G. B. lSIMONDS.
CYLINDER PISTON PACKING.
No. 331,454. Patented Deo. 1, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS BARTLETT SIMONDS, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LUCIEN B. RHOADS, OF SAME PLACE.
CYLINDER-PISTON PACKING.
SPECIFICATION Vforming part of Letters Patent No. 331,454, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed February 13, 1885. Serial No. 155,819. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:A
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs BAETLETT SIMoNDs, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Cylinder- Piston Packings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an end view, part in section, of my improved packing. Fig. `2 is an edge view, part broken away. Fig.' 3 is a section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 illustrates a modification.
My invention relates to an improved packing, more particularly intended for cylinderpistons; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the piston, and B its rod.
C represents a ring surrounding the body of the piston and divided or cut at D. The ring is held in place by a iiange, I, at one end of the piston, and a removable disk, J, at the other end of the piston, or by other suitable means. The disk is held to the body by bolts or screws L. The body is recessed to receive a block, M, having chambersN to receive pistons O, and another chamber, P, to receive a piston, T. Removable plugs N and P permit the introduction of the pistons. The chamber P is located between the chambers N and communicates therewith by ports U, and extending from it to both sides of the piston-body is a port, V. There are two ports, U, between the chamber P and each chamber N, one of which is exposed, while the other is closed by the piston T. (See Fig. 4.)
W represents pins secured to and extending inward from the ring C, one on each side of the cut D. They extend through slots Yin the block and into the chambersNbehind the pistons O. The block M is held out against the ring by a spring, M', fitting in a cavity, M2, of the body, as shown. The ring may be kept central by a block, Z, placed` diametrically opposite the block M, removable plates S being placed between the blocks and the body of the piston to compensate for Wear, the plates being placed behind whichever block that needs to be set out, to compensate for wear on that part of the ring.
The operation is as follows: When steam enters one end of the cylinder to drive the piston to the other end, a portion of it enters the chamber P through the port V on that side of the piston A, and forces the piston T over and enters through one set of the ports U the chambers N, and forces the pistons O outward against the pins W, thereby expanding the ring C, to insure a tight fit between it and the cylinder. When the steam enters the other end of the cylinder to return the piston A, a
portion of it enters the chamber P from that side of the piston through port V, and, forcing the piston T over, enters the chambers N through the other set of ports, U, acts, as described, on the ring C to expand it, and so the operation goes on.
Instead of the spring M for holding the block M out, it could be done by steam (see Fig. 5) entering achamber, M, through ports M4, where it operates a piston, M5, similar to the piston T, controlling ports M6, leading to the opening or cavity M2, into which a projection, Ml, on the block extends. The block M is provided with outwardly-projecting flanges M10, which embrace the ring C upon opposite sides and overlap its meeting edges, as fully represented in Figs. l and 2. I am thus able to use a single packing-ring with a cut or split to permit of its expansion and contraction, the block acting as a perfect splice, forming a neat and perfect joint, and the pistons above mentioned could in certain cases be dispensed with, the block and ring producing a satisfactory result in themselves. i
I am aware that it is not broadly new to expand a eut ring surrounding a piston-head by means of steam admitted to the interior thereof.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the piston-body, ring surrounding the body, block fitting in arecess in the body and provided with chambers and ports, pistons in said chambers, and pinsl secured to the said ring and extending through slots in the block to be moved by said pistons IOO by steam entering through ports in the body to expand the ring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the piston-body, ring surrounding the body, block fitting in a recess in the body and provided with chambers and ports, piston in said chambers, pins secured to the ring and extending through slotsin the block to be moved by said pistons by steam entering through ports in the body to expand the ring, and spring for holding the block out against the ring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the piston-body, ring surrounding the body, block M, fitting in a recess in the body and provided With chambers P N, ports V U and slots Y, pistons T O in said chambers, and pins W, secured to said ring and extending through the slots Y into the chambers N behind the pistons O, the Whole being arranged and operating substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the piston-body, cut ring surrounding the same, and means for expanding said ring, of the splice-block M and the block Z, occupying diametrically-opposite recesses in the body, and the plate S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
