Miller, Louisville, Ky., assignor to Double Envelope Corporation, Roanoke, Va., a corporation of Virginia Filed Dec. 21, 1964, Ser. No. 420,063 4 Claims. (Cl. 229-71) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosed envelope is specifically for insurance policies, etc. but unlike the traditional such envelope, a pocket is provided between the transparent material covering the window opening and the front panel of the envelope into which a card can be placed identifying the salesman.
This envelope can be made by the same machine, using the same envelope blanks except for the proportions of the window, and at the same speed as the conventional envelopes, the difference in making being in the location of the lines of adhesive which are printed on the envelope blanks as they pass through the machine.
This invention relates to envelopes, more particularly window envelopes for such items as insurance policies or other documents, having a separate pocket to receive a card and having a window through which indicia on the card may be viewed.
Certain documents, such as insurance policies, are conventionally placed in elongated open-end, window envelopes. The name of the insurance company and the policy number are visible through the window of the envelope, but there is no provision for display of other information such as agents name, phone number and address.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an envelope of the type discussed above with a small windowed pocket into which, for instance, the agents business card may be inserted, so that the agents name is visible through the window. If the agency changes personnel or address, a new card may replace the card in the small pocket so that the pertinent information with respect to the contents of the envelope can be kept current.
Other and further objects and advantages will become apparent from the following specification, taken with the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view of the envelope blank assembled with a sheet of window material but prior to the folding into its final form;
FIGURE 2 is a view of the Window side of the completed envelope;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary view similar to FIGURE 2 showing a card being inserted; and
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 3 showing the card positioned in the envelope.
The envelope is formed of a paper blank 1 and a transparent sheet 2.
Blank 1 comprises a back panel 3, a front panel 4 having windows 5 and 6 therein. A flap 7 extends along the side of back panel 3 opposite the windowed panel 4, and a flap 8 extends along the bottom of back panel 3 to fold over panel 4 and flap 7 to close the bottom of the envelope.
Transparent sheet 2 is secured on the side of panel 4 that will lie against back panel 3, and is secured in place by adhesive between sheet 2 and panel 4 which may be arranged to surround the window 5 on at least three sides as seen at 9. While it is desirable to use also a line of adhesive 10 to secure the edge of sheet 2 to panel 4,
such line of adhesive is not essential to the present invention, as the width and position of adhesive 9 may be varied.
A line of adhesive 11 is used to secure the bottom edge of sheet 2 to panel 4. This line of adhesive supports the card 16 opposite window 6, as well as prevents the bottom of sheet 2 from becoming folded or rumpled. Omission of line of adhesive 11 would not, however, destroy the utility of the envelope and, in some cases where an extra large card is to be used, it would be desirable to omit this line of adhesive.
It will be noted that the lines of adhesive 9 and 10 do not extend appreciably below windows 5, and line of adhesive 9 is close to the edge of panel 4. Flap 7 carries adhesive 12 for its full length so that flap 7 being folded against panel 3, and panel 4 being folded to overlie panel 3 and flap 7, the line of adhesive 12 bonds to the sheet 2 for its entire length to completely close the vertical, or longitudinal, seam of the envelope. Flap 8, carrying adhesive 13, is folded to overlie'panel 4 to seal the bottom of the envelope.
It will be noted, then, that a document slid into the top end of the envelope is fully protected in the manner of conventional envelopes of this type. There is, however, a pocket, accessible from the side of the envelope adjacent flap 7, and near the bottom of the envelope, that lies between panel 4, and sheet 2, and bounded by adhesive areas 9 and 11. Window 6 occurs in this portion of panel 4 at a location to register with the name on business card 16. The specific location of window 6 may be changed as required for cards of different design.
Nicks 14, 14' may be provided as is customary at the top edges of panels 3 and 4, and a notch 15 may be provided to facilitate insertion into, and removal of card 16 from the window pocket.
It would be possible, within the scope of the present invention to locate the pocket adjacent the top of the envelope which may be envisioned by providing flap 8 at the other end of panel 3 than shown in FIGURES 1 and 2.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. An envelope having a back panel and a front panel having a window, a sheet of substantially transparent material lying between said back panel and said front panel and adhesively secured to said front panel along at least two sides of and coextensive with the length of said window, said sheet of transpartent material extending a substantial distance in one direction beyond the adhesive securement adjacent said window to provide an end of said transparent material extending to a position remote from said window, the said end remote from said window being also adhesively secured at its extremity to said front panel remote from said window to provide a pocket between said front panel and said transparent material remote from said window, said pocket being open along an edge of said front panel.
2. An envelope comprising a back panel, a side sealing flap, a front panel having a window therein, said front panel overlying said side sealing flap, a bottom sealing flap overlying and adhesively secured to said front panel, a sheet of substantially transparent material lying between said side sealing flap and said front panel and covering said window, said transparent material being adhesively secured to said side sealing flap along its entire length, and adhesively secured to said front panel along at least two edges of the window, said transparent material being secured also to said front panel along an edge remote from the window and from the adhesive securement between said front panel a-nd said transparent material adjacent said window to provide a pocket between said front panel and said sheet of transparent material bounded by the adhesive adjacent the window and the adhesive along said edge remote from the window and open along that edge of said front panel that overlies said side sealing flap. 3. 4. An envelope comprising a back panel, a front panel having a cut out window opening of substantially less length than said front panel, side and bottom closing flaps, said cut out window opening being positioned near one end of said envelope for viewing the contents of the envelope, a sheet of substantially transparent material covering said out out window opening and secured to said side closing flap for the full length of said transparent material, and secured to said front panel only along the 5 said front panel.

Claims (1)

1. AN ENVELOPE HAVING A BACK PANEL AND A FRONT PANEL HAVING A WINDOW, A SHEET OF SUBSTANTIALLY TRANSPARENT MATERIAL LYING BETWEEN SAID BACK PANEL AND SAID FRONT PANEL AND ADHESIVELY SECURED TO SAID FRONT PANEL ALONG AT LEAST TWO SIDES OF AND COEXTENSIVE WITH THE LENGTH OF SAID WINDOW, SAID SHEET OF TRANSPARENT MATERIAL EXTENDING A SUBSTANTIAL DISTANCE IN ONE DIRECTION BEYOND THE ADHESIVE SECUREMENT ADJACENT SAID WINDOW TO PROVIDE AN END OF SAID TRANSPARENT MATERIAL EXTENDING TO A POSITION REMOTE FROM SAID WINDOW, THE SAID REMOTE FROM SAID WINDOW BEING ALSO ADHESIVELY SECURED AT ITS EXTREMITY TO SAID FRONT PANEL
