Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE JOSEPH IIIRN, OF CHILLICOTHE, ASSIGNOR OB ONE-HALF T0 CHARLES H. NEIL, OB COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIEICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 331,639, ated December l, 1885.
Application fi1ed April 25, 1885. Seria1 N0. 163,449. (N0 model.)
T0 all whom zt may concern:
Be it known hai; I, JOSEPH HIRN, a citizen 0f the United Stabes, residing ab Ohillicothe, in the connty 0f Boss and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefu1 Improvement; in Oar-Conplings, 0f which Ehe following is a specification, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings.
My invention re1ates to ear-couplings, the object being 130 provide a pivoted laiach for snpporting the 1ink in a raised position and adapted 130 be struck by the 1ink of the adj2v cent car t0 release the pin and effeet a compfing.
A further objectof the invennion is t0 improwa the details 0f consbrucbion, and 130 pro vide a coupling which sha1l be positive and effeetive in its operat-i0n, and one t hat Will not be likely t0 geb 01113 of order.
W'it-h these ends in view the invention nonsists in the improved construction and combinations 0f parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed ont in Ehe claim.
In the dmwings, Figure 1 is a front elevation ofaear-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section elevation showing the pin supported in a raised position, and Fig. 3 is asection 0f a modification.
In the accompanying drawings, in whieh ]ike 1esters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the dmw-head, which is provided with the usua1 linkopening, a, and pin-openings b, t0 receive the coupling pin B. The rear end 0f the opening, a in the draw-head is provided witsh a seat, (l, in which the end cf bhe coupling- 1ink rests when the ears are coupled.
C- represents an opening forme. in 1bbe upper inner side 0f ohe draw-head just; in rear of the upper opening, b, and having communication with said opening andwibh bhe 1inbopening, as shown ab e.
111 the opening0is located a1atch, Dwhich is substantially segmental in form. 'Ihe head 0f this latch is slightly 1arger than the lower end of the opening G, so that when said 1atch drops 120 support bhe eouplingpin 1'ts end projecs beyond the opening in the lower end of said opening O, anti extends under the pinopening b, 'uhus supporting the pin. When l:he latch D is larger ab its npper end than the opening C a5 its lower end, the said latch is inbrodnced into the opening by providing an opening upon the upper side 0f Lhe drawhead, Which may after the latch is in position in opening O, be closed, 130 prevent the latch from jumping 0ut-.
In the modifieation shown in Fig. 3 the latch is provided with an elongabed slot izhrough which passes a rod, f, thus pivobing said 1atch in Ehe opening C, and allowing a limited veriea] movement.
In the operation 0f my invention the lower end 0f Ehe pin rests uponlthe upper side of the Iower end of the cupling-latch. VVhen the cars come together, thelatch is struck by thelink 0f the adjaeent Zcar, thus throwing it back int0 the opening C und releasing Lhe pin, thus effecting a, coupling.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 seeure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a draw-head having t1he usua1 link andpin openings, and the opening C, smaller ab its lower than ab its upper end und located in theupper inner side 0f thedrawhoad, of alat.ch located in said opening, said la tch being slightly curved and larger'ab its upper than ab its Iower end and located in the opening O, and adapted t0 supporb th e complingpin upon its 10wer end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I c1aim the foregoing as my OW11 I have hereto afi1xed my signabure in presence 0f bwo witnesses.
JOSEPH HIRN.
