No. 481,619 6 Claims. (Cl. 49-254) My invention relates to parking space guarding devices.
Parking lots for vehicles, such as privately owned automobiles, often contain a plurality of parking spaces assigned or rented to specific individuals. Many types of such lots have no guard or custodian and further have exits and entrances which can be used freely by general automobile tratfic. For example, off the street parking lots of large apartment houses or shopping developments often fall within this category. The owners or operators of such lots are always concerned with the ever present problem of preventing unauthorized parking of automobiles in parking spaces assigned to others.
In my US. Patent 3,066,431, I disclosed a parking space guarding device which solves this problem by providing a parking space guarding device for preventing unauthorized parking in assigned spaces in a parking lot that requires little or no maintenance, and can be operated "at will by the individual or individuals authorized to have access to such spaces.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved parking space guard which functions in the same manner as my aforesaid patented invention and yet can be manufactured even more inexpensively and with fewer and less complex parts.
This and other objects of my invention will either be explained or will become apparent hereinafter,
In accordance with my invention my parking space guarding device is positioned between two adjacent parking spaces in a parking lot. First and second columns aligned with the device are positioned on opposite sides of these two spaces. The device can block vehicular access to either or both spaces or, depending upon its setting, can permit vehicles to enter either or both spaces freely.
The device itself can comprise a vertical member. A horizontal shaft extends through the member adjacent its top end. First and second hollow sleeves open at both ends slidably engaged and are concentrically disposed about the shaft adjacent opposite ends thereof. A first elongated guard element is secured to the first sleeve. A second elongated guard element is secured to the second sleeve. By virtue of the connection to the corresponding sleeve, each element is rotatable through a vertical are about the shaft.
Secured to the top of the member is means such as a horizontal cap having first and second oppositely disposed vertically downward extending side walls parallel to the shaft. The first wall has a cut away portion adjacent the first sleeve with a first prong extending out of this cut away portion and pointing horizontally in the plane of the first wall. The second wall has a cut away portion adjacent the second sleeve with a second prong extending out of this cut away portion and pointing horizontally in the plane of the second wall.
The first element carries an aperture which can be placed into or out of registration with the first prong. The second element carries an aperture which can be placed into or out of registration with the second prong.
Each element has a first or blocking position in which it extends horizontally whereby vehicular access to the appropriate parking space can be blocked. Alternatively, each element has a second or free position in which it extends vertically and permits unimpeded vehicular access to the appropriate space.
Each element can be placed in the blocking position by 3 ,316,677 Patented May 2, 1967 swinging the element into the horizontal position and sliding the sleeve secured to this element until the aperture of this element engages the appropriate prong whereby the element is held in horizontal position. By sliding the sleeve to move the aperture out of engagement with the appropriate prong,v the element can be swung downward into the vertical free position.
An illustrative embodiment of my present invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top view of my invention with one guard element in blocking (horizontal) position and the other guard element in vertical (free) position;
FIG. 2 is a side view thereof taken through 22 in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is an end view thereof FIG. 1.
Referring now to FIGS. 1-3, there is shown a vertical hollow metal cylinder 10 having first and second oppositely disposed vertically aligned circular holes through which a horizontal metal shaft 12 extends with a friction tight fit. Opposite ends of this shaft are threaded and engage end nuts 14 and 16. A first hollow cylindrical sleeve 18 is concentrically disposed about the shaft intermediate nut 14 and cylinder 10 and is slidable therealong. A second hollow cylindrical sleeve 20 is concentrically disposed about the shaft intermediate nut 16 and cylinder 10 and is slidable therealong.
A first elongated guard element 22 is secured at the end of sleeve 18 adjacent cylinder 10. More particularly element 22 is an angle member having a horizontal section 24 Welded to the surface of sleeve 18 and an attached vertical section 26 having a hole through which the shaft extends.
Similarly a second elongated guard element 28 of like construction is secured to the end of sleeve 20 adjacent cylinder 10 by having its horizontal section 30 welded to the surface of sleeve 20 and its attached vertical section 32 having a hole thorugh which the shaft extends.
