Description

y 1967 l. AURAEN CARRYING DEVICE FOR A CHAIN TYPE MOTOR SAW Filed Oct; 26, 1965 a M w m A m I United States Patent 3,317,098 CARRYING DEVICE FOR A CHAIN TYPE MOTOR SAW Inge Auraen, Tyristrand, Norway Filed Oct. 26, 1965, Ser. No. 505,254 3 Claims. (Cl. 224-) The present invention relates to a carrying device fora chain-type motor saw during use thereof for felling logs and lopping twigs therefrom.
During work with a motor saw of the type above mentioned, the operator, in addition to controlling and feeding the saw, also has to carry, with his arms more or less 'bent, the whole weight of the saw. This is tiresome and at the same time renders an effective handling and control of the saw difficult in connection with the different working operations whereby the amount of work is reduced.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a supporting device for a chain-type motor saw during use thereof and by means of which a substantial part of the Weight of the saw is transferred to the upper part of the body of the operator, preferably to the area of the shoulders.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carrying device in which the motor saw is suspended by resilient means the force of which is adapted to the weight of the saw to support the saw in a floating condition at an approximately correct level relative to the Working position of the operator, which level easily may be adjusted by applying a relatively weak depressing or 11fting force on the saw.
The invention will further be described, by way of example only, with reference to the embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view showing the support device unfolded, and Y 4 FIGURE 2 is a view showing the support device carried by the operator using a motor saw. ,1
As shown in the drawing the support device or harness comprises a strap 1 to be placed and supported on the upper part of the body of the operator, said strap comprising a relatively wide part 2 and a preferably integral narrower part 3 extending from one end thereof. Strap part 3 is provided with holes for co-operation with a buckle connected to the other end of strap part 2.
The strap part 2 adjacent each end thereof is provided with at least one fastening means 4 and 5 respectively, each having the form of a clasp or ring secured to the strap part by means of a short strip 6 the ends of which are secured to said part, such as by nails or sewing. A relatively short strap 7 has one end secured to the ring 4 and the other end provided with a buckle 8 for cooperation with the part 3 of the strap 1.
The ring 4 serves also as fastening means for a first suspension member or strop 10, comprising a helical spring 11 having one end detachably connected to said ring 4 by means of a spring hook 9. A swivel link 12 may be interposed between the spring 11 and hook 9. At the other end, the spring 11 is provided with a link 13 in which is secured a strap loop 14 adapted to encircle the left hand of the operator. The strap forming the loop 14 has a width which provides an appropriate support of the hand, and has an aperture 16 in which the thumb of the hand may be inserted whereby the loop is held in position on the hand. If so desired, a glove-like member (not shown) to receive the hand may be secured in the loop or form a replacement thereof.
At the end of the strap part 2 remote from the ring 4 a second suspension member 18 is detachably secured to the ring 5 by means of a spring hook 17, connected to one end of a helical spring 19 the other end of which "ice by means of a swivel link 20, a spring hook 21 and a ring is connected to an attachment strap 22.
In FIG. 2 of the drawing the carrying device is diagrammatically illustrated in use, the motor saw S being shown in broken lines.
The strap part 2 is placed on the operators left shoulder with the free end bearing the ring 4 at the breast and the other end is guided under the right arm and connected to the buckle 8 of the strap 7, as shown. Due to the buckle 8 being connected to the ring 4 by means of the strap 7, this connection permits the strap to occupy an appropriate angle position relative to the front end of the strap part 2 and not interfere with the support thereof against the breast of the operator. The suspension member 10 is by means of the strap loop 14 connected to the operators left hand which grips the front handle 25 of the saw S. Thus the member 10 is joined with the saw S by the aid of the operators hand, which is found advantageous as the handle 25 and the front end of the saw S easily and quickly may be released for emergencies. The suspension member 18 which is connected to the ring 5 positioned at the right side of the back of the operator is guided around the right arm and secured by means of the attachment strap 22 to the rear handle 26 of the saw S.
In the position shown, the saw S would be suspended on the suspension members 10 and 18 and the elastic force thereof is such that the saw is in an approximately floating condition at a level suitable to the working position of the operator. Said level may then be adjusted according to the respective working operations by imparting only a relatively weak depressing or lifting force to the saw.
In transferring the weight of the saw to the body of the operator in this manner, the handling and control of the saw in the different positions thereof during lopping twigs from logs is made easy and without danger.
As will be understood the length of the respective suspension members may be regulated, such as by varying the circumference of the loop 14 and the attachment strap 22, or a number of fastening members, such as rings 4 and 5, may be arranged at both ends of the strap part 2 spaced longitudinally thereof and in which the spring hooks may be secured at Will. Further the springs 11 and 19 may be replaced by strops of elastic material, such as rubber or the like.
I claim:
1. Carrying device for a chain-type motor saw having front and rear handles, the device comprising a buckled strap adapted to be strapped around the body of an operator, running across one shoulder and under the opposite arm, said strap comprising a relatively wide part having a free end and a second narrower part extending from the other end thereof; fastening means provided on said strap in spaced relation longitudinally thereof, the fastening means including a first ring secured at the free end of the relatively wide strap part, a buckle connected to said ring to cooperate with the second strap part, and a second ring secured adjacent the other end of the relatively wide strap part; a first resilient suspension strop detachably connected to said first ring; a second resilient suspension strop detachably connected to said second ring; and means at the free ends of said resilient strops for connection thereof to the front and rear handles of said saw, respectively.
2. Carrying device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first resilient suspension strop comprises a helical spring having at one end a spring hook and at the other end means for connection thereof to the hand of the operator gripping the front handle of the saw.
