Be it known that I, WILLIAM CORTEEN, a resident of Sheffield, county of York, in the Kingdom of Great Britain, and a citizen of Great Britain, have invented certain ncwand useful Improvements in Chairs or Rail Fasteners for Railways and Tramways, (patented in Great Britain, January ll, 1884, No. 1,222 of 1384;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in chairs or rail fasteners for railways and tramways, the object of my invention beingto support and secure any description of rail in place by chairs of a novel construction, affording equal support on both sides of the rail, and adapted to tightly grip the rail While in use, and to facilitate fastening and releasing such rails, as hereinafter set forth.

The nature and application of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, like letters of reference, Where such letters appear, indicating corresponding parts in the drawings.

The base of the chair consists of a metal block haviuga dat bearing with holes for bolts and nuts, (I prefer those known as Ibbotsons patent,`) to secure it to any foundation, and having fixed supports for the bottom and one side of the rail. It is provided With a loose block 01' movable part to support the rail on its other side, so as to enable the rail to be readily putin place or lifted out. The movable part is formed and iitted on thus: A 1ecess,partly divided by a strong central projection,is provided in the base of the chair on such side in such form as to admit of the rail being placed in or out of its position, and the above movable part is made to iit in and con respond with said recess, being also shaped to fit against the rail, and having two lugs or (No model.) Horizontal holes are formed in the movable part and in said projection on the base of the chair, being made slightly lower in the latter than in the movable part, and a cross pin or bolt (being usually slightly tapered at one end) is driven through the holes. By this method a drawjoint or draW-boltaction is obtained, whereby the parts are drawn closely together and a iirin grip obtained, or the saine may be liberated by the reverse action.

To preserve the rail and chair from rust, I int-erpose between the rail and the chair a thin layer of leather or other substitute. and in usual cases I place a bearing of leather or india-rubber or othcrsubstitute under the chair, whereby in either case a vacancy and lodgment of Water and moisture therein is avoided. The chairs can be employed for all the varieties of rails in use, including the rails of train \v ays.

In Figs. l, 2, A is the base of the chair, the dat under side resting on a layer, B, ofleather or the like, the chair and layer being fastened to the sleeper by the bolts and nuts C. The side of the chair marked D and shaded is shaped or recessed and provided with a central projection, partly within the recess, as shown, to admit the niovable part M after the rail is putin position, the tivo lug or foot ends D having to pass slight-ly underneath the rail E.

In Figs. 3 and 4 the rail Eis shown in position, and with the movable part M fitted in said recessed portion of the chair, and secured by a cross-pin, P. The holes for the cross-pin are shown at G, Fig. I.

'Vhen the chair is used for holding together the ends of the rails, the parts are made Wider and placed upon the sleeper in such a position as to receive the ends of the rails in the iniddle of the chair. By this means'erosslbolts, wedges, fish-plates, and other iastenings are dispensed with.