A flat met-a1 cap or plate 34 is secured to the top of cylinder 10 and extends horizontally thereover. Plate 34 has first and second oppositely disposed vertically downward extending side walls 36 and 38 which are parallel to shaft 12. Wall 36 has a cut out portion 40 adjacent sleeve 18 with a prong 42 extending horizontally toward nut 14 in the plane of wall 36. Wall 38 has a cut out portion 44 adjacent sleeve 20 with a prong 46 extending horizontally toward nut 16 in the plane of wall 38.
Section 26 of element 22 has an aperture 48 which, when this element is swung through a vertical arc to a horizontal position by a user and sleeve 18 is slid toward cylinder 10, can be moved into engagement with prong 42 to hold element 22 in the blocking position previously described. Of course, sleeve 18 can be slid away from cylinder 10 to disengage aperture 48 and prong 42 whereby element 22 can be swung through a vertical are downward to its vertical or free position as previously described.
Section 32 of element 28 has an aperture 50 which cooperates with prong 46 in the same manner as aperture 48 of section 26 of element 22 cooperates with prong 46.
Plate 34 adjacent side wall 36 in the region of sleeve 18 has a circular hole 52 which is placed into registration with a like hole 54 in the horizontal section 24 of element 22 when in the blocking position whereby a padlock can extend between these aligned holes to lock element 22 in the blocking position. Similarly plate 34 adjacent side wall 38 in the region of sleeve 18 has a circular hole 56 which can be moved into registration with a like hole 58 in the horizontal section 30 of element 28 for locking purposes.
Moreover, side wall 36 adjacent sleeve 20 has a circular hole 60 which can be connected by a padlock to hole 58 taken through 33 in in element 28 to lock same in the vertical position. Side wall 38 adjacent sleeve 20 has a circular hole 62 which can be locked to hole 54 in element 22 for the same purpose.
This invention can be used in a parking lot in the same manner as described in my aforementioned patent.
While I have shown and pointed out my invention as applied above, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many modifications can be made within the scope and sphere of my invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A parking lot guarding device comprising (a) a vertical member;
(b) a shaft extending horizontally through said member adjacent the top end thereof;
() a hollow horizontal sleeve concentrically disposed on said shaft adjacent one end thereof and slidable thereon toward and away from said member;
((1) an elongated element secured at one end to said sleeve and rotatable in a vertical are about said shaft, said element having an aperture spaced apart from said sleeve; and
(e) means secured to said member and having a horizontally extending prong pointing in a direction parallel to said shaft, said prong being spaced from said sleeve in a position at which, when the element is swung to a horizontal position and said sleeve is slid towards said member, said prong engages said aperture and said element is held in horizontal position, said element extending vertically downward from said sleeve when said prong is disengaged from said aperture.
2. A parking lot guarding device comprising (a) a vertical member;
(1)) a shaft extending horizontally through said member adjacent the top end thereof with first and second opposite ends of said shaft disposed on opposite sides of the member;
(c) first and second hollow horizontal sleeves, each sleeve being concentrically disposed on said shaft adjacent a corresponding one of the first and second ends and slidable on the shaft toward and away from said member;
(d) first and second elongated elements, each element being secured at one end to a corresponding sleeve and rotatable in a vertical are about said shaft, each element having an aperture spaced apart from said sleeve; and
(e) means secured to said member and having first and second horizontally extending prongs pointing in a direction parallel to said shaft and opposite to each other, each prong being positioned adjacent a corresponding one of the sleeves in a position at which, when the corresponding element is swung to a horizontal position and the corresponding sleeve is slid toward said member, said each prong engages the aperture of the corresponding element and the corresponding element is held in horizontal position.
