HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patentl No. 331,681, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed February 4, i881. Serial No. 354,863.
To aZZ whom it may con-067171,.-
Be it known that I RAYMOND W. GAHooNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county ofPhiladelphia,in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HarnessSaddles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to I@ which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to reduce the cost and facilitate the process of manufacturing saddles; and it consists in the peculiar ar rangements and combinations of parts, sub stantially as will be hereinafter set fort-h, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring' to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure l is a vertical section of a portion of a harness-saddle, showing the relation of an adjustable or separable back-band loop to the other parts of said` saddle. Eig. 2 is a plan oi' a portion of the under plate oi' said saddle.
Fig. 3 is a plan of a holding-plate and the loop in connection therewith. Eig. 4 is a plan of 3o the bottom of a portion of the same, and Eig.
5 is a detached vieW of the loop.
In said drawings, a. indicates the usual leather iiap, having the terret-perforation I;
and hook-perforation c. CZ is a holding-plate which passes up under the jockey to the terret, and is therebyheld in position, the terret passing through the opening e in said holdingplate.
Said holding-plate is provided at the (No model.)
lower end thereof with a hook or other fastening, f, which passes down through the iiap and enters into holding engagement with the under plate, g. Back of said hook the said plate d is provided on the under side With a loop-holding lug, h, which extends down to said flap and provides a bearing for the perforated shank la of the separable back-band loop m. The said shank k is held up from the Hap and against the plate d by a suitable lug, n, and thus any danger of the shank slipping under the holding-lug is ohviated.
The sides o 0 of the holding-plate are turned down to provide side bearings, which prevent the shank of' the loop from moving laterally to any objectionable degree. By this construction the loop may be finished apart from the part d, so that should one portion be in gold and the other finished in black the saine can be accomplished at a greatly-diminished expense as compared with the cost of doing the same Where the parts are integral.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is In combination,in a saddle, the flap and perforated under plate, the holding-plate having the hook f, log h, and hearings o o, and the separable loop m, having the perforated shank and lug a, all said parts being arranged and operating substantiaily as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 7o have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of Eebruary, 1885.
RAYMOND IV. CAHOONE.
