My invention relates to gate locks generally and more particularly to a gate lock for collapsible folding gates of the type commonly used'to close off the corridors of banks, otlice buildings and factory buildings and as protection for display windows, warehouses,
garages and various other places.
In thev folding gates in use at present locking means are ordinarily provided in the form of a hasp secured to one gate post which extends through an opening in an adjacent gate post and a padlock is secured through the hasp to lock the doors together. These locks have not been altogether successful due to the fact that persons desiring access to the enclosed premises simply saw the hasp and open the folding gates.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved gate lock positioned within the gate post so that vunauthorized access is relatively diilicult.
It is a further object of my invention to provide an'improved gate lock of this type adapted to cooperate with the channel frame members of one of thegate posts to securely lock the gates together.
A further object of my invention is the provision of an improved gate lock, the locking bolt of which is relatively inaccessible by unauthorized persons. y
Other advantages of my improved gate lock reside inthe specilic arrangement and construction of parts, further exemplified in the following description andl illustrated in the accompanying sheet ofj drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a corridor closed oill by a typical folding gate provided with one of my improved locks;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevational view `of the upright end framemembers with my improved lock attached thereto, the view being taken generally onthe line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionalview through the locking means taken on the line 3-3`of ig. 2- s s s 1 Fig.4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. l and Fig.V 2; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional View on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3 illustrating details of the lock construction.
In the drawing, in Fig. 1, 10 may indicate a corridor or passageway in a building having the foldable gates 12 extending across the passageway to close off the sa-me. The gates 1,2 are preferably of a sheet metal con struction comprisingrthe back upright frame members 14 and the front` upright frame members 16 supported upon the extensible y lazy tongs mechanism 18. Insofar as they have been described, thegates 12 may be of a standard construction such as is familiarly known to those skilled inthe art.
The front upright frame members 16 may each comprise a pair of channel shaped meinbers 2O which have their side flanges directed (inwardly. The members 20 are secured together in spaced relation by suitable rivets 22 which may also serve as pivots for the to one of the uprights 16 by means of rivets .34, which pass throughsuitable openings 36 in theuprightframe members and suitable openings 38 in the lock block. .Each of the half portions v26 and 28 of the lock block are provided with semi-cylindrical bores 42 to register, when the` two parts are placed together to provide a suit-able bore for a lockV body 44 and a lock bolt 46. The lock bolt 46 is provided with a stud 51 to which the collar is rigidly attached by pressing, or it may be formed integral therewith. A key cylinder 46 which is integral with the stud 51 and the lock bolt 46, extends through Vthe lock body 44 in the usual manner. A key slot is provided in the cylinder 46', which isadapted to receive a key which cooperates with the usual ends of the extensible lazy tongs mechanism tumblers of the lock. The construction is such that when the key is located in the slot it will allow the key to turn the cylinder 46, which being integral with the stud 51 and the lock bolt 46, will allow the turning of the T-shaped head 48. On the outer Vend of the lock body 44, a faceplate 45 is provided which is pivot-ed by a rivet 47.
. Means for holding the lock bolt in either a locking or unlocking position are provided and may comprise the collar 50 on the lock bolt which may be provided with a plurality of detent'apertures 52.v A pocket 54 is provided in the half block 26 and a detent linger 56 and compression spring 58 are positioned therein.. 'The detent is so positioned with respect to the location of the T-portion 48 of the lockbolt that it will snap into a detent opening at vertical or horizontal positions ot the head of the lock bolt48, thus providing a useful function when the door is locked or unlocked as an opera-tor will not be required toA experiment with the door to discover whether the bolt is at the correct angle or at aV slightly tilted angle. It will be noted that .the diameter of the lock bolt 46 and the width of the head 48 are slightly larger' than the distance between the opposed `flanges of the members 20. The frame member 16 in which the lock bolt is mounted is accordingly provided with arcuatev grooves 60 through which the bolt 46 may pass and the other upright member 16 is formed with the elongated slots 62 through which the bolt member 48 may pass in its vertical position. yAsmay readily be understood from the drawing, the upright framel members 16 are drawn together as the gate is closed and the lock bolt head, being in a' vertical position, will pass through the slotted opening V62 of Vthe adj acent'upright 16. By the insertion of a key into the lock cylinder 44V the lock bolt 46 and head 48 may be turned approximately ninety degrees, at which point the detent iinger 56 will snap into a detent opening 5 2 and the lock bolt head 48 will be at right angles to the slotted opening v62 and the uprights: 16 of the two portions of the extensible gate will be securely locked together. The bolt head 48 is formed with the bevelled edges 66 so that in the eventot a slight mis-alignment of the uprights 16 the bolt head`48 will be guided v into and through the slots 62. ,A
IVhile I have illustrated and' described my invention as applied lto extensible gates` it will be readily understood bythose skilled in the art that numerous changes and modifications may readily be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited inany particular except as set forth in the claims, rather what I desire to secure andprotect by Letters Patent of the Unit-ed States is; f n
1. A gate lock for a folding gate having a frame upright including a pair of spaced channel shaped members, comprising a split block secured in said trame upright between said members, a lock body secured within said block between said members, and a lock Y bolt adapt-ed to be actuated by a key in said lock body and adapted to be actuated by a key.
3. A gate lock adapted for locking to'- gether a pair of extensible metal gates having upright frame members adapted to abut, each frame member including a pair ofinwardly directed spaced channel shaped'members, comprising a lock block secured in one of said upright frame members and having longitudinal grooves rin which the said flanges of the channel members are received, and a lock bolt in said lock block extending from said frame member and adapted to engage the inner walls of the adjacent upright frame member to lock said gates together.
4. A gate lock adapted for locking together a pair of extensible metal gates hav'- ing upright end frame members, each upright end frame member including a pair oit' spaced channel shapedmembers, comprising a split lock block secured in assembled condition within one of said trame members between said channel shaped members, a lock carried within said block so as to be non-removable theretrom and a T-shaped lock bolt in said lock extending from said frame member and arranged to engage the inner walls of the adjacent upright frame member to lock said gates together.
5. A gate lock adapted tor locking together a pair of extensible gates having abutting vertical frame members, each :trame member including a pair 'of channel shaped bars and means for securing'said bars together in spaced relation and facing each other, comprising a lock carrying member secured between thechannel shaped bars of one frame member radapted to engage the side flanges of said bars to prevent itsA .removal from the assembled upright, a lock body in said carrying member, a lock cylinder carried in said body, and Aa lock bolt securedft'o said lock cylinder and extending to and engaging the inner sides of the side ianges of the adjacent frame member for locking said'gates together in an extended position. n
6. A gate lock adapted for locking together a pair ofextensible gates'having abutting vertical frame members, each frame `member including a pair of channel shaped to said lock cylinder and extending to and engaging the inner sides of the side flanges of the adjacent frame member for locking said gates together in an extended position, and means associated with said lock bolt for yieldingly holding same in either a locked or an unlocked position.