3. A parking lot guarding device comprising (a) a vertical member;
(b) a shaft extending horizontally through said member adjacent the top end thereof with first and second opposite ends of said shaft disposed on opposite sides of the member;
(c) first and second hollow horizontal sleeves, each sleeve being concentrically disposed on said shaft adjacent a corresponding one of the first and second ends and slidable on the shaft toward and away from said member;
(d) first and second elongated elements, each element being secured at one end to a corresponding sleeve and rotatable in a vertical arc about said shaft, each element having an aperture spaced apart from said sleeve; and
(e) a horizontal plate secured to the top of said member and provided with first and second oppositely disposed vertically downward extending side walls parallel to said shaft, the first wall having a cut away portion adjacent the first sleeve with a first prong extending thereout and pointing horizontally in the plane of the first wall, the second wall having a cut away portion adjacent the second sleeve with a second prong extending thereout and pointing horizontally in the plane of the second wall whereby when either one of the first and second elements is swung into a horizontal position and the corresponding sleeve is slid toward said member, the aperture of said one element is engaged by a corresponding one of said prongs and said one element is held in horizontal position, said one element extending vertically downward from the corresponding sleeve when its aperture is disengaged from the corresponding prong.

A device as set forth in claim 3, wherein said plate is provided with first and second holes respectively disposed adjacent the corresponding first and second wall, and wherein each of said elements is provided with an opening so positioned that when one of said elements is in its horizontal position, its opening is in registration with the corresponding one of said first and second holes whereby said opening and hole when in registration cart be locked together.
5. A device as set forth in claim 4, wherein each element is an angle bracket having first and second mutually perpendicular plates, the first plate of each bracket being welded at one end to the corresponding one of said sleeves each second plate having a hole through which said shaft extends.
6. A parking lot guarding device comprising (a) a vertical member;
(b) a shaft extending horizontally through said member adjacent the top end thereof with first and second opposite ends of said shaft disposed on opposite sides of the member;
(c) first and second hollow horizontal sleeves, each sleeve being concentrically disposed on said shaft adjacent a corresponding one of the first and second ends and slidable on the shaft toward and away from said member,
(d) first and second elongated elements, each element being secured at one end to a corresponding sleeve and rotatable in a vertical are about said shaft, said element having an aperture spaced apart from said sleeve; and
(e) means secured to said member and having first and second horizontally extending prongs pointing in a direction parallel to said shaft and opposite to each other, each prong being positioned adjacent a corresponding one of the sleeves in a position at which, when the corresponding element is swung to a horizontal position, said each prong can engage the aperture of the corresponding element to hold same in horizontal position.

Claims (1)

1. A PARKING LOT GUARDING DEVICE COMPRISING (A) A VERTICAL MEMBER; (B) A SHAFT EXTENDING HORIZONTALLY THROUGH SAID MEMBER ADJACENT THE TOP END THEREOF; (C) A HOLLOW HORIZONTAL SLEEVE CONCENTRICALLY DISPOSED ON SAID SHAFT ADJACENT ONE END THEREOF AND SLIDABLE THEREON TOWARD AND AWAY FROM SAID MEMBER; (D) AN ELONGATED ELEMENT SECURED AT ONE END TO SAID SLEEVE AND ROTATABLE IN A VERTICAL ARC ABOUT SAID SHAFT, SAID ELEMENT HAVING AN APERTURE SPACED APART FROM SAID SLEEVE; AND (E) MEANS SECURED TO SAID MEMBER AND HAVING A HORIZONTALLY EXTENDING PRONG POINTING IN A DIRECTION PARALLEL TO SAID SHAFT, SAID PRONG BEING SPACED FROM SAID SLEEVE IN A POSITION AT WHICH, WHEN THE ELEMENT IS SWUNG TO A HORIZONTAL POSITION AND SAID SLEEVE IS SLID TOWARDS SAID MEMBER, SAID PRONG ENGAGES SAID APERTURE AND SAID ELEMENT IS HELD IN HORIZONTAL POSITION, SAID ELEMENT EXTENDING VERTICALLY DOWNWARD FROM SAID SLEEVE WHEN SAID PRONG IS DISENGAGED FROM SAID APERTURE.
