forming the furrow, the bottom of the plows K having a sole, G, for forming the ditch in which the tile is to be laid. At the side of the hopper or chute M, and at the rear thereof, is a hopper or chute, P, for earth, and secured to the beam A, at the rear of the said hopper or chute P, are plows Q Q, for closing or filling the furrow after the tile is laid.
It will be seen that when the machine is drawn forward the furrow and ditch are formed, and as the hopper or chute Mis prop erly supplied with tile and the hopper or chute P with earth, the tiles are carried down the chute M by the conveyer N, and thus regularly and conveniently laid in the ditch formed to receive them, after which the earth from the chute P covers the tile as laid, and the ditch is afterward filled by the earth thrown thereinto by the action of the plows Q, it being evident that motion is communicated to the conveyer N by the wheels L of the machine through the medium of the pulleys E F and belt or chain 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I (1Ll m as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a ditching and tile-laying machine, a frame, in combination, with a tile conveyer and layer and an earth-hopper, substantially as described.
2. The combinatiomwith a frame, of a tile conveyer and layer, an earth-hopper, and a covering-plow, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the character named, the combination, with a tile-conveyer actuated from the driving-wheels, of an earth-hopper and a covering-plow, substantially as described.
4. In a ditching and tile-laying machine, the beam A, provided with a plow or plows, in combination with the frame B, wheels L, pulley F mounted on the axle of'said Wheels L, endless'belt O,pulleys D,D, and E, and conveyer N, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a ditching and tile-laying machine, the beam A,provided with one or more plows, in combination with the frame B, wheel L, a
tile-conveyer, means whereby the rotation of 8( the wheel L actuates the tile-conveyer, a dirt hopper and chute, and a covering-plow, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. 0. WHITE.
