(Cl. 224-9) The present invention relates to packboards and more particularly to a combined packboard and folding stool to be used by hunters, hikers, vacationers, picnickers and Y the like.
An object of the present invention is to provide a combined packboard and folding stool which may be made to serve as a seat for resting and which may be unfolded to this position without disturbing or unloading the pack in any manner.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a combined packboard and folding stool which has a pleasing appearance and will neatly store all of the items a person normally takes on a hunting or fishing trip.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a packboard and folding stool combination which can be produced in large or small quantities and sold at a comparatively low price and which can be conveniently utilized whenever and wherever needed.
Still additional objects, benefits and advantages of this invention will become evident from a study of the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a combined packboard and folding stool according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a detailed View of the pivotal connection between the stool and the packboard;
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the device shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a front elevational view of the device in the folded position;
FIG. 5 is a side elevational View of the device in the folded position with a pack sack installed; and
FIG. 6 is a detailed view of the pivotal connection between the front legs and the seat frame.
Referring now to the drawing, the packboard and folding stool comprises three pivotally connected frame members which include a generally Ushaped seat frame 1, a U-shaped main frame or carrier frame 2, and a generally U-shaped leg frame 3. The frame members 1, 2 and 3 may be constructed from tubular metallic material generally used in construction of packboards and the like.
The U-shaped main frame 2 has vertical legs 4 and 5 which are connected adjacent their upper ends by a crossbar 6. The lower end of the frame 2 may be bent at substantially right-angles to the vertical legs so as to form a generally horizontal support or carrier for a pack sack 7 shown in FIG. 5. In addition, the vertical legs 4 and 5 of the frame 2 are provided with brackets 8 to which the seat frame 1 is pivotally connected. FIG. 2 shows the details of this pivotal connection. A second set of brackets 9 are located adjacent the lower ends of the legs 4 and 5 for a purpose to be described.
The U-shaped seat frame 1 has legs 10 and 11 which are pivoted to the brackets 8 by means of the pins 12 spaced from the ends of the legs. As shown most clearly in FIG. 2, holes 13 are provided near the ends of the legs 10 and 11 and a second set of holes 14 are provided in the associated main frame legs which enables the seat frame 1 to be locked in the unfolded position shown in FIG. 1 by means of the pins 15 attached to the main frame. FIG. 2 shows the unfolded position of the seat frame 1 in solid lines and the folded position in the dotted lines. A seat may be formed by a rectangular piece of canvas, leather or the like 16 which may be attached to the frame 1 in any suitable manner.
3,315,856 Patented Apr. 25, 1967 ice The frame 1 is so constructed as to be of a width slightly less than the distance between the legs 4 and 5 of the mainframe 2 so as to allow folding of the frame 1 to the position shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 with the lower end of the seat frame passing between the brackets 9 and being held in place by the pins 17. The pins 17 pass through suitable holes in the brackets 9 and the holes 18 and 19 in the lower end of the seat frame when the seat frame is folded.
The U-shaped leg frame 3 has legs 20 and 21 which are pivotally connected as at 22 to suitable brackets 23 carried on the frame 1 as shown in FIG. 6. The hinged connection between the legs 20 and 21 and the frame 1 may be spring loaded as at 24 in order to hold the frames 1 and 3 at right angles in the unfolded position shown in FIG. 6. FIG. 6 shows the folded position of the frame 3 in dotted line.
When the main frame, seat frame, and leg frame are in the folded position illustrated in FIG. 5, the unit may be carried by means of conventional shoulder straps 25 connected between the brackets or connectors 26 on the cross bar 6 and the brackets 27 on the frame 1. By inserting the pins 17 the entire structure becomes a rigid unit for carrying.
It is understood that the invention is not restricted to the embodiment described hereinbefore and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is susceptible of various modifications as regards its component parts without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A packframe convertible to a stool comprising a substantially rectangular main frame having a lower horizontal extension for supporting a pack, an open seat frame pivoted at one end to the upper portion of the main frame, a leg frame pivoted at one end to the other end portion of the seat frame, a canvas seat mounted across said seat frame, shoulder straps attached to the said upper portion of the main frame and extending over the seat frame and connected to the said other end portion of the seat frame, whereby when the three frames are in an unfolded position an inverted U-shaped stool is provided and when the three frames are folded to be parallel to each other with the leg frame between the seat and main frames, a packframe is provided.
2. A combined packframe and folding stool comprising: an open main frame including pack supporting means on one side thereof, a seat frame pivoted at one end to the other side of the main frame adjacent the upper end thereof, seat means extending across said seat frame, a leg frame pivoted at one end to the other end portion of the seat frame, said leg frame being adapted to nest within said main frame when said frames are folded parallel to each other to form a packframe and means on the upper portion of the main frame and the other end of the seat frame for connecting carrying strap means to said packframe, said frames providing an inverted U-shaped stool in the unfolded position.
3. The combination according to claim 2 including first lock means for locking said seat frame relative to the main frame in the unfolded position, second lock means for locking said leg frame relative to the seat frame in the unfolded position, and third lock means to lock said seat frame relative to the main frame in the folded position.
4. A combined packframe and folding stool comprising: an open main frame including a generally horizontal pack supporting extension on the lower portion of one side thereof, a seat frame pivoted at one end to the other side of the main frame adjacent the upper end thereof, a leg frame pivoted at one end to the other end portion of the seat frame, said leg frame being adapted to nest within said main frame when said frames are folded parallel to each other to form a packframe, said frames providing an inverted U-shaped stool in the unfolded position, first lock means for locking said seat frame relative to the main frame in the unfolded position, second lock means for locking said leg frame relative to the seat frame in the unfolded position, third lock means to lock said seat frame relative to the main frame in the folded position, and first and second bracket means on the upper portion of said main frame and the other end of said seat frame for connecting carrying strap means to said pack frame.

Claims (1)

1. A PACKFRAME CONVERTIBLE TO A STOOL COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY RECTANGULAR MAIN FRAME HAVING A LOWER HORIZONTAL EXTENSION FOR SUPPORTING A PACK, AN OPEN SEAT FRAME PIVOTED AT ONE END TO THE UPPER PORTION OF THE MAIN FRAME, A LEG FRAME PIVOTED AT ONE END TO THE OTHER END PORTION OF THE SEAT FRAME, A CANVAS SEAT MOUNTED ACROSS SAID SEAT FRAME, SHOULDER STRAPS ATTACHED TO THE SAID UPPER PORTION OF THE MAIN FRAME AND EXTENDING OVER THE SEAT FRAME AND CONNECTED TO THE SAID OTHER END PORTION OF THE SEAT FRAME, WHEREBY WHEN THE THREE FRAMES ARE IN AN UNFOLDED POSITION AN INVERTED U-SHAPED STOOL IS PROVIDED AND WHEN THE THREE FRAMES ARE FOLDED TO BE PARALLEL TO EACH OTHE
