Description
AUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE KEARNEY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
IMPRovl-:D WASHING-MACHINE.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,150, dated August 27, 1861.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE KEARNEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clothes- Washing Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional View of my invention adjusted for use and taken in the line 5c on, FiglZ; Fig. 2, a plan or top View of same; Fig. 3, a side View of same in a folded state.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a simple and portable device to aid in the manual operation of washing clothes, the device to be used in connection with an ordinary wash-tub and so arranged that it may loe compactly folded when not required for use and stowed away in a small compass.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a swinging frame provided with a iiuted or corrugated roller and attached to supports which are pivoted to an ordinary wash-board, all being arranged as hereinafter shown and described to effect the desired result.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an ordinary wash-board, such as are used with a wash-tub for rubbing clothes on by hand. To the lower part of the wash-board A there are attached by pivotsaJ a two supports B B, which may be of any suitable height. Between the upper parts of these supports B B a swinging frame C is hung by pivots Z) b. This frame is composed of two side bars c c, connected by cross-bars d d, and D is a tinted roller, the journals e of which are fitted in the lower parts of the side bars d d. The roller D is allowed to turn freely in its bearings, and the frame C should work freely back and forth on the washboard ,and between the supports B B, and the supports B B are allowed to work on the pivots d c, which connect them to the washboard. The supports B B are connected by a cross-bar f.
All the parts above described may be of Wood, the pivots or bolts of course being eX- cepted.
The implement :is used as follows: llt is placed in a wash-tub E, with the wash-board A in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1, and the tub is supplied with a requisite amount of water. The clothes are placed on the board A and subjected to the proper friction and rubbing by the roller D, which is passed back and forth over them by the 0perator. The roller D is allowed to Work in contact with the clothes the whole length of the wash-board in consequence, of the support-s B working on their pivots a a., and, if desired, the wash -board may be slightly curved; but that is not necessary, and will add considerably to the expense of construction.
This device will greatly lessen the labor of washing clothes by hand and Without inj uring the clothes in the least.
The operator maygraduate the pressure as may be required by bearing or pressing down on the frame O, and when the device is not required for use it may be folded, as shown in Fig. 8,the frame C being adjusted between the supports B B and Athe wash-board A turned around in contact with the cross-,bar f of the supports B B. Thus it will be seen that a very simple and efficient device is obtained for the desired purpose.
I do not claim, broadly, 'a fluted roller attached to a swinging frame for Washing clothes, for such devices have been used ona large scale and arranged in various Ways; but I am not aware that a tinted roller placed in a swinging frame has ever been used in connection with a wash-board and attached thereto as herein shown.
I claim, therefore, as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of thewash-board A, supports B B, and swinging frame O, provided with the roller D, arranged as shown, to form a portable and new and useful article for the purpose specified.
LAWRENCE KEARNEY. Witnesses: M. M. LIvING'rsoN,` J. F. BUCKLEY,
