Be it known that we, JOHN J. ENRIGHT and DAVID J OHN hIAY, of Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Ouspidors for Railway-Cars; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaceompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of cuspidors, by means of {which they are adapted for use in cars or railway-coaches, easily keptclean and sweet, and conducive to the comfort of passengers.

The invention consists in securing in the floor of the car a pipe of any desired form, having an open top level with the plane of the floor projecting below the bottom of such floor, and having its lower end provided with a closely-fitting valve operated by a suitable provision within the car and adapted to discharge the contents of the cuspidor proper,' and when closed to exclude air and dust, the whole as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a central vertical section of our improved device for the purpose stated. Fig. 2 shows the parts composing our improved device in perspective.

In the drawings, A represents a curved pipe having a rim, B, through a series of holes in which screws or nails are employed to secure the top of such pipe to the door 0 of the car, allowing the body of the pipe to project throughasuitableholein said floor. In order to open the valve when desired and from within the car, a pin, F, having two diameters oldifferent sizes, is passed through a hole, d, in the rim, and a larger but coincident in position hole in the car-floor, so that the point of the pin engages with the groove e in the neck of the valve, so that pressure of the foot being applied to the top of the pin causes the valve to open, thereby allowing the contents of the pipe to escape to the ground below. In Fig. 2 the rear face of this valve is presented. The bars of the grating are triangular in form, as shown, and for an obvious purpose.

In cleaning the floor of the car the water used for the purpose may be discharged through the pipe, thereby easily cleansing it.

We are aware of the Patent No. 59,280, which shows a valve normally open, and a lever pivoted thereto adapted to close said valve by pressure on the upper end of said lever, and make no claim to such construction as forming part of our invention.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with an open-ended vessel for the purposes described, a valve constructed to normally close the lower end of such vessel, and an opening-pin, as F, loosely stepped upon the neck of such valve and pro jecting above the floor to which such vessel is attached and constructed to open said valve by pressure on its head, substantially as described.

The combination, with the vessel A, having hole (I and ears 0 c, of the valve E, hung between said ears and provided with groove 6, and the pin F, passed through the hole at, and engaging with the groove 0 in the neck of the valve, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
